Attosecond Transient Absorption Spectroscopy without Inversion Symmetry

Transient absorption is a very powerful observable in attosecond experiments on atoms, molecules and solids and is frequently used in experiments employing phase-locked few-cycle infrared and XUV laser pulses derived from high harmonic generation. We show numerically and analytically that in non-centrosymmetric systems, such as many polyatomic molecules, which-way interference enabled by the lack of parity conservation leads to new spectral absorption features, which directly reveal the laser electric field. The extension of Attosecond Transient Absorption Spectroscopy (ATAS) to such targets hence becomes sensitive to global and local inversion symmetry. We anticipate that ATAS will find new applications in non-centrosymmetric systems, in which the carrier-to-envelope phase of the infrared pulse becomes a relevant parameter and in which the orientation of the sample and the electronic symmetry of the molecule can be addressed.

On the dynamics of chemical reactions of negative ions

This review discusses the dynamics of negative ion reactions with neutral molecules in the gas phase. Most anion-molecule reactions proceed via a qualitatively different interaction potential than cationic or neutral reactions. It has been and still is the goal of many experiments to understand these reaction dynamics and the different reaction mechanisms they lead to. We will show how rate coefficients and cross sections for anion-molecule reactions are measured and interpreted to yield information on the underlying dynamics. We will also present more detailed approaches that study either the transient reaction complex or the energy- and angle-resolved scattering of negative ions with neutral molecules. With the help of these different techniques many aspects of anion-molecule reaction dynamics could be unravelled in the last years. However, we are still far from a complete understanding of the complex molecular interplay that is at work during a negative ion reaction.

A high resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometer for the detection of ultracold molecules

We have realized a high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometer combined with a magneto-optical trap. The spectrometer enables excellent optical access to the trapped atomic cloud using specifically devised acceleration and deflection electrodes. The ions are extracted along a laser beam axis and deflected onto an off axis detector. The setup is applied to detect atoms and molecules photoassociated from ultracold atoms. The detection is based on resonance-enhanced multi-photon ionization. Mass resolution up to m/Delta m_rms = 1000 at the mass of 133Cs is achieved. The performance of this spectrometer is demonstrated in the detection of photoassociated ultracold 7Li133Cs molecules near a large signal of 133Cs ions.
