Physical Interpretation of the Angle Dependent Magnetic Helicity Spectrum in the Solar Wind: The Nature of Turbulent Fluctuations near the Proton Gyroradius Scale

Motivated by recent observations of distinct parallel and perpendicular signatures in magnetic helicity measurements segregated by wave period and angle between the local magnetic field and the solar wind velocity, this paper undertakes a comparison of three intervals of \emph{Ulysses} data with synthetic time series generated from a physically motivated turbulence model. From these comparisons, it is hypothesized that the observed signatures result from a perpendicular cascade of \Alfvenic fluctuations and a local, non-turbulent population of ion cyclotron or whistler waves generated by temperature anisotropy instabilities. By constraining the model's free parameters through comparison to \emph{in situ} data, it is found that, on average, $ \sim 95\%$ of the power near dissipative scales is contained in a perpendicular \Alfvenic cascade and that the parallel fluctuations are propagating nearly unidirectionally. The effects of aliasing on magnetic helicity measurements are considered and shown to be significant near the Nyquist frequency.

Integral equation for electrostatic waves radiated by a point source in a spatially homogeneous magnetized plasma

Solutions of the linearized Vlasov-Poisson equations for the electric field radiated by a time varying point charge in a three-dimensional, unbounded, spatially homogeneous plasma with a uniform background magnetic field and a uniform (static) flow velocity are expressed in terms of an equivalent integral equation in the time domain. For plasmas characterized by Maxwell distribution functions with isotropic temperatures, the kernel has a relatively simple mathematical form consisting only of elementary functions, exponential and trigonometric functions (sines and cosines), and no infinite sums of Bessel functions. Consequently, the integral equation is amenable to numerical solutions and may be useful for the study of the impulse response of magnetized plasmas and, more generally, the response to arbitrary waveforms.

Spectral scaling laws in MHD turbulence simulations and in the solar wind

The question is addressed to what extent incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) can describe random magnetic and velocity fluctuations measured in the solar wind. It is demonstrated that distributions of spectral indices for the velocity, magnetic field, and total energy obtained from high resolution numerical simulations are qualitatively and quantitatively similar to solar wind observations at 1 AU. Both simulations and observations show that in the inertial range the magnetic field spectrum E_b is steeper than the velocity spectrum E_v with E_b >~ E_v and that the residual energy E_R = E_b-E_v decreases nearly following a k_perp^-2 scaling.
