The interacting pair of galaxies Arp 82: Integral field spectroscopy and numerical simulations

Spectral data cubes of the interacting pair of galaxies NGC 2535 and NGC 2536 (the Arp 82 system) targeting bright emission lines in the visible band, obtained with the imaging Fourier transform spectrometer (iFTS) SITELLE attached to the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), are presented. Analysis of H$\upalpha$ velocity maps reveals a bar in $\rm NGC\,2536$. In $\rm NGC\,2535$, we find strong non-circular motions outside the ocular ring, in the elliptical arc and tidal tails of $\rm NGC\,2535$ and a misalignment between the kinematic and photometric position angles. We detect 155 HII region complexes in the interacting pair of galaxies and determine oxygen abundances for 66 of them using different calibrators. We find, regardless of the indicator used, that the oxygen abundance distribution in $\rm NGC\,2536$ is shallow whereas, in $\rm NGC\,2535$, it is best fitted by two slopes, the break occurring beyond the ocular ring. The inner slope is comparable to the one observed in isolated normal star-forming galaxies but the outer slope is shallow. We present a numerical simulation of the interaction that reproduces the observed tidal features, kinematics, and metallicity distribution, to investigate the effect of the interaction on the galaxies. The model indicates that the galaxies have undergone a close encounter, strongly prograde for the primary, and are half way in their course to a second close encounter.

PopIII-star siblings in IZw18 and WRs in metal-poor galaxies unveiled from integral field spectroscopy

Here we highlight our recent results from the IFS study of Mrk178, the closest metal-poor WR galaxy, and of IZw18, the most metal-poor star-forming galaxy known in the local Universe. The IFS data of Mrk178 show the importance of aperture effects on the search for WR features, and the extent to which physical variations in the ISM properties can be detected. Our IFS data of IZw18 reveal its entire nebular HeII4686-emitting region, and indicate for the first time that peculiar, very hot (nearly) metal-free ionizing stars (called here PopIII-star siblings) might hold the key to the HeII-ionization in IZw18.

The gas metallicity gradient and the star formation activity of disc galaxies

We study oxygen abundance profiles of the gaseous disc components in simulated galaxies in a hierarchical universe. We analyse the disc metallicity gradients in relation to the stellar masses and star formation rates of the simulated galaxies. We find a trend for galaxies with low stellar masses to have steeper metallicity gradients than galaxies with high stellar masses at z ~0. We also detect that the gas-phase metallicity slopes and the specific star formation rate (sSFR) of our simulated disc galaxies are consistent with recently reported observations at z ~0. Simulated galaxies with high stellar masses reproduce the observed relationship at all analysed redshifts and have an increasing contribution of discs with positive metallicity slopes with increasing redshift. Simulated galaxies with low stellar masses a have larger fraction of negative metallicity gradients with increasing redshift. Simulated galaxies with positive or very negative metallicity slopes exhibit disturbed morphologies and/or have a close neighbour. We analyse the evolution of the slope of the oxygen profile and sSFR for a gas-rich galaxy-galaxy encounter, finding that this kind of events could generate either positive and negative gas-phase oxygen profiles depending on their state of evolution. Our results support claims that the determination of reliable metallicity gradients as a function of redshift is a key piece of information to understand galaxy formation and set constrains on the subgrid physics.

The giant HII region NGC 588 as a benchmark for 2D photoionisation models

We use optical integral field spectroscopy and 8 and 24 micron mid-IR observations of the giant HII region NGC 588 in the disc of M33 as input and constraints for two-dimensional tailor-made photoionisation models. Two different geometrical approaches are followed for the modelling structure: i) Each spatial element of the emitting gas is studied individually using models which assume that the ionisation structure is complete in each element to look for azimuthal variations across gas and dust. ii) A single model is considered, and the two-dimensional structure of the gas and the dust are assumed to be due to the projection of an emitting sphere onto the sky. The models in both assumptions reproduce the radial profiles of Hbeta surface brightness, the observed number of ionising photons, and the strong optical emission-line relative intensities. The first approach produces a constant-density matter-bounded thin shell of variable thickness and dust-to-gas ratio, while the second gives place to a radiation-bounded thick shell sphere of decreasing particle density. However, the radial profile of the 8/24 microns IR ratio, depending on the gas and dust geometry, only fits well when the thick-shell model is used. The resulting dust-to-gas mass ratio, which was obtained empirically from the derived dust mass using data from Spitzer, also has a better fit using the thick-shell solution. In both approaches, models support the chemical homogeneity, and the ionisation-parameter radial decrease, These results must be taken with care in view of the very low extinction values that are derived from the IR, as compared to that derived from the Balmer decrement. Besides, the IR can be possibly contaminated with the emission from a cloud of diffuse gas and dust above the plane of the galaxy detected at 250 micron Herschel image.

The Mice at play in the CALIFA survey: A case study of a gas-rich major merger between first passage and coalescence

We present optical integral field spectroscopy (IFS) observations of the Mice, a major merger between two massive (>10^11Msol) gas-rich spirals NGC4676A and B, observed between first passage and final coalescence. The spectra provide stellar and gas kinematics, ionised gas properties and stellar population diagnostics, over the full optical extent of both galaxies. The Mice provide a perfect case study highlighting the importance of IFS data for improving our understanding of local galaxies. The impact of first passage on the kinematics of the stars and gas has been significant, with strong bars likely induced in both galaxies. The barred spiral NGC4676B exhibits a strong twist in both its stellar and ionised gas disk. On the other hand, the impact of the merger on the stellar populations has been minimal thus far: star formation induced by the recent close passage has not contributed significantly to the global star formation rate or stellar mass of the galaxies. Both galaxies show bicones of high ionisation gas extending along their minor axes. In NGC4676A the high gas velocity dispersion and Seyfert-like line ratios at large scaleheight indicate a powerful outflow. Fast shocks extend to ~6.6kpc above the disk plane. The measured ram pressure and mass outflow rate (~8-20Msol/yr) are similar to superwinds from local ULIRGs, although NGC4676A has only a moderate infrared luminosity of 3x10^10Lsol. Energy beyond that provided by the mechanical energy of the starburst appears to be required to drive the outflow. We compare the observations to mock kinematic and stellar population maps from a merger simulation. The models show little enhancement in star formation during and following first passage, in agreement with the observations. We highlight areas where IFS data could help further constrain the models.

Are Wolf-Rayet stars able to pollute the interstellar medium of galaxies? Results from the integral field spectroscopy

We investigate the spatial distribution of chemical abundances in a sample of low metallicity Wolf-Rayet (WR) galaxies selected from the SDSS. We used the integral field spectroscopy technique in the optical spectral range (3700-6850 AA) with PMAS attached to the CAHA 3.5 m telescope. Our statistical analysis of the spatial distributions of O/H and N/O, as derived using the direct method or strong-line parameters consistent with it, indicates that metallicity is homogeneous in five out of the six analysed objects in scales of the order of several kpc. Only in the object WR404, a gradient of metallicity is found in the direction of the low surface brightness tail. In contrast,we found an overabundance of N/O in spatial scales of the order of hundreds of pc associated with or close to the positions of the WR stars in 4 out of the 6 galaxies. We exclude possible hydrodynamical causes, such as the metal-poor gas inflow, for this local pollution by means of the analysis of the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) and mass-nitrogen-to-oxygen relation (MNOR) for the WR galaxies catalogued in the SDSS.

Optical and mid-infrared neon abundance determinations in star-forming regions

We employed observational spectroscopic data of star-forming regions compiled from the literature and photoionization models to analyse the neon ionic abundances obtained using both optical and mid-infrared emission-lines. Comparing Ne++/H+ ionic abundances from distinct methods, we found that, in average, the abundances obtained via IR emission-lines are higher than those obtained via optical lines by a factor of 4. Photoionization models with abundance variations along the radius of the hypothetical nebula provide a possible explanation for a large part of the difference between ionic abundances via optical and infrared emission-lines. Ionization Correction Factor (ICF) for the neon is obtained from direct determinations of ionic fractions using infrared emission-lines. A constant Ne/O ratio (logNe/O \approx -0.70) for a large range of metallicity, independently of the ICF used to compute the neon total abundance is derived.

The ionized gas in the central region of NGC 5253: 2D mapping of the physical and chemical properties

ABRIDGED: NGC5253 was previously studied by our group with the aim to elucidate in detail the starburst interaction processes. Some open issues regarding the 2D structure of the main properties of the ionized gas remain to be addressed. Using IFS data obtained with FLAMES, we derived 2D maps for different tracers of electron density (n_e), electron temperature (T_e) and ionization degree. The maps for n_e as traced by several line ratios are compatible with a 3D stratified view of the nebula with the highest n_e in the innermost layers and a decrease of n_e outwards. To our knowledge, this is the first time that a T_e map based on [SII] lines for an extragalactic object is presented. The joint interpretation of our two T_e maps is consistent with a T_e structure in 3D with higher temperatures close to the main ionizing source surrounded by a colder and more diffuse component. The highest ionization degree is found at the peak of emission for the gas with relatively high ionization in the main GHIIR and lower ionization degree delineating the more extended diffuse component. Abundances for O, Ne and Ar are constant over the mapped area within <0.1 dex. The mean 12+log(O/H) is 8.26 while the relative abundances of log(N/O), log(Ne/O) and log(Ar/O) were \sim-1.32, -0.65 and -2.33, respectively. There are two locations with enhanced N/O. The first (log(N/O)\sim-0.95) is associated to two super star clusters. The second (log(N/O)\sim-1.17), reported here for the first time, is associated to two moderately massive (2-4x10^4 M_sun) and relatively old (\sim10 Myr) clusters. A comparison of the N/O map with those produced by strong line methods supports the use of N2O2 over N2S2 in the search for chemical inhomogeneities within a galaxy. The results on the localized nitrogen enhancement were used to compile and discuss the factors that affect the complex relationship between Wolf-Rayet stars and N/O excess.

A photoionization model of the spatial distribution of the optical and mid-IR properties in NGC595

We present a set of photoionization models that reproduce simultaneously the observed optical and mid-infrared spatial distribution of the HII region NGC595 in the disk of M33 using the code CLOUDY. Both optical (PMAS-Integral Field Spectroscopy) and mid-infrared (8 mi and 24 mi bands from Spitzer) data provide enough spatial resolution to model in a novel approach the inner structure of the HII region. We define a set of elliptical annular regions around the central ionizing cluster with an uniformity in their observed properties and consider each annulus as an independent thin shell structure. For the first time our models fit the relative surface brightness profiles in both the optical (Halpha, [OII], [OIII]) and the mid-infrared emissions (8 mi and 24 mi), under the assumption of a uniform metallicity (12+log(O/H) = 8.45; Esteban et al. 2009) and an age for the stellar cluster of 4.5 Myr (Malumuth et al. 1996). Our models also reproduce the observed uniformity of the R23 parameter and the increase of the [OII]/[OIII] ratio due to the decrease of the ionization parameter. The variation of the Halpha profile is explained in terms of the differences of the occupied volume (the product of filling factor and total volume of the shell) in a matter-bounded geometry, which also allows to reproduce the observed pattern of the extinction. The 8 mi/24 mi ratio is low (ranging between 0.04 and 0.4) because it is dominated by the surviving of small dust grains in the HII region, while the PAHs emit more weakly because they cannot be formed in these thin HII gas shells. The ratio is also well fitted in our models by assuming a dust-to-gas ratio in each annulus compatible with the integrated estimate for the whole HII region after the 70 mi, and 160 mi Spitzer observations.

Planetary nebulae in M33: probes of AGB nucleosynthesis and ISM abundances

We have obtained deep optical spectrophotometry of 16 planetary nebulae in M33, mostly located in the central two kpc of the galaxy, with the Subaru and Keck telescopes. We have derived electron temperatures and chemical abundances from the detection of the [OIII]4363 line for the whole sample. We have found one object with an extreme nitrogen abundance, 12+log(N/H)=9.20, accompanied by a large helium content. After combining our data with those available in the literature for PNe and HII regions, we have examined the behavior of nitrogen, neon, oxygen and argon in relation to each other, and as a function of galactocentric distance. We confirm the good correlation between Ne/H and O/H for PNe in M33. Ar/H is also found to correlate with O/H. This strengthens the idea that at the metallicity of the bright PNe analyzed in M33, which is similar to that found in the LMC, these elements have not been significantly modified during the dredge-up processes that take place during the AGB phase of their progenitor stars. We find no significant oxygen abundance offset between PNe and HII regions at any given galactocentric distance, despite the fact that these objects represent different age groups in the evolution of the galaxy. Combining the results from PNe and HII regions, we obtain a representative slope of the ISM alpha-element (O, Ar, Ne) abundance gradient in M33 of -0.025 +/- 0.006 dex/kpc. Both PNe and HII regions display a large abundance dispersion at any given distance from the galactic center. We find that the N/O ratio in PNe is enhanced, relative to the HII regions, by approximately 0.8 dex.

On the hardening of the ionizing radiation in HII regions across galactic discs through softness parameters

We carry out a study of the hardness of the radiation of ionizing clusters in HII regions. Firstly, we explore the applicability of the softness parameter, originally defined in the optical for pairs of consecutive ionization stages of the same species. With the advent of the infrared space observatories, this definition has been extended to the mid-infrared. We show that the softness parameters, as determined both in the optical and the mid-infrared wavelengths, are sensitive to the effective temperature using a sample of data in both spectral regimes. This is confirmed by comparing the data with a grid of photoionization models, although no complete agreement has been found even for different stellar model atmospheres. Finally, we show that both softness parameters are consistent in the search for radial variations of the hardness of the ionizing radiation of HII regions in the discs of spiral galaxies. We find a range of trends, from galaxies showing pronounced gradients to those showing very flat ones. Although the detectability and slope of these gradients can be altered by the size and luminosity of the studied HII regions, it looks that their existence is related to the mass and type of the galaxies and, hence, to the roperties of the entire disc.
