Tropical degenerations and stable rationality

We use the motivic obstruction to stable rationality introduced by Shinder and the first-named author to establish several new classes of stably irrational hypersurfaces and complete intersections. In particular, we show that very general quartic fivefolds and complete intersections of a quadric and a cubic in $\mathbb P^6$ are stably irrational. An important new ingredient is the use of tropical degeneration techniques.

The essential skeleton of a degeneration of algebraic varieties

In this paper, we explore the connections between the Minimal Model Program and the theory of Berkovich spaces. Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero and let $X$ be a smooth and proper $k((t))$-variety with semi-ample canonical divisor. We prove that the essential skeleton of $X$ coincides with the skeleton of any minimal $dlt$-model and that it is a strong deformation retract of the Berkovich analytification of $X$. As an application, we show that the essential skeleton of a Calabi-Yau variety over $k((t))$ is a pseudo-manifold.

Poles of maximal order of motivic zeta functions

We prove a 1999 conjecture of Veys, which says that the opposite of the log canonical threshold is the only possible pole of maximal order of Denef and Loeser's motivic zeta function associated with a germ of a regular function on a smooth variety over a field of characteristic zero. We apply similar methods to study the weight function on the Berkovich skeleton associated with a degeneration of Calabi-Yau varieties. Our results suggest that the weight function induces a flow on the non-archimedean analytification of the degeneration towards the Kontsevich-Soibelman skeleton.

Semi-stable extensions over 1-dimensional bases

Given a family of Calabi-Yau varieties over the punctured disc or over the field of Laurent series, we show that, after a finite base change, the family can be exended across the origin while keeping the canonical class trivial. More generally, we prove similar extension results for families whose log-canonical class is semi-ample. We use these to show that the Berkovich and essential skeleta agree for smooth varieties over ${\mathbb C}((t))$ with semi-ample canonical class.

The specialization index of a variety over a discretely valued field

Let $X$ be a proper variety over a henselian discretely valued field. An important obstruction to the existence of a rational point on $X$ is the index, the minimal positive degree of a zero cycle on $X$. This paper introduces a new invariant, the specialization index, which is a closer approximation of the existence of a rational point. We provide an explicit formula for the specialization index in terms of an $snc$-model, and we give examples of curves where the index equals one but the specialization index is different from one, and thus explains the absence of a rational point. Our main result states that the specialization index of a smooth, proper, geometrically connected $\mathbb{C}((t))$-variety with trivial coherent cohomology is equal to one.

Weight functions on Berkovich curves

Let $C$ be a curve over a complete discretely valued field $K$. We give tropical descriptions of the weight function attached to a pluricanonical form on $C$ and the essential skeleton of $C$. We show that the Laplacian of the weight function equals the pluricanonical divisor on Berkovich skeleta, and we describe the essential skeleton of $C$ as a combinatorial skeleton of the Berkovich skeleton of the minimal $snc$-model. In particular, if $C$ has semi-stable reduction, then the essential skeleton coincides with the minimal skeleton. As an intermediate step, we describe the base loci of logarithmic pluricanonical line bundles on minimal $snc$-models.

A logarithmic interpretation of Edixhoven's jumps for Jacobians

Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a discretely valued field. Edixhoven has defined a filtration on the special fiber of the Néron model of $A$ that measures the behaviour of the Néron model under tame base change. We interpret the jumps in this filtration in terms of lattices of logarithmic differential forms in the case where $A$ is the Jacobian of a curve $C$, and we give a compact explicit formula for the jumps in terms of the combinatorial reduction data of $C$.

Berkovich skeleta and birational geometry

We give a survey of joint work with Mircea Mustaţă and Chenyang Xu on the connections between the geometry of Berkovich spaces over the field of Laurent series and the birational geometry of one-parameter degenerations of smooth projective varieties. The central objects in our theory are the weight function and the essential skeleton of the degeneration. We tried to keep the text self-contained, so that it can serve as an introduction to Berkovich geometry for birational geometers.

Weight functions on non-archimedean analytic spaces and the Kontsevich-Soibelman skeleton

We associate a weight function to pairs consisting of a smooth and proper variety X over a complete discretely valued field and a differential form on X of maximal degree. This weight function is a real-valued function on the non-archimedean analytification of X. It is piecewise affine on the skeleton of any regular model with strict normal crossings of X, and strictly ascending as one moves away from the skeleton. We apply these properties to the study of the Kontsevich-Soibelman skeleton of such a pair, and we prove that this skeleton is connected when X has geometric genus one. This result can be viewed as an analog of the Shokurov-Kollar connectedness theorem in birational geometry.

Motivic zeta functions for degenerations of abelian varieties and Calabi-Yau varieties

This is a survey on motivic zeta functions associated to abelian varieties and Calabi-Yau varieties over a discretely valued field. We explain how they are related to Denef and Loeser's motivic zeta function associated to a complex hypersurface singularity and we investigate the relation between the poles of the zeta function and the eigenvalues of the monodromy action on the tame $\ell$-adic cohomology of the variety. The motivic zeta function allows to generalize many interesting arithmetic invariants from abelian varieties to Calabi-Yau varieties and to compute them explicitly on a model with strict normal crossings.

Néron models and base change

We study various aspects of the behaviour of Néron models of semi-abelian varieties under finite extensions of the base field, with a special emphasis on wildly ramified Jacobians. In Part 1, we analyze the behaviour of the component groups of the Néron models, and we prove rationality results for a certain generating series encoding their orders. In Part 2, we discuss Chai's base change conductor and Edixhoven's filtration, and their relation to the Artin conductor. All of these results are applied in Part 3 to the study of motivic zeta functions of semi-abelian varieties. Part 4 contains some intriguing open problems and directions for further research. The main tools in this work are non-archimedean uniformization and a detailed analysis of the behaviour of regular models of curves under base change.

Finite group actions, rational fixed points and weak Néron models

If $G$ is a finite $\ell$-group acting on an affine space $\mathbb{A}^n$ over a finite field $K$ of cardinality prime to $\ell$, Serre has shown that there exists a rational fixed point. We generalize this to the case where $K$ is a henselian discretely valued field of characteristic zero with algebraically closed residue field and with residue characteristic different from $\ell$. We also treat the case where the residue field is finite of cardinality $q$ such that $\ell$ divides $q-1$. To this aim, we study group actions on weak Néron models.

Geometric criteria for tame ramification

We prove an A'Campo type formula for the tame monodromy zeta function of a smooth and proper variety over a discretely valued field $K$. As a first application, we relate the orders of the tame monodromy eigenvalues on the $\ell$-adic cohomology of a $K$-curve to the geometry of a relatively minimal $sncd$-model, and we show that the semi-stable reduction theorem and Saito's criterion for cohomological tameness are immediate consequences of this result. As a second application, we compute the error term in the trace formula for smooth and proper $K$-varieties. We see that the validity of the trace formula would imply a partial generalization of Saito's criterion to arbitrary dimension.

Relative motives and the theory of pseudo-finite fields

We generalize the motivic incarnation morphism from the theory of arithmetic integration to the relative case, where we work over a base variety S over a field k of characteristic zero. We develop a theory of constructible effective Chow motives over S, and we show how to associate a motive to any S-variety. We give a geometric proof of relative quantifier elimination for pseudo-finite fields, and we construct a morphism from the Grothendieck ring of the theory of pseudo-finite fields over S, to the tensor product of Q with the Grothendieck ring of constructible effective Chow motives. This morphism yields a motivic realization for the parametrized arithmetic motivic integrals of Cluckers-Loeser. Finally, we define relative arc and jet spaces, and the three relative motivic generating series.
