Khinchin families, set constructions, partitions and exponentials

In this paper, we give a simple criterion to verify that functions of the form $e^g$ are in the Hayman class when $g$ is a power series with nonnegative coefficients. Thus, using the Hayman and Báez-Duarte formulas, we obtain asymptotics for the coefficients of generating functions that arise in many examples of set construction in analytic combinatorics. This new criterion greatly simplifies that obtained previously by the authors.

Asymptotic Stability of Empirical Processes and Related Functionals

Let $E$ be a space of observables in a sequence of trials $ξ_n$ and define $m_n$ to be the empirical distributions of the outcomes. We discuss the almost sure convergence of the sequence $m_n$ in terms of the $ψ$-weak topology of measures, when the sequence $ξ_n$ is assumed to be stationary. In this respect, the limit variable is naturally described as a certain canonical conditional distribution. Then, given some functional $τ$ defined on a space of laws, the consistency of the estimators $τ(m_n)$ is investigated. Hence, a criterion for a refined notion of robustness, that applies when considering random measures, is provided in terms of the modulus of continuity of $τ$.

Zeros of sections of power series: deterministic and random

We present a streamlined proof (and some refinements) of a characterization (due to F. Carlson and G. Bourion, and also to P. Erdös and H. Fried) of the so called Szegö's power series. This characterization is then applied to readily obtain some (more) recent known results and some new results on the asymptotic distribution of zeros of sections of random power series, extricating quite naturally the deterministic ingredients. Finally, we study the possible limits of the zero counting probabilities of a power series.

Visible lattice points in random walks

We consider the possible visits to visible points of a random walker moving up and right in the integer lattice (with probability $α$ and $1-α$, respectively) and starting from the origin. We show that, almost surely, the asymptotic proportion of strings of $k$ consecutive visible lattice points visited by such an $α$-random walk is a certain constant $c_k(α)$, which is actually an (explicitly calculable) polynomial in $α$ of degree $2\lfloor(k-1)/2\rfloor $. For $k=1$, this gives that, almost surely, the asymptotic proportion of time the random walker is visible from the origin is $c_1(α)=6/π^2$, independently of $α$.

A limit theorem for selectors

Any (measurable) function $K$ from $\mathbb{R}^n$ to $\mathbb{R}$ defines an operator $\mathbf{K}$ acting on random variables $X$ by $\mathbf{K}(X)=K(X_1, \ldots, X_n)$, where the $X_j$ are independent copies of $X$. The main result of this paper concerns selectors $H$, continuous functions defined in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and such that $H(x_1, x_2, \ldots, x_n) \in \{x_1,x_2, \ldots, x_n\}$. For each such selector $H$ (except for projections onto a single coordinate) there is a unique point $ω_H$ in the interval $(0,1)$ so that for any random variable $X$ the iterates $\mathbf{H}^{(N)}$ acting on $X$ converge in distribution as $N \to \infty$ to the $ω_H$-quantile of $X$.

Asymptotic normality and greatest common divisors

We report on some statistical regularity properties of greatest common divisors: for large random samples of integers, the number of coprime pairs and the average of the gcd's of those pairs are approximately normal, while the maximum of those gcd's (appropriately normalized) follows approximately a Fréchet distribution approximately. We also consider $r$-tuples instead of pairs, and moments other than the average.
