A note on ensemble holography for rational tori

We study simple examples of ensemble-averaged holography in free compact boson CFTs with rational values of the radius squared. These well-known rational CFTs have an extended chiral algebra generated by three currents. We consider the modular average of the vacuum character in these theories, which results in a weighted average over all modular invariants. In the simplest case, when the chiral algebra is primitive (in a sense we explain), the weights in this ensemble average are all equal. In the non-primitive case the ensemble weights are governed by a semigroup structure on the space of modular invariants. These observations can be viewed as evidence for a holographic duality between the ensemble of CFTs and an exotic gravity theory based on a compact $U(1) \times U(1)$ Chern-Simons action. In the bulk description, the extended chiral algebra arises from soliton sectors, and including these in the path integral on thermal AdS$_3$ leads to the vacuum character of the chiral algebra. We also comment on wormhole-like contributions to the multi-boundary path integral.

Superconformal mechanics of AdS$_2$ D-brane boundstates

We explicitly construct a family of ${\cal N}=4$ superconformal mechanics of dyonic particles, generalizing the work of Anninos et al.\,\cite{Anninos:2013nra} to an arbitrary number of particles. These mechanics are obtained from a scaling limit of the effective Coulomb branch description of ${\mathcal N}=4$ quiver quantum mechanics describing D-branes in type II Calabi-Yau compactifications. In the supergravity description of these D-branes this limit changes the asymptotics to AdS$_2\times $S$^2\times$CY$_3$. We exhibit the $D(1,2;0)$ superconformal symmetry and conserved charges of the mechanics in detail. In addition we present an alternative formulation as a sigma model on a hyperkähler manifold with torsion.

On tensionless string field theory in AdS$_3$

We report on progress in formulating a field theory of tensionless strings in $AdS_3$, starting from the dual large-$N$ symmetric orbifold CFT. We propose a set of field equations which are gauge invariant under the higher spin algebra of the theory, the `Higher Spin Square'. The massless higher spin sector is captured by a Chern-Simons gauge field, while the matter sector is described by unfolded equations similar to those appearing in Vasiliev theory. Our equations incorporate the full perturbative spectrum of the theory, including states coming from the twisted sectors, and capture some of the interactions fixed by gauge invariance. We also discuss the spectrum of the bulk theory and explain how linearization around $AdS_3$ gives rise to the expected set of decoupled wave equations. Our results can be generalized to describe bulk duals of other large-$N$ symmetric orbifolds.

On big crunch solutions in Prokushkin-Vasiliev theory

We construct simple solutions of three-dimensional higher spin gravity interacting with matter in which only the scalar and spin-two fields are excited. They preserve Lorentz symmetry and are similar to the four-dimensional solutions constructed by Sezgin and Sundell, with the difference that the additional twisted sectors of the three-dimensional theory are excited. Furthermore, the three-dimensional system contains an extra parameter $λ$ which allows us to vary the mass of the scalar. Among other reasons, the resulting solutions are interesting for the holographic study of cosmological singularities: they describe the growth of a Coleman-De Luccia bubble in anti-de Sitter space, ending in a big crunch singularity. We initiate the holographic study of these solutions, finding evidence for their interpretation within a multi-trace deformation which renders the dual field theory unstable. The limit $λ\to 0$ is particularly interesting as it captures effects of a running coupling in a large-$N$ interacting fermion model. We also propose a generalization of our solutions, consisting of a dressing with Lorentz-invariant projectors. This additional sector remains non-trivial when the scalar field is turned off.

On matter coupled to the higher spin square

Gaberdiel and Gopakumar recently proposed that the tensionless limit of string theory on $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ takes the form of a higher spin theory with a gauge algebra that is referred to as the higher spin square. In this note, we formulate the linearized Vasiliev-type equations which describe a matter field coupled to the higher spin square. We study the particle spectrum of this field and show that it accounts for the entire untwisted sector of the dual symmetric orbifold CFT, thereby confirming a conjecture by Gaberdiel and Gopakumar. In doing so, we pinpoint the group-theoretic data which determine the spectrum of a matter field coupled to a general higher spin algebra, which we illustrate by revisiting the theory based on the $hs[1/2]$ algebra.

Microstate solutions from black hole deconstruction

We present a new family of asymptotic AdS_3 x S^2 solutions to eleven dimensional supergravity compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold. They originate from the backreaction of S^2-wrapped M2-branes, which play a central role in the deconstruction proposal for the microscopic interpretation of the D4-D0 black hole entropy. We show that they are free of possible pathologies such as closed timelike curves and discuss their holographic interpretation.

Quantization of conical spaces in 3D gravity

We discuss the quantization and holographic aspects of a class of conical spaces in 2+1 dimensional pure AdS gravity. These appear as topological solitons in the Chern-Simons formulation of the theory and are closely related to the recently studied conical solutions in higher spin gravity. We discuss the classical fluctuations around these solutions, which form exceptional coadjoint orbits of the asymptotic Virasoro group. We argue that the quantization of these solutions leads to nonunitary representations of the Virasoro algebra, on account of their having boundary graviton fluctuations which lower the energy. We propose a framework to quantize them in a semiclassical expansion in the inverse central charge, which we use to compute their one-loop corrected energies. Interestingly, the resulting Virasoro representations contain a null vector, thus providing an appearance of Kac's degenerate representations, which are nonunitary at large central charge, in the context of gravity. We match the computed quantum corrections in the bulk with the properties of a class of primaries in Kac's classification.

Unlocking the Axion-Dilaton in 5D Supergravity

We revisit supersymmetric solutions to five dimensional ungauged N=1 supergravity with dynamic hypermultiplets. In particular we focus on a truncation to the axion-dilaton contained in the universal hypermultiplet. The relevant solutions are fibrations over a four-dimensional Kahler base with a holomorphic axion-dilaton. We focus on solutions with additional symmetries and classify Killing vectors which preserve the additional structure imposed by supersymmetry; in particular we extend the existing classification of solutions with a space-like U(1) isometry to the case where the Killing vector is rotational. We elaborate on general geometrical aspects which we illustrate in some simple examples. We especially discuss solutions describing the backreaction of M2-branes, which for example play a role in the black hole deconstruction proposal for microstate geometries.

A note on conical solutions in 3D Vasiliev theory

We construct a class of smooth solutions in three-dimensional Vasiliev higher spin theories based on the gauge algebra hs[λ]. These solutions naturally generalize the previously constructed conical defect solutions in higher spin theories with sl(N) gauge algebra, to which they reduce when λis taken to be equal to N. We provide evidence for their identification with specific primary states of the W_\infty [λ] algebra in a particular classical limit. In terms of the Gaberdiel-Gopakumar-'t Hooft limit of the W_N minimal models, this limit corresponds to a regime where the 't Hooft coupling becomes large.

The semiclassical limit of W_N CFTs and Vasiliev theory

We propose a refinement of the Gaberdiel-Gopakumar duality conjecture between W_N conformal field theories and 2+1-dimensional higher spin gravity. We make an identification of generic representations of the W_N CFT in the semiclassical limit with bulk configurations. By studying the spectrum of the semiclassical limit of the W_N theories and mapping to solutions of Euclidean Vasiliev gravity at λ=-N, we propose that the `light states' of the W_N minimal models in the 't Hooft limit map not to the conical defects of the Vasiliev theory, but rather to bound states of perturbative scalar fields with these defects. Evidence for this identification comes from comparing charges and from holographic relations between CFT null states and bulk symmetries. We also make progress in understanding the coupling of scalar matter to sl(N) gauge fields.

Chronology protection in stationary 3D spacetimes

We address chronology protection in stationary, rotationally symmetric spacetimes in 2+1 dimensional gravity, focusing on the case of negative cosmological constant. We show that, if such spacetimes contain closed timelike curves, they belong to one of the following two classes: (i) bad asymptotics: the boundary itself contains closed timelike curves, or (ii) unphysical stress tensor in the bulk: the matter stress tensor violates the null energy condition. We illustrate these properties in a class of examples involving rotating dust in anti-de Sitter space and comment on the use of the AdS/CFT correspondence to study chronology protection.

Chronology protection in stationary three-dimensional spacetimes

We study chronology protection in stationary, rotationally symmetric spacetimes in 2+1 dimensional gravity, focusing especially on the case of negative cosmological constant. We show that in such spacetimes closed timelike curves must either exist all the way to the boundary or, alternatively, the matter stress tensor must violate the null energy condition in the bulk. We also show that the matter in the closed timelike curve region gives a negative contribution to the conformal weight from the point of view of the dual conformal field theory. We illustrate these properties in a class of examples involving rotating dust in anti-de Sitter space, and comment on the use of the AdS/CFT correspondence to study chronology protection.

Conical Defects in Higher Spin Theories

We study conical defect geometries in the SL(N) Chern-Simons formulation of higher spin gauge theories in AdS_3. We argue that (for N\geq 4) there are special values of the deficit angle for which these geometries are actually smooth configurations of the underlying theory. We also exhibit a gauge in which these geometries can be viewed as wormholes interpolating between two distinct asymptotically AdS_3 spacetimes. Remarkably, the spectrum of smooth SL(N,C) solutions, after an appropriate analytic continuation, exactly matches that of the so-called "light primaries" in the minimal model W_N CFTs at finite N. This gives a candidate bulk interpretation of the latter states in the holographic duality proposed in [1].

Chronology protection and the stringy exclusion principle

We construct a family of supersymmetric solutions to AdS supergravity in three dimensions, that correspond to type IIB seven branes wrapped on an internal S3xT4. These solutions are generalizations of the three dimensional Goedel universe and have closed timelike curves. We propose an enhancon-like mechanism for excising the closed timelike curve region by including the effects of additional light degrees of freedom. These take the form of tensionless 7-brane probes, effectively described through the backreaction of a smeared domain wall. The absence of closed timelike curves in the asymptotic AdS3 geometries obtained in this way is shown to be equivalent to a unitarity bound in the dual CFT, known as the stringy exclusion principle.

Godel space from wrapped M2-branes

We show that M-theory admits a supersymmetric compactification to the Godel universe of the form Godel3 x S2 x CY3. We interpret this geometry as coming from the backreaction of M2-branes wrapping the S2 in an AdS3 x S2 x CY3 flux compactification. In the black hole deconstruction proposal similar states give rise to the entropy of a D4-D0 black hole. The system is effectively described by a three-dimensional theory consisting of an axion-dilaton coupled to gravity with a negative cosmological constant. Other embeddings of the three-dimensional theory imply similar supersymmetric Godel compactifications of type IIA/IIB string theory and F-theory.

Relating chronology protection and unitarity through holography

We give a simple nonsupersymmetric example in which chronology protection follows from unitarity and the AdS/CFT correspondence. We consider a ball of homogeneous, rotating dust in global AdS3 whose backreaction produces a region of Goedel space inside the ball. We solve the Israel matching conditions to find the geometry outside of the dust ball and compute its quantum numbers in the dual CFT. When the radius of the dust ball exceeds a certain critical value, the spacetime will contain closed timelike curves. Our main observation is that precisely when this critical radius is exceeded, a unitarity bound in the dual CFT is violated, leading to a holographic argument for chronology protection.

5D fuzzball geometries and 4D polar states

We analyze the map between a class of `fuzzball' solutions in five dimensions and four-dimensional multicentered solutions under the 4D-5D connection, and interpret the resulting configurations in the framework of Denef and Moore. In five dimensions, we consider Kaluza-Klein monopole supertubes with circular profile which represent microstates of a small black ring. The resulting four-dimensional configurations are, in a suitable duality frame, polar states consisting of stacks of D6 and anti-D6 branes with flux. We argue that these four-dimensional configurations represent zero-entropy constituents of a 2-centered configuration where one of the centers is a small black hole. We also discuss how spectral flow transformations in five dimensions, leading to configurations with momentum, give rise to four-dimensional D6 anti-D6 polar configurations with different flux distributions at the centers.

Supersymmetric D-branes in the D1-D5 background

We construct supersymmetric D-brane probe solutions in the background of the 2-charge D1-D5 system on M, where M is either K3 or T^4. We focus on `near-horizon bound states' that preserve supersymmetries of the near-horizon AdS_3 x S^3 x M geometry and are static with respect to the global time coordinate. We find a variety of half-BPS solutions that span an AdS_2 subspace in AdS_3, carry worldvolume flux and can wrap an S^2 within S^3 and/or supersymmetric cycles in M.

Toy Model for Tachyon Condensation in Bosonic String Field Theory

We study tachyon condensation in a baby version of Witten's open string field theory. For some special values of one of the parameters of the model, we are able to obtain closed form expressions for the stable vacuum state and for the value of the potential at the minimum. We study the convergence rate of the level truncation method and compare our exact results with the numerical results found in the full string field theory.
