Global Classical Solutions Near Vacuum to the Initial-Boundary Value Problem of Isentropic Supersonic Flows through Divergent Ducts

In this paper, we study the global existence and asymptotic behavior of classical solutions near vacuum for the initial-boundary value problem modeling isentropic supersonic flows through divergent ducts. The governing equations are the compressible Euler equations with a small parameter, which can be written as a hyperbolic system in terms of the Riemann invariants with a non-dissipative source. We provide a new result for the global existence of classical solutions to initial-boundary value problems of non-dissipative hyperbolic balance laws without the assumption of small data. The work is based on the local existence, the maximum principle and the uniform a priori estimates obtained by the generalized Lax transformations. The asymptotic behavior of classical solutions is also shown by studying the behavior of Riemann invariants along each characteristic curve and vertical line. The results can be applied to the spherically symmetric solutions to N-dimensional compressible Euler equations. Numerical simulations are provided to support our theoretical results.

Global Transonic Solutions to Combined Fanno Rayleigh Flows Through Variable Nozzles

In this paper, we study the initial-boundary value problem of compressible Euler equations with friction and heating that model the combined Fanno-Rayleigh flows through symmetric variable area nozzles, in particular, the case of contracting nozzles is considered. A new version of a generalized Glimm scheme (GGS) is presented for establishing the global existence of transonic entropy solutions. Modified Riemann and boundary Riemann solutions are applied to design this GGS which obtained by the contraction matrices acting on the homogeneous Riemann (or boundary-Riemann) solutions. The extended Glimm-Goodman wave interaction estimates are investigated for ensuring the stability of the scheme and the positivity of gas velocity that leads to the existence of the weak solution. The limit of approximation solutions serves as an entropy solution. Moreover, a quantitative relation between the shape of the nozzle, the friction, and the heat is proposed. Under this relation, the global existence of weak solution for contracting nozzle is achieved. Simulations of contraction-expansion and expansion-contraction nozzles are presented to illustrate the relevant theoretical results.

Global Transonic Solutions of Planetary Atmospheres in Hydrodynamic Region $\mbox{--}$ Hydrodynamic Escape Problem due to Gravity and Heat

The hydrodynamic escape problem (HEP), which is characterized by a free boundary value problem of Euler equation with gravity and heat, is crucial for investigating the evolution of planetary atmospheres. In this paper, the global existence of transonic solutions to the HEP is established using the generalized Glimm method. The new version of Riemann and boundary-Riemann solvers, are provided as building blocks of the generalized Glimm method by inventing the contraction matrices for the homogeneous Riemann (or boundary-Riemann) solutions. The extended Glimm-Goodman wave interaction estimates are investigated for obtaining a stable scheme and positive gas velocity, which matches the physical observation. The limit of approximation solutions serves as an entropy solution of bounded variations. Moreover, the range of the hydrodynamical region is also obtained.

Well-posedness of the two-dimensional generalized Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation on the upper half plane

This paper focuses on the two-dimensional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony and Benjamin-Bona-Mahony-Burgers equations with a general flux function. The aim is at the global (in time) well-posedness of the initial-and boundary-value problem for these equations defined in the upper half-plane. Under suitable growth conditions on the flux function, we are able to establish the global well-posedness in a Sobolev class. When the initial- and boundary-data become more regular, the corresponding solutions are shown to be classical. In addition, the continuous dependence on the data is also obtained.
