Gorenstein braid cones and crepant resolutions

To any poset $P$, we associate a convex cone called a braid cone. We also associate a fan and study the toric varieties the cone and fan define. The fan always defines a smooth toric variety $X_P$, while the toric variety $U_P$ of the cone may be singular. We show that $X_{P} \dashrightarrow U_{P}$ is a crepant resolution of singularities if and only if $P$ is bounded. Next, we aim to determine when $U_P$ is Gorenstein or $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein. We prove that whether or not $U_P$ is ($\mathbb{Q}$)-Gorenstein depends only on the biconnected components of the Hasse diagram of $P$. In the case that $P$ has a minimum or maximum element, we show that the Gorenstein property of $U_P$ is completely determined by the Möbius function of $P$. We also provide a recursive method that determines if $U_P$ is ($\mathbb{Q}$)-Gorenstein in this case. We conjecture that $U_P$ is Gorenstein if and only if it is $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein. We verify this conjecture for posets of length $1$ and also for posets with a minimum or maximum element.

Combinatorial Hopf Algebras of Simplicial Complexes

We consider a Hopf algebra of simplicial complexes and provide a cancellation-free formula for its antipode. We then obtain a family of combinatorial Hopf algebras by defining a family of characters on this Hopf algebra. The characters of these combinatorial Hopf algebras give rise to symmetric functions that encode information about colorings of simplicial complexes and their $f$-vectors. We also use characters to give a generalization of Stanley's $(-1)$-color theorem. A $q$-analog version of this family of characters is also studied.

Increasing spanning forests in graphs and simplicial complexes

Let G be a graph with vertex set {1,...,n}. A spanning forest F of G is increasing if the sequence of labels on any path starting at the minimum vertex of a tree of F form an increasing sequence. Hallam and Sagan showed that the generating function ISF(G,t) for increasing spanning forests of G has all nonpositive integral roots. Furthermore they proved that, up to a change of sign, this polynomial equals the chromatic polynomial of G precisely when 1,...,n is a perfect elimination order for G. We give new, purely combinatorial proofs of these results which permit us to generalize them in several ways. For example, we are able to bound the coefficients of ISF(G,t) using broken circuits. We are also able to extend these results to simplicial complexes using the new notion of a cage-free complex. A generalization to labeled multigraphs is also given. We end by exploring spanning forests where the increasing condition is replaced by having the label sequences avoid the patterns 231, 312, and 321.

Factoring the characteristic polynomial of a lattice

We introduce a new method for showing that the roots of the characteristic polynomial of certain finite lattices are all nonnegative integers. This method is based on the notion of a quotient of a poset which will be developed to explain this factorization. Our main theorem will give two simple conditions under which the characteristic polynomial factors with nonnegative integer roots. We will see that Stanley's Supersolvability Theorem is a corollary of this result. Additionally, we will prove a theorem which gives three conditions equivalent to factorization. To our knowledge, all other theorems in this area only give conditions which imply factorization. This theorem will be used to connect the generating function for increasing spanning forests of a graph to its chromatic polynomial. We finish by mentioning some other applications of quotients of posets as well as some open questions.

Applications of Quotient Posets

In this paper we consider the characteristic polynomial of not necessarily ranked posets. We do so by allowing the rank to be an arbitrary function from the poset to the nonnegative integers. We will prove two results showing that the characteristic polynomial of a poset has nonnegative integral roots. Our factorization theorems will then be used to show that any interval of the Tamari lattice has a characteristic polynomial which factors in this way. Blass and Sagan's result about LL lattices will also be shown to be a consequence of our factorization theorems. Finally we will use quotient posets to give unified proofs of some classic Möbius function results.
