Skew Laurent Series and General Cyclic Convolutional Codes

Convolutional codes were originally conceived as vector subspaces of a finite-dimensional vector space over a field of Laurent series having a polynomial basis. Piret and Roos modeled cyclic structures on them by adding a module structure over a finite-dimensional algebra skewed by an algebra automorphism. These cyclic convolutional codes turn out to be equivalent to some right ideals of a skew polynomial ring built from the automorphism. When a skew derivation is considered, serious difficulties arise in defining such a skewed module structure on Laurent series. We discuss some solutions to this problem which involve a purely algebraic treatment of the left skew Laurent series built from a left skew derivation of a general coefficient ring, when possible.

Decoding Reed-Solomon Skew-Differential Codes

A large class of MDS linear codes is constructed. These codes are endowed with an efficient decoding algorithm. Both the definition of the codes and the design of their decoding algorithm only require from Linear Algebra methods, making them fully accesible for everyone. Thus, the first part of the paper develops a direct presentation of the codes by means of parity-check matrices, and the decoding algorithm rests upon matrix and linear maps manipulations. The somewhat more sophisticated mathematical context (non-commutative rings) needed for the proof of the correctness of the decoding algorithm is postponed to the second part. A final section locates the Reed-Solomon skew-differential codes introduced here within the general context of codes defined by means of skew polynomial rings.

A Sugiyama-like decoding algorithm for convolutional codes

We propose a decoding algorithm for a class of convolutional codes called skew BCH convolutional codes. These are convolutional codes of designed Hamming distance endowed with a cyclic structure yielding a left ideal of a non-commutative ring (a quotient of a skew polynomial ring). In this setting, right and left division algorithms exist, so our algorithm follows the guidelines of the Sugiyama's procedure for finding the error locator and error evaluator polynomials for BCH block codes.

Hereditary triangular matrix comonads

We recognise Harada's generalized categories of diagrams as a particular case of modules over a monad defined on a finite direct product of additive categories. We work in the dual (albeit formally equivalent) situation, that is, with comodules over comonads. With this conceptual tool at hand, we obtain several of the Harada results with simpler proofs, some of them under more general hypothesis, besides with a characterization of the normal triangular matrix comonads that are hereditary, that is, of homological dimension less or equal than $1$. Our methods rest on a matrix representation of additive functors and natural transformations, which allows us to adapt typical algebraic manipulations from Linear Algebra to the additive categorical setting.

Ideal codes over separable ring extensions

This paper investigates the application of the theoretical algebraic notion of a separable ring extension, in the realm of cyclic convolutional codes or, more generally, ideal codes. We work under very mild conditions, that cover all previously known as well as new non trivial examples. It is proved that ideal codes are direct summands as left ideals of the underlying non-commutative algebra, in analogy with cyclic block codes. This implies, in particular, that they are generated by an idempotent element. Hence, by using a suitable separability element, we design an efficient algorithm for computing one of such idempotents.

Firm Frobenius monads and firm Frobenius algebras

Firm Frobenius algebras are firm algebras and counital coalgebras such that the comultiplication is a bimodule map. They are investigated by categorical methods based on a study of adjunctions and lifted functors. Their categories of comodules and of firm modules are shown to be isomorphic if and only if a canonical comparison functor from the category of comodules to the category of non-unital modules factorizes through the category of firm modules. This happens for example if the underlying algebra possesses local units, e.g. the firm Frobenius algebra arises from a co-Frobenius coalgebra over a base field; or if the comultiplication splits the multiplication (hence the underlying coalgebra is coseparable).

Information-bit error rate and false positives in an MDS code

In this paper, a refinement of the weight distribution in an MDS code is computed. Concretely, the number of codewords with a fixed amount of nonzero bits in both information and redundancy parts is obtained. This refinement improves the theoretical approximation of the information-bit and -symbol error rate, in terms of the channel bit-error rate, in a block transmission through a discrete memoryless channel. Since a bounded distance reproducing encoder is assumed, the computation of the here-called false positive (a decoding failure with no information-symbol error) is provided. As a consequence, a new performance analysis of an MDS code is proposed.

On the category of weak bialgebras

Weak (Hopf) bialgebras are described as (Hopf) bimonoids in appropriate duoidal (also known as 2-monoidal) categories. This interpretation is used to define a category wba of weak bialgebras over a given field. As an application, the "free vector space" functor from the category of small categories with finitely many objects to wba is shown to possess a right adjoint, given by taking (certain) group-like elements. This adjunction is proven to restrict to the full subcategories of groupoids and of weak Hopf algebras, respectively. As a corollary, we obtain equivalences between the category of small categories with finitely many objects and the category of pointed cosemisimple weak bialgebras; and between the category of small groupoids with finitely many objects and the category of pointed cosemisimple weak Hopf algebras.

Re-filtración y propiedades de regularidad de anillos multi-filtrados

Quantum bounded extensions of multifiltered algebras are defined, and they are endowed with a new multifiltration. The behavior of the associated multigraded rings is studied. A refiltering process allows to lift homological properties from the associated multigraded ring to the multifiltered ring. This is the full version, with proofs, of the paper entitled "Regularidad de las álgebras envolventes cuantizadas", by the author, published in "Actas del Encuentro de Matemáticos Andaluces Vol. 2, pp. 493-500, ISBN 8447206394, Sevilla, 2001."

Weak multiplier bialgebras

A non-unital generalization of weak bialgebra is proposed with a multiplier-valued comultiplication. Certain canonical subalgebras of the multiplier algebra (named the `base algebras') are shown to carry coseparable co-Frobenius coalgebra structures. Appropriate modules over a weak multiplier bialgebra are shown to constitute a monoidal category via the (co)module tensor product over the base algebra. The relation to Van Daele and Wang's (regular and arbitrary) weak multiplier Hopf algebra is discussed.

On the double crossed product of weak Hopf algebras

Given a weak distributive law between algebras underlying two weak bialgebras, we present sufficient conditions under which the corresponding weak wreath product algebra becomes a weak bialgebra with respect to the tensor product coalgebra structure. When the weak bialgebras are weak Hopf algebras, then the same conditions are shown to imply that the weak wreath product becomes a weak Hopf algebra, too. Our sufficient conditions are capable to describe most known examples, (in particular the Drinfel'd double of a weak Hopf algebra).

Bilinear factorization of algebras

We study the (so-called bilinear) factorization problem answered by a weak wreath product (of monads and, more specifically, of algebras over a commutative ring) in the works by Street and by Caenepeel and De Groot. A bilinear factorization of a monad R turns out to be given by monad morphisms A --> R <-- B inducing a split epimorphism of B-A bimodules B @ A --> R. We prove a biequivalence between the bicategory of weak distributive laws and an appropriately defined bicategory of bilinear factorization structures. As an illustration of the theory, we collect some examples of algebras over commutative rings which admit a bilinear factorization; i.e. which arise as weak wreath products.
