Lower bounds on the maximal number of rational points on curves over finite fields

For a given genus $g \geq 1$, we give lower bounds for the maximal number of rational points on a smooth projective absolutely irreducible curve of genus $g$ over ${\mathbb F}_q$. As a consequence of Katz-Sarnak theory, we first get for any given $g>0$, any $\varepsilon>0$ and all $q$ large enough, the existence of a curve of genus $g$ over ${\mathbb F}_q$ with at least $1+q+ (2g-\varepsilon) \sqrt{q}$ rational points. Then using sums of powers of traces of Frobenius of hyperelliptic curves, we get a lower bound of the form $1+q+1.71 \sqrt{q}$ valid for $g \geq 3$ and odd $q \geq 11$. Finally, explicit constructions of towers of curves improve this result, with a bound of the form $1+q+4 \sqrt{q} -32$ valid for all $g\ge 2$ and for all $q$.

$\mathrm{GL}_2\times\mathrm{GSp}_2$ $L$-values and Hecke eigenvalue congruences

We find experimental examples of congruences of Hecke eigenvalues between automorphic representations of groups such as $\mathrm{GSp}_2(\mathbb{A})$, $\mathrm{SO}(4,3)(\mathbb{\mathbb{A}})$ and $\mathrm{SO}(5,4)(\mathbb{A})$, where the prime modulus should, for various reasons, appear in the algebraic part of a critical "tensor-product" $L$-value associated to cuspidal automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{A})$ and $\mathrm{GSp}_2(\mathbb{A})$. Using special techniques for evaluating $L$-functions with few known coefficients, we compute sufficiently good approximations to detect the anticipated prime divisors.

Eisenstein congruences for SO(4,3), SO(4,4), spinor and triple product L-values

We work out instances of a general conjecture on congruences between Hecke eigenvalues of induced and cuspidal automorphic representations of a reductive group, modulo divisors of certain critical L-values, in the case that the group is a split orthogonal group. We provide some numerical evidence in the case that the group is SO(4,3) and the L-function is the spinor L-function of a genus 2, vector-valued, Siegel cusp form. We also consider the case that the group is SO(4,4) and the L-function is a triple product L-function.

On the cohomology of moduli spaces of (weighted) stable rational curves

We give a recursive algorithm for computing the character of the cohomology of the moduli space $\Mmb_{0,n}$ of stable $n$-pointed genus zero curves as a representation of the symmetric group $\Sg_n$ on $n$ letters. Using the algorithm we can show a formula for the maximum length of this character. Our main tool is connected to the moduli spaces of weighted stable curves introduced by Hassett.

Siegel modular forms of degree three and the cohomology of local systems

We give an explicit conjectural formula for the motivic Euler characteristic of an arbitrary symplectic local system on the moduli space A_3 of principally polarized abelian threefolds. The main term of the formula is a conjectural motive of Siegel modular forms of a certain type; the remaining terms admit a surprisingly simple description in terms of the motivic Euler characteristics for lower genera. The conjecture is based on extensive counts of curves of genus three and abelian threefolds over finite fields. It provides a lot of new information about vector-valued Siegel modular forms of degree three, such as dimension formulas and traces of Hecke operators. We also use it to predict several lifts from genus 1 to genus 3, as well as lifts from G_2 and new congruences of Harder type.

Equivariant counts of points of the moduli spaces of pointed hyperelliptic curves

We consider the moduli space $\Hh_{g,n}$ of $n$-pointed smooth hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$. In order to get cohomological information we wish to make $\s_n$-equivariant counts of the numbers of points defined over finite fields of this moduli space. We find recurrence relations in the genus that these numbers fulfill. Thus, if we can make $\s_n$-equivariant counts of $\Hh_{g,n}$ for low genus, then we can do this for every genus. Information about curves of genus 0 and 1 is then found to be sufficient to compute the answers for $\Hh_{g,n}$ for all $g$ and for $n \leq 7$. These results are applied to the moduli spaces of stable curves of genus 2 with up to 7 points, and this gives us the $\s_n$-equivariant Galois (resp. Hodge) structure of their $\ell$-adic (resp. Betti) cohomology.
