$H$-umbilical Lagrangian submanifolds of the nearly Kähler $\mathbb{S}^3\times\mathbb{S}^3$

$H$-umbilicity was introduced as an analogue of total umbilicity for Lagrangian submanifolds since, in some relevant cases, totally umbilical Lagrangian submanifolds are automatically totally geodesic. In this paper, we show that in the homogeneous nearly Kähler $\mathbb{S}^3\times\mathbb{S}^3$, also $H$-umbilical Lagrangian submanifolds are automatically totally geodesic.

A geometric study of marginally trapped surfaces in space forms and Robertson-Walker spacetimes -- an overview

A marginally trapped surface in a spacetime is a Riemannian surface whose mean curvature vector is lightlike at every point. In this paper we give an up-to-date overview of the differential geometric study of these surfaces in Minkowski, de Sitter, anti-de Sitter and Robertson-Walker spacetimes. We give the general local descriptions proven by Anciaux and his coworkers as well as the known classifications of marginally trapped surfaces satisfying one of the following additional geometric conditions: having positive relative nullity, having parallel mean curvature vector field, having finite type Gauss map, being invariant under a one-parameter group of ambient isometries, being isotropic, being pseudo-umbilical. Finally, we provide examples of constant Gaussian curvature marginally trapped surfaces and state some open questions.

Lagrangian submanifolds of the complex hyperbolic quadric

We consider the complex hyperbolic quadric ${Q^*}^n$ as a complex hypersurface of complex anti-de Sitter space. Shape operators of this submanifold give rise to a family of local almost product structures on ${Q^*}^n$, which are then used to define local angle functions on any Lagrangian submanifold of ${Q^*}^n$. We prove that a Lagrangian immersion into ${Q^*}^n$ can be seen as the Gauss map of a spacelike hypersurface of (real) anti-de Sitter space and relate the angle functions to the principal curvatures of this hypersurface. We also give a formula relating the mean curvature of the Lagrangian immersion to these principal curvatures. The theorems are illustrated with several examples of spacelike hypersurfaces of anti-de Sitter space and their Gauss maps. Finally, we classify some families of minimal Lagrangian submanifolds of ${Q^*}^n$: those with parallel second fundamental form and those for which the induced sectional curvature is constant. In both cases, the Lagrangian submanifold is forced to be totally geodesic.

Lagrangian submanifolds of the nearly Kähler $\mathbb{S}^3 \times \mathbb{S}^3$ from minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^3$

We study non-totally geodesic Lagrangian submanifolds of the nearly Kähler $\mathbb{S}^3 \times \mathbb{S}^3$ for which the projection on the first component is nowhere of maximal rank. We show that this property can be expressed in terms of the so called angle functions and that such Lagrangian submanifolds are closely related to minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^3$. Indeed, starting from an arbitrary minimal surface, we can construct locally a large family of such Lagrangian immersions, including one exceptional example.

Lagrangian Submanifolds with Constant Angle Functions of the nearly Kähler $\mathbb{S}^3\times\mathbb{S}^3$

We study Lagrangian submanifolds of the nearly Kähler $\mathbb{S}^3\times\mathbb{S}^3$ with respect to their, so called, angle functions. We show that if all angle functions are constant, then the submanifold is either totally geodesic or has constant sectional curvature and there is a classification theorem that follows from a recent paper of B. Dioos, L. Vrancken and X. Wang (arXiv:1604.05060). Moreover, we show that if precisely one angle function is constant, then it must be equal to $0,\fracπ{3}$ or $\frac{2π}{3}$. Using then two remarkable constructions together with the classification of Lagrangian submanifolds of which the first component has nowhere maximal rank, we obtain a classification of such Lagrangian submanifolds.

Umbilical properties of spacelike co-dimension two submanifolds

For Riemannian submanifolds of a semi-Riemannian manifold, we introduce the concepts of \emph{total shear tensor} and \emph{shear operators} as the trace-free part of the corresponding second fundamental form and shape operators. The relationship between these quantities and the umbilical properties of the submanifold is shown. Several novel notions of umbilical submanifolds are then considered along with the classical concepts of totally umbilical and pseudo-umbilical submanifolds. Then we focus on the case of co-dimension $2$, and we present necessary and sufficient conditions for the submanifold to be umbilical with respect to a normal direction. Moreover, we prove that the umbilical direction, if it exists, is unique ---unless the submanifold is totally umbilical--- and we give a formula to compute it explicitly. When the ambient manifold is Lorentzian we also provide a way of determining its causal character. We end the paper by illustrating our results on the Lorentzian geometry of the Kerr black hole.

On holomorphic Riemannian geometry and submanifolds of Wick-related spaces

In this article we show how holomorphic Riemannian geometry can be used to relate certain submanifolds in one pseudo-Riemannian space to submanifolds with corresponding geometric properties in other spaces. In order to do so, we shall first rephrase and extend some background theory on holomorphic Riemannian manifolds, which is essential for the later application of the presented method.

Sequences of harmonic maps in the 3-sphere

We define two transforms between non-conformal harmonic maps from a surface into the 3-sphere. With these transforms one can construct, from one such harmonic map, a sequence of harmonic maps. We show that there is a correspondence between non-conformal harmonic maps into the 3-sphere, $H$-surfaces in Euclidean 3-space and almost complex surfaces in the nearly Kähler manifold $S^3\times S^3$. As a consequence we can construct sequences of $H$-surfaces and almost complex surfaces.

Curvature inequalities for Lagrangian submanifolds: the final solution

Let $M$ be an $n$-dimensional Lagrangian submanifold of a complex space form. We prove a pointwise inequality $$δ(n_1,\ldots,n_k) \leq a(n,k,n_1,\ldots,n_k) \|H\|^2 + b(n,k,n_1,\ldots,n_k)c,$$ with on the left hand side any delta-invariant of the Riemannian manifold $M$ and on the right hand side a linear combination of the squared mean curvature of the immersion and the constant holomorphic sectional curvature of the ambient space. The coefficients on the right hand side are optimal in the sence that there exist non-minimal examples satisfying equality at at least one point. We also characterize those Lagrangian submanifolds satisfying equality at any of their points. Our results correct and extend those given in [B.-Y. Chen and F. Dillen, Optimal general inequalities for Lagrangian submanifolds in complex space forms, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 379 (2011), 229--239].

Gauss maps of constant mean curvature surfaces in three-dimensional homogeneous spaces

It is well-known that for a surface in a 3-dimensional real space form the constancy of the mean curvature is equivalent to the harmonicity of the Gauss map. However, this is not true in general for surfaces in an arbitrary 3-dimensional ambient space. In this paper we study this problem for surfaces in an important and very natural family of 3-dimensional ambient spaces, namely homogeneous spaces. In particular, we obtain a full classification of constant mean curvature surfaces, whose Gauss map satisfies the more mild condition of vertical harmonicity, in all 3-dimensional homogeneous spaces.

Totally umbilical hypersurfaces of manifolds admitting a unit Killing field

We prove that a Riemannian product of type M x R (where R denotes the Euclidean line) admits totally umbilical hypersurfaces if and only if M has locally the structure of a warped product and we give a complete description of the totally umbilical hypersurfaces in this case. Moreover, we give a necessary and sufficient condition under which a Riemannian three-manifold carrying a unit Killing field admits totally geodesic surfaces and we study local and global properties of three-manifolds satisfying this condition.
