On the torsion in symmetric powers on congruence subgroups of Bianchi groups

In this paper we prove that for a fixed neat principal congruence subgroup of a Bianchi group the order of the torsion part of its second cohomology group with coefficients in an integral lattice associated to the m-th symmetric power of the standard representation of SL_2(C) grows exponentially in m^2. We give upper and lower bounds for the growth rate. Our result extends a result of Mueller and Marshall, who proved the corresponding statement for closed arithmetic 3-manifolds, to the finite-volume case. We also prove a limit multiplicity formula for twisted combinatorial Reidemeister torsion on higher dimensional hyperbolic manifolds.

A gluing formula for the analytic torsion on hyperbolic manifolds with cusps

For an odd-dimensional oriented hyperbolic manifold with cusps and strongly acyclic coefficient systems we define the Reidemeister torsion of the Borel-Serre compactification of the manifold using bases of cohomology classes defined via Eisenstein series by the method of Harder. In the main result of this paper we relate this combinatorial torsion to the regularized analytic torsion. Together with results on the asymptotic behaviour of the regularized analytic torsion, established previously, this should have applications to study the growth of torsion in the cohomology of arithmetic groups. Our main result is established via a gluing formula and here our approach is heavily inspired by a recent paper of Lesch.

Analytic torsion and L^2-torsion of compact locally symmetric manifolds

In this paper we study the analytic torsion and the $L^2$-torsion of compact locally symmetric manifolds. We consider the analytic torsion with respect to representations of the fundamental group which are obtained by restriction of irreducible representations of the group of isometries of the underlying symmetric space. The main purpose is to study the asymptotic behavior of the analytic torsion with respect to sequences of representations associated to rays of highest weights.

Exponential growth of homological torsion for towers of congruence subgroups of Bianchi groups

In this paper we prove that for suitable sequences of congruence subgroups of Bianchi groups, including the standard exhaustive sequences of a congruence subgroup, and even symmetric powers of the standard representation of Sl_2(C) the size of the torsion part in the first homology grows exponentially. This extends results of Bergeron and Venkatesh to a case of non-uniform lattices.

The analytic torsion and its asymptotic behaviour for sequences of hyperbolic manifolds of finite volume

In this paper we study the regularized analytic torsion of finite volume hyperbolic manifolds. We consider sequences of coverings $X_i$ of a fixed hyperbolic orbifold $X_0$. Our main result is that for certain sequences of coverings and strongly acyclic flat bundles, the analytic torsion divided by the index of the covering, converges to the $L^2$-torsion. Our results apply to certain sequences of arithmetic groups, in particular to sequences of principal congruence subgroups of $\SO^0(d,1)(\Z)$ and to sequences of principal congruence subgroups or Hecke subgroups of Bianchi groups.

Analytic torsion versus Reidemeister torsion on hyperbolic 3-manifolds with cusps

For a non-compact hyperbolic 3-manifold with cusps we prove an explicit formula that relates the regularized analytic torsion associated to the even symmetric powers of the standard representation of SL_2(C) to the corresponding Reidemeister torsion. Our proof rests on an expression of the analytic torsion in terms of special values of Ruelle zeta functions as well as on recent work of Pere Menal-Ferrer and Joan Porti.

Selberg zeta functions on odd-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds of finite volume

We study Selberg zeta functions $Z(s,σ)$ associated to locally homogeneous vector bundles over the unit-sphere bundle of a complete odd-dimensional hyperbolic manifold of finite volume. We assume a certain condition on the fundamental group of the manifold. A priori, the Selberg zeta functions are defined only for s in some right half-space of $\mathbb{C}$. We will prove that for any locally homogeneous bundle the functions $Z(s,σ)$ have a meromorphic continuation to $\mathbb{C}$ and we will give a complete description of their singularities in terms of spectral data of the underlying manifold. Our work generalizes results of Bunke and Olbrich to the non-compact situation. As an application of our results one can compare the normalized Reidemeister torsions on hyperbolic 3 manifolds with cusps which were introduced by Menal-Ferrer and Porti to the corresponding regularized analytic torsions.

Analytic torsion of complete hyperbolic manifolds of finite volume

In this paper we define the analytic torsion for a complete oriented hyperbolic manifold of finite volume. It depends on a representation of the fundamental group. For manifolds of odd dimension, we study the asymptotic behavior of the analytic torsion with respect to certain sequences of representations obtained by restriction of irreducible representations of the group of isometries of the hyperbolic space to the fundamental group.
