5 loops in 24/5 dimensions

A first quantised approach to loop amplitudes based on the pure spinor particle is applied to the systematics of four-particle amplitudes in maximally supersymmetric field theories. Counting of fermionic zero modes allows the identification of momentum factors multiplying R**4 in the case of supergravity (and F**4 in the Yang--Mills case) thereby making manifest their ultraviolet properties as a function of dimension, D. For L=2,3,4 loops the leading supergravity divergence is in D=4+6/L dimensions and proportional to d*2L R**4, in line with earlier field theory calculations. However, at five loops there is a radical change in the systematics, suggesting the presence of a contribution with an explicit L=5 logarithmic ultraviolet divergence when D=24/5 that is proportional to d*8 R**4. We further argue that d*8 R**4 should receive contributions from all loops, which would imply that N=8 supergravity (with D=4) is not protected by supersymmetry from a seven-loop divergence.

Gauged non-compact WZNW models, revisited

The purpose of the present paper is to investigate the necessary conditions for unitarity of the spectrum of non-compact gauged WZNW models to some depth. In particular, we would like to investigate the necessity of integer weights and level. We will learn that the problem is very complex and we have not found any simple and general way to formulate the necessary conditions. Instead one must resort to studying the problem almost case by case. The only nearly complete conditions that we will find, is for the case g = su(n,1). Furthermore, the horizontal part of the case g = su(p,q) is nearly completed as well. In other cases, we will find conditions associated with certain subalgebras and nodes in the Dynkin diagram close to the one corresponding to the non-compact root. In these examples we can give conditions for the horizontal part of the algebra. As a by-product of our investigation we will prove some nice formulae of character identities and explicit branching functions for these representations.

Modular invariant partition functions for non-compact G/Ad(H) models

We propose a spectrum for a class of gauged non-compact G/Ad(H) WZNW models, including spectrally flowed images of highest, lowest, and mixed extremal weight modules. These are combined into blocks whose characters, due to the Lorentzian signature of the target space, are divergent and treated as formal expressions in need of regularisation. Assuming that this is possible, we show that these extended characters transform linearly under modular transformations, and can be used to write down modular invariant partition functions.

Multi-loop amplitudes in maximally supersymmetric pure spinor field theory

This paper provides a more detailed background to the results of arXiv:1004.2692 concerning properties of multi-loop amplitudes in a pure spinor formulation of field theories with maximal supersymmetry. This involves the development of a first quantised field theory version of the non-minimal pure spinor formalism originally designed for describing superstring amplitudes. In addition to superspace world-line fields, the formalism involves a set of world-line ghost fields that are required for implementing BRST invariance with a composite b ghost. In particular, we show that BRST invariance requires the presence of certain contact terms. For four-point amplitudes, these are important beyond two loops. We also present an alternative proof of the "no-triangle hypothesis" and the vanishing of amplitudes with fewer than four external particles.

WZNW Strings, Unitarity and Anti de Sitter spaces

We investigate the unitarity of strings on non-trivial space-time backgrounds based on gauged WZNW models involving SO(n,2), gauging an SO(n,1) subgroup. As geometric coset spaces, these are Anti de Sitter spaces. Our present models are more complicated than the ones considered previously, for example those connected to Hermitian symmetric spaces. In the present case, the time-like field component is not a center of the maximal compact subalgebra, leading to several additional complications. Assuming discrete representations, it will only be possible to consider n even, resulting in odd dimensional spaces. We will prove that such models are free of ghosts for a class of discrete representations.
