Quadro-quadric special birational transformations of projective spaces

Special birational transformations $Φ:\p^r\da Z$ defined by quadric hypersurfaces are studied by means of the variety of lines $\mathcal L_z\subset\p^{r-1}$ passing through a general point $z\in Z$. Classification results are obtained when $Z$ is either a Grassmannian of lines, or the 10-dimensional spinor variety, or the $E_6$-variety. In the particular case of quadro-quadric transformations, we extend the well-known classification of Ein and Shepherd-Barron coming from Zak's classification of Severi varieties to a wider class of prime Fano manifolds $Z$. Combining both results, we get a classification of special birational transformations $Φ:\p^r\da Z$ defined by quadric hypersurfaces onto (a linear setion of) a rational homogeneous variety different from a projective space and a quadric hypersurface.

Special birational transformations of projective spaces

Extending some results of Crauder and Katz, and Ein and Shepherd-Barron on special Cremona transformations, we study birational transformations of the complex projective spaces onto prime Fano manifolds such that the base locus X of the transformations is smooth, irreducible and reduced. We get a complete classification when X has dimension 1, or dimension 2, or codimension 2. We also get partial results when X has dimension 3.

A bound on the degree of schemes defined by quadratic equations

We consider complex projective schemes $X\subset\Bbb{P}^{r}$ defined by quadratic equations and satisfying a technical hypothesis on the fibres of the rational map associated to the linear system of quadrics defining $X$. Our assumption is related to the syzygies of the defining equations and, in particular, it is weaker than properties $N_2$, $N_{2,2}$ and $K_2$. In this setting, we show that the degree, $d$, of $X\subset\Bbb{P}^{r}$ is bounded by a function of its codimension, $c$, whose asymptotic behaviour is given by ${2^c}/{\sqrt[4]{πc}}$, thus improving the obvious bound $d\leq 2^c$. More precisely, we get the bound $\binom{d}{2}\leq\binom{2c-1}{c-1}$. Furthermore, if $X$ satisfies property $N_p$ or $N_{2,p}$ we obtain the better bound $\binom{d+2-p}{2}\leq\binom{2c+3-2p}{c+1-p}$. Some classification results are also given when equality holds.
