M5-Brane Amplitudes

The dynamics of a probe M5-brane, embedded as a hypersurface in eleven-dimensional Minkowski spacetime, is described by a six-dimensional world-volume theory. This theory has a variety of interesting symmetries some of which are obscure in the Lagrangian formulation of the theory. However, as summarized in this review, an alternative approach is to construct all of its on-shell tree-level scattering amplitudes. This enables understanding all of the symmetries in a satisfying way. This work is dedicated to the memory of Peter Freund.

New Formulation of the Type IIB Superstring Action in $AdS_5 \times S^5$

Previous studies of the type IIB superstring in an ${AdS_5 \times S^5}$ background are based on a description of the superspace geometry as the quotient space $PSU(2,2|4)/SO(4,1) \times SO(5)$. This paper develops an alternative approach in which the Grassmann coordinates provide a nonlinear realization of $PSU(2,2|4)$ based on the quotient space $PSU(2,2|4)/SU(2,2) \times SU(4)$, and the bosonic coordinates are described as a submanifold of $SU(2,2) \times SU(4)$. This formulation keeps all bosonic symmetries manifest, and it provides the complete dependence on the Grassmann coordinates in terms of simple analytic expressions. It is used to construct the superstring world-sheet action in a form in which the $PSU(2,2|4)$ symmetry is manifest and kappa symmetry can be established. This formulation might have some advantages compared to previous ones, but this remains to be demonstrated.

BPS Soliton Solutions of a D3-brane Action

The world-volume action of a probe D3-brane in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ with $N$ units of flux has the field content, symmetries, and dualities of the $U(1)$ factor of ${\cal N} = 4$ $U(N+1)$ super Yang--Mills theory, spontaneously broken to $U(N) \times U(1)$ by being on the Coulomb branch, with the massive fields integrated out. Thus, it might be the exact effective action (a highly effective action), or else a useful approximation to it. We construct an $SL(2,Z)$ multiplet of BPS soliton solutions of the D3-brane action and show that in the $N=1$ case they correspond to the electrically charged states that have been integrated out as well as magnetic monopoles and dyons. Their charges are uniformly spread on a spherical surface, a soliton bubble, which can be interpreted as a phase boundary. This picture is consistent with previous results in the string theory and field theory literature.

Gauge Theories on the Coulomb branch

We construct the world-volume action of a probe D3-brane in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ with $N$ units of flux. It has the field content, symmetries, and dualities of the $U(1)$ factor of ${\cal N} =4$ $U(N+1)$ super Yang--Mills theory, spontaneously broken to $U(N) \times U(1)$ by being on the Coulomb branch, with the massive fields integrated out. This motivates the conjecture that it is the exact effective action, called a `highly effective action' (HEA). We construct an $SL(2,Z)$ multiplet of BPS soliton solutions of the D3-brane theory (the conjectured HEA) and show that it reproduces the electrically charged massive states that have been integrated out as well as magnetic monopoles and dyons. Their charges are uniformly spread on a spherical surface, called a `soliton bubble', which is interpreted as a phase boundary.

Yangian-Like Symmetry of Probe-Brane Actions

We demonstrate that world-volume actions describing probe branes in anti de Sitter space have an infinite-dimensional symmetry algebra that is reminiscent of Yangian symmetry. Two essential ingredients are responsible for this symmetry. The first is an inversion symmetry of anti de Sitter space. The second is the compensating gauge transformations that are required to properly describe global symmetries after gauge fixing the general coordinate invariance.

Higgs Bosons at 98 and 125 GeV at LEP and the LHC

We discuss NMSSM scenarios in which the lightest Higgs boson $h_1$ is consistent with the small LEP excess at about 98 GeV in $e^+e^- \to Zh$ with $h\to b\anti b$ and the heavier Higgs boson $h_2$ has the primary features of the LHC Higgs-like signals at 125 GeV, including an enhanced $γγ$ rate. Verification or falsification of the 98 GeV $h_1$ may be possible at the LHC during the 14 TeV run. The detection of the other NMSSM Higgs bosons at the LHC and future colliders is also discussed, as well as dark matter properties of the scenario under consideration.

Highly Effective Actions

It is conjectured that the world-volume action of a probe D3-brane in an $AdS_5 \times S^5$ background of type IIB superstring theory, with one unit of flux, can be reinterpreted as the exact effective action (or highly effective action) for U(2), ${\cal N} = 4$ super Yang-Mills theory on the Coulomb branch. An analogous conjecture for $U(2)_k \times U(2)_{-k} $ ABJM theory is also presented. The main evidence supporting these conjectures is that the brane actions have all of the expected symmetries and dualities. Highly effective actions have general coordinate invariance, even though they describe nongravitational theories.

Multicharge Superstrings

There are an infinite number of type IIB superstrings in ten dimensions, called (p,q) strings, that are labeled by two distinct string charges. They can form string junctions and string networks. These are the key to understanding the Coulomb branch BPS spectrum of N=4 super Yang--Mills theories in four dimensions. Nongravitational theories that are analogous to type IIB superstring theory in some respects are the ADE (2,0) six-dimensional theories on the Coulomb branch. Each of them contains a finite number of half-BPS superstrings, which can be labeled by the root vectors of the Lie algebra. When the rank is greater than one, these strings can also form string junctions and string networks. The relationship between N=4 super Yang--Mills theories in four dimensions and the (2,0) theories in six dimensions can be explored by utilizing the duality between type IIB superstring theory compactified on a circle and M-theory compactified on a torus.

The Early History of String Theory and Supersymmetry

This lecture presents a brief overview of the early history of string theory and supersymmetry. It describes how the S-matrix theory program for understanding the strong nuclear force evolved into superstring theory, which is a promising framework for constructing a unified quantum theory of all forces including gravity. The period covered begins with S-matrix theory in the mid 1960s and ends with the widespread acceptance of superstring theory in the mid 1980s. Further details and additional references can be found in Schwarz (2007).

Quantizing String Theory in AdS_5 X S^5: Beyond the pp-Wave

In a certain kinematic limit, where the effects of spacetime curvature (and other background fields) greatly simplify, the light-cone gauge world-sheet action for a type IIB superstring on AdS_5 x S^5 reduces to that of a free field theory. It has been conjectured by Berenstein, Maldacena, and Nastase that the energy spectrum of this string theory matches the dimensions of operators in the appropriately defined large R-charge large-N_c sector of N=4 supersymmetric Yang--Mills theory in four dimensions. This holographic equivalence is thought to be exact, independent of any simplifying kinematic limits. As a step toward verifying this larger conjecture, we have computed the complete set of first curvature corrections to the spectrum of light-cone gauge string theory that arises in the expansion of AdS_5 x S^5 about the plane-wave limit. The resulting spectrum has the complete dependence on lambda = g_YM^2 N_c; corresponding results in the gauge theory are known only to second order in lambda. We find precise agreement to this order, including the N=4 extended supermultiplet structure. In the process, we demonstrate that the complicated schemes put forward in recent years for defining the Green--Schwarz superstring action in background Ramond-Ramond fields can be reduced to a practical (and correct) method for quantizing the string.

Remarks on Non-BPS D-Branes

Following Sen's discovery of various stable non-BPS D-branes, K-theory has been shown to be the appropriate mathematical framework for classifying conserved D-brane charges. The classification accounts for known D-branes and predicts some new ones including a D8-brane in type I superstring theory. After briefly reviewing these developments, we discuss certain issues pertaining to the D8-brane, which is unstable.

An SL(2,Z) Multiplet of Type IIB Superstrings

An SL(2, Z) family of string solutions of type IIB supergravity in ten dimensions is constructed. The solutions are labeled by a pair of relatively prime integers, which characterize charges of the three-form field strengths. The string tensions depend on these charges in an SL(2, Z) covariant way. Compactifying on a circle and identifying with eleven-dimensional supergravity compactified on a torus implies that the modulus of the IIB theory should be equated to the modular parameter of the torus.

Gauge-Invariant and Gauge-Fixed D-Brane Actions

The first part of this paper presents actions for Dirichlet p-branes embedded in a flat 10-dimensional space-time. The fields of the (p+1)-dimensional world-volume theories are the 10d space-time coordinates $ X^m$, a pair of Majorana-Weyl spinors $θ_1$ and $θ_2$, and a U(1) gauge field $A_μ$. The N = 2A or 2B super-Poincare group in ten dimensions is realized as a global symmetry. In addition, the theories have local symmetries consisting of general coordinate invariance of the world volume, a local fermionic symmetry (called ``kappa''), and U(1) gauge invariance. A detailed proof of the kappa symmetry is given that applies to all cases (p = 0,1, . . ., 9). The second part of the paper presents gauge-fixed versions of these theories. The fields of the 10d (p = 9) gauge-fixed theory are a single Majorana-Weyl spinor $λ$ and the U(1) gauge field $A_μ$. This theory, whose action turns out to be surprisingly simple, is a supersymmetric extension of 10d Born-Infeld theory. It has two global supersymmetries: one represents an unbroken symmetry, and the second corresponds to a broken symmetry for which $λ$ is the Goldstone fermion. The gauge-fixed supersymmetric D-brane theories with $p<9$ can be obtained from the 10d one by dimensional reduction.

Anomalies, Dualities, and Topology of D=6 N=1 Superstring Vacua

We consider various aspects of compactifications of the Type I/heterotic $Spin(32)/\Z_2$ theory on K3. One family of such compactifications includes the standard embedding of the spin connection in the gauge group, and is on the same moduli space as the compactification of the heterotic $E_8\times E_8$ theory on K3 with instanton numbers (8,16). Another class, which includes an orbifold of the Type I theory recently constructed by Gimon and Polchinski and whose field theory limit involves some topological novelties, is on the moduli space of the heterotic $E_8\times E_8$ theory on K3 with instanton numbers (12,12). These connections between $Spin(32)/\Z_2$ and $E_8\times E_8$ models can be demonstrated by T duality, and permit a better understanding of non-perturbative gauge fields in the (12,12) model. In the transformation between $Spin(32)/\Z_2$ and $E_8\times E_8$ models, the strong/weak coupling duality of the (12,12) $E_8\times E_8$ model is mapped to T duality in the Type I theory. The gauge and gravitational anomalies in the Type I theory are canceled by an extension of the Green-Schwarz mechanism.

Lectures on Superstring and M Theory Dualities

These lectures begin by reviewing the evidence for S duality of the toroidally compactified heterotic string in 4d that was obtained in the period 1992--94. Next they review recently discovered dualities that relate all five of the 10d superstring theories and a quantum extension of 11d supergravity called M theory. The study of p-branes of various dimensions (some of which are D-branes) plays a central role. The final sections survey supersymmetric string vacua in 6d and some of the dual constructions by which they can be obtained. Special emphasis is given to a class of N=1 models that exhibit ``heterotic-heterotic duality.''

Noncompact Symmetries in String Theory

Noncompact groups, similar to those that appeared in various supergravity theories in the 1970's, have been turning up in recent studies of string theory. First it was discovered that moduli spaces of toroidal compactification are given by noncompact groups modded out by their maximal compact subgroups and discrete duality groups. Then it was found that many other moduli spaces have analogous descriptions. More recently, noncompact group symmetries have turned up in effective actions used to study string cosmology and other classical configurations. This paper explores these noncompact groups in the case of toroidal compactification both from the viewpoint of low-energy effective field theory, using the method of dimensional reduction, and from the viewpoint of the string theory world sheet. The conclusion is that all these symmetries are intimately related. In particular, we find that Chern--Simons terms in the three-form field strength $H_{μνρ}$ play a crucial role.
