Substrate-Controlled Magnetism: Fe nanowires on vicinal Cu surfaces

Here we present a novel approach to control magnetic interactions in atomic-scale nanowires. Our ab initio calculations demonstrate the possibility to tune magnetic properties of Fe nanowires formed on vicinal Cu surfaces. Both intrawire and interwire magnetic exchange parameters are extracted from DFT calculations. This study suggests that the effective interwire magnetic exchange parameters exhibit Ruderman--Kittel--Kasuya--Yosida-like (RKKY) oscillations as a function of Fe interwire separation. The choice of vicinal Cu surface offers possibilities for controlling the magnetic coupling. Furthermore, an anisotropic Heisenberg model was used in Monte Carlo simulations to examine the stability of these magnetic configurations at finite temperature. The predicted critical temperatures of the Fe nanowires on Cu(422) and Cu(533) surfaces are well-above room temperature.

Exact Hamming Distortion Analysis of Viterbi Encoded Trellis Coded Quantizers

Let G be a finite strongly connected aperiodic directed graph in which each edge carries a label from a finite alphabet A. Then G induces a trellis coded quantizer for encoding an alphabet A memoryless source. A source sequence of long finite length is encoded by finding a path in G of that length whose sequence of labels is closest in Hamming distance to the source sequence; finding the minimum distance path is a dynamic programming problem that is solved using the Viterbi algorithm. We show how a Markov chain can be used to obtain a closed form expression for the asymptotic expected Hamming distortion per sample that results as the number of encoded source samples increases without bound.

Transformation Pathways of Silica under High Pressure

Concurrent molecular dynamics simulations and ab initio calculations show that densification of silica under pressure follows a ubiquitous two-stage mechanism. First, anions form a close-packed sub-lattice, governed by the strong repulsion between them. Next, cations redistribute onto the interstices. In cristobalite silica, the first stage is manifest by the formation of a metastable phase, which was observed experimentally a decade ago, but never indexed due to ambiguous diffraction patterns. Our simulations conclusively reveal its structure and its role in the densification of silica.
