Twist and Turn Squeezing in a Multi-Mode Bose-Einstein Condensate

Here we examine the generation of Twist and Turn (TNT) Squeezing in a large atom-number Bose-Einstein Condensate for the purposes of generating quantum-enhanced states for atom interferometry. Unlike previous analysis, we examine situations where the multi-mode dynamics is significant, and cannot be captured by a simple single-mode model. We find that in some regimes, with careful choice of the rotation parameter, we can still obtain squeezing much more rapidly than via one-axis twisting (OAT).

Dynamics and Stability of an Optically Levitated Mirror

We analyse the dynamics of a one-dimensional vertical Fabry-Pérot cavity, where the upper mirror levitates due to intra-cavity radiation pressure force. A perturbative approach is used based around separation of timescales, which allows us to calculate the physical quantities of interest. Due to the dynamics of the cavity field, we find that the upper mirror's motion will always be unstable for levitation performed using only a single laser. Stability can be achieved for two lasers, where one provides the trapping potential and the other a damping effect, and we locate and characterise all parameter regimes where this can occur. Finally we analyse photothermal effects due to heating of the mirror substrate. We show that this can stabilise the system, even with only a single input laser, if it acts to increase the optical path length of the cavity. This work serves as a foundation for understanding how levitated optical cavity schemes can be used as stable metrological platforms.

Semiclassical limits to the linewidth of an atom laser

We investigate the linewidth of a quasi-continuous atom laser within a semiclassical framework. In the high flux regime, the lasing mode can exhibit a number of undesirable features such as density fluctuations. We show that the output therefore has a complicated structure that can be somewhat simplified using Raman outcoupling methods and energy-momentum selection rules. In the weak outcoupling limit, we find that the linewidth of an atom laser is instantaneously Fourier limited, but, due to the energy `chirp' associated with the draining of a condensate, the long-term linewidth of an atom laser is equivalent to the chemical potential of the condensate source. We show that correctly sweeping the outcoupling frequency can recover the Fourier-limited linewidth.
