Chern classes and transversality for singular spaces

In this paper we compare different notions of transversality for possible singular complex algebraic or analytic subsets of an ambient complex manifold and prove a refined intersection formula for their Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes. In case of a transversal intersection of complex Whitney stratified sets, this result is well known. For splayed subsets it was conjectured (and proven in some cases) by Aluffi and Faber. Both notions are stronger than a micro-local "non-characteristic intersection" condition for the characteristic cycles of (associated) constructible functions, which nevertheless is enough to imply the asked refined intersection formula for the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes. The proof is based the multiplicativity of Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes with respect to cross products, as well as a new Verdier-Riemann-Roch theorem for "non-characteristic pullbacks".

Hirzebruch-Milnor classes and Steenbrink spectra of certain projective hypersurfaces

We show that the Hirzebruch-Milnor class of a projective hypersurface, which gives the difference between the Hirzebruch class and the virtual one, can be calculated by using the Steenbrink spectra of local defining functions of the hypersurface if certain good conditions are satisfied, e.g. in the case of projective hyperplane arrangements, where we can give a more explicit formula. This is a natural continuation of our previous paper on the Hirzebruch-Milnor classes of complete intersections.

Purity for graded potentials and quantum cluster positivity

Consider a smooth quasiprojective variety X equipped with a C*-action, and a regular function f: X -> C which is C*-equivariant with respect to a positive weight action on the base. We prove the purity of the mixed Hodge structure and the hard Lefschetz theorem on the cohomology of the vanishing cycle complex of f on proper components of the critical locus of f, generalizing a result of Steenbrink for isolated quasi-homogeneous singularities. Building on work of Kontsevich-Soibelman, Nagao and Efimov, we use this result to prove the quantum positivity conjecture for cluster mutations for all quivers admitting a positively graded nondegenerate potential. We deduce quantum positivity for all quivers of rank at most 4; quivers with nondegenerate potential admitting a cut; and quivers with potential associated to triangulations of surfaces with marked points and nonempty boundary.

Characteristic classes of singular toric varieties

In this paper we compute the motivic Chern classes and homology Hirzebruch characteristic classes of (possibly singular) toric varieties, which in the complete case fit nicely with a generalized Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch theorem. As special cases, we obtain new (or recover well-known) formulae for the Baum-Fulton-MacPherson Todd (or MacPherson-Chern) classes of toric varieties, as well as for the Thom-Milnor L-classes of simplicial projective toric varieties. We present two different perspectives for the computation of these characteristic classes of toric varieties. First, we take advantage of the torus-orbit decomposition and the motivic properties of the motivic Chern and resp. homology Hirzebruch classes to express the latter in terms of dualizing sheaves and resp. the (dual) Todd classes of closures of orbits. This method even applies to torus-invariant subspaces of a given toric variety. The obtained formula is then applied to weighted lattice point counting in lattice polytopes and their subcomplexes, yielding generalized Pick-type formulae. Secondly, in the case of simplicial toric varieties, we compute our characteristic classes by using the Lefschetz-Riemann-Roch theorem of Edidin-Graham in the context of the geometric quotient description of such varieties. In this setting, we define mock Hirzebruch classes of simplicial toric varieties and investigate the difference between the (actual) homology Hirzebruch class and the mock Hirzebruch class. We show that this difference is localized on the singular locus, and we obtain a formula for it in which the contribution of each singular cone is identified explicitly. Finally, the two methods of computing characteristic classes are combined for proving several characteristic class formulae originally obtained by Cappell and Shaneson in the early 1990s.

Hirzebruch-Milnor classes of complete intersections

We prove a new formula for the Hirzebruch-Milnor classes of global complete intersections with arbitrary singularities describing the difference between the Hirzebruch classes and the virtual ones. This generalizes a formula for the Chern-Milnor classes in the hypersurface case that was conjectured by S. Yokura and was proved by A. Parusinski and P. Pragacz. It also generalizes a formula of J. Seade and T. Suwa for the Chern-Milnor classes of complete intersections with isolated singularities.

Motivic Bivariant Characteristic Classes

Let K_0(V/X) be the relative Grothendieck group of varieties over X in obj(V), with V the category of (quasi-projective) algebraic (resp. compact complex analytic) varieties over a base field k. Then we constructed the motivic Hirzebruch class transformation in the algebraic context for k of characteristic zero and in the compact complex analytic context. It unifies the well-known three characteristic class transformations of singular varieties: MacPherson's Chern class, Baum-Fulton-MacPherson's Todd class and the L-class of Goresky-MacPherson and Cappell-Shaneson. In this paper we construct a bivariant relative Grothendieck group K_0(V/-) and in the algebraic context (in any characteristic) two Grothendieck transformations mC_y resp. T_y defined on K_0(V/-). Evaluating at y=0, we get a motivic lift T_0 of Fulton-MacPherson's bivariant Riemann-Roch transformation. The associated covariant transformations agree for k of characteristic zero with our motivic Chern- and Hirzebruch class transformations defined on K_0(V/X). Finally, evaluating at y=-1, we get for k of characteristic zero, a motivic lift T_{-1} of Ernström-Yokura's bivariant Chern class transformation.

Characteristic classes of Hilbert schemes of points via symmetric products

We obtain a formula for the generating series of (the push-forward under the Hilbert-Chow morphism of) the Hirzebruch homology characteristic classes of the Hilbert schemes of points for a smooth quasi-projective variety of arbitrary pure dimension. This result is based on a geometric construction of a motivic exponentiation generalizing the notion of motivic power structure, as well as on a formula for the generating series of the Hirzebruch homology characteristic classes of symmetric products. We apply the same methods for the calculation of generating series formulae for the Hirzebruch classes of the push-forwards of "virtual motives" of Hilbert schemes of a threefold. As corollaries, we obtain counterparts for the MacPherson (and Aluffi) Chern classes of Hilbert schemes of a smooth quasi-projective variety (resp. for threefolds). For a projective Calabi-Yau threefold, the latter yields a Chern class version of the dimension zero MNOP conjecture.

Characteristic classes of symmetric products of complex quasi-projective varieties

We prove generating series formulae for suitable twisted characteristic classes of symmetric products of a singular complex quasi-projective variety. More concretely, we study homology Hirzebruch classes for motivic coefficients, as well as for complexes of mixed Hodge modules. As a special case, we obtain a generating series formula for the (intersection) homology Hirzebruch classes of symmetric products. In some cases, the latter yields a similar formula for twisted homology L-classes generalizing results of Hirzebruch-Zagier and Moonen. Our methods also apply to the study of Todd classes of (complexes of) coherent sheaves, as well as Chern classes of (complexes of) constructible sheaves, generalizing to arbitrary coefficients results of Moonen and resp. Ohmoto.

Equivariant characteristic classes of singular complex algebraic varieties

Homology Hirzebruch characteristic classes for singular varieties have been recently defined by Brasselet-Schuermann-Yokura as an attempt to unify previously known characteristic class theories for singular spaces (e.g., MacPherson-Chern classes, Baum-Fulton-MacPherson Todd classes, and Goresky-MacPherson L-classes, respectively). In this note we define equivariant analogues of these classes for singular quasi-projective varieties acted upon by a finite group of algebraic automorphisms, and show how these can be used to calculate the homology Hirzebruch classes of global quotient varieties. We also compute the new classes in the context of monodromy problems, e.g., for varieties that fiber equivariantly (in the complex topology) over a connected algebraic manifold. As another application, we discuss Atiyah-Meyer type formulae for twisted Hirzebruch classes of global orbifolds.

Grothendieck groups and a categorification of additive invariants

A topologically-invariant and additive homology class is mostly not a natural transformation as it is. In this paper we discuss turning such a homology class into a natural transformation; i.e., a "categorification" of it. In a general categorical set-up we introduce a generalized relative Grothendieck group from a cospan of functors of categories and also consider a categorification of additive invariants on objects. As an example, we obtain a general theory of characteristic homology classes of singular varieties.

Characteristic classes of mixed Hodge modules

This paper gives an introduction and overview about recent developments on the interaction of the theories of characteristic classes and mixed Hodge theory for singular spaces in the complex algebraic context. It uses M. Saito's deep theory of mixed Hodge modules as a "black box", thinking about them as "constructible or perverse sheaves of Hodge structures", having the same functorial calculus of Grothendieck functors. For the "constant Hodge sheaf", one gets the "motivic characteristic classes" of Brasselet-Schuermann-Yokura, whereas the classes of the "intersection homology Hodge sheaf" were studied by Cappell-Maxim-Shaneson. There are two versions of these characteristic classes. The K-theoretical classes capture information about the graded pieces of the filtered de Rham complex of the filtered D-module underlying a mixed Hodge module. Application of a suitable Todd class transformation then gives classes in homology. These classes are functorial for proper pushdown and exterior products, together with some other properties one would expect for a "good" theory of characteristic classes for singular spaces. For "admissible variation of mixed Hodge structures" they have an explicit classical description in terms of "logarithmic de Rham complexes". On a point space they correspond to a specialization of the Hodge polynomial of a mixed Hodge structure, which one gets by forgetting the weight filtration.

Nearby cycles and characteristic classes of singular spaces

In this paper we give an introduction to our recent work on characteristic classes of complex hypersurfaces based on some talks given at conferences in Strasbourg, Oberwolfach and Kagoshima. We explain the relation between nearby cycles for constructible functions or sheaves as well as for (relative) Grothendieck groups of algebraic varieties and mixed Hodge modules, and the specialization of characteristic classes of singular spaces like the Chern-, Todd-, Hirzebruch- and motivic Chern-classes. As an application we get a description of the differences between the corresponding virtual and functorial characteristic classes of complex hypersurfaces in terms of vanishing cycles related to the singularities of the hypersurface.

Symmetric products of mixed Hodge modules

Generalizing a theorem of Macdonald, we show a formula for the mixed Hodge structure on the cohomology of the symmetric products of bounded complexes of mixed Hodge modules by showing the existence of the canonical action of the symmetric group on the multiple external self-products of complexes of mixed Hodge modules. We also generalize a theorem of Hirzebruch and Zagier on the signature of the symmetric products of manifolds to the case of the symmetric products of symmetric parings on bounded complexes with constructible cohomology sheaves where the pairing is not assumed to be non-degenerate.

Twisted genera of symmetric products

We prove very general formulae for the generating series of (Hodge) genera of symmetric products with coefficients, which hold for complex quasi-projective varieties with any kind of singularities, and which include many of the classical results in the literature as special cases. Important specializations of our results include generating series for extensions of Hodge numbers and Hirzebruch genus to the singular setting and, in particular, generating series for Intersection cohomology Hodge numbers and Goresky-MacPherson Intersection cohomology signatures of symmetric products of complex projective varieties. A very general proof is given based on Kuenneth formulae and pre-lambda structures on the coefficient theory of a point. Moreover, Atiyah's approach to power operations in K-theory also works in this context, giving a nice description of the important related Adams operations. This last approach also allows us to introduce very interesting coefficients on the symmetric products.

Characteristic classes of complex hypersurfaces

The Milnor-Hirzebruch class of a locally complete intersection X in an algebraic manifold M measures the difference between the (Poincare dual of the) Hirzebruch class of the virtual tangent bundle of X and, respectively, the Brasselet-Schuermann-Yokura (homology) Hirzebruch class of X. In this note, we calculate the Milnor-Hirzebruch class of a globally defined algebraic hypersurface X in terms of the corresponding Hirzebruch invariants of singular strata in a Whitney stratification of X. Our approach is based on Schuermann's specialization property for the motivic Hirzebruch class transformation of Brasselet-Schuermann-Yokura. The present results also yield calculations of Todd, Chern and L-type characteristic classes of hypersurfaces.

Index formula for MacPherson cycles of affine algebraic varieties

We give explicit MacPherson cycles for the Chern-MacPherson class of a closed affine algebraic variety $X$ and for any constructible function $α$ with respect to a complex algebraic Whitney stratification of $X$. We define generalized degrees of the global polar varieties and of the MacPherson cycles and we prove a global index formula for the Euler characteristic of $α$. Whenever $α$ is the Euler obstruction of $X$, this index formula specializes to the Seade-Tibar-Verjovsky global counterpart of the Le-Teissier formula for the local Euler obstruction.
