Response functions of cold neutron matter: density, spin and current fluctuations

We study the response of a single-component pair-correlated baryonic Fermi-liquid to density, spin, and their current perturbations. A complete set of response functions is derived in the low-temperature regime both within an effective theory based on a small momentum transfer expansion and within a numerical scheme valid for arbitrary momentum transfers. A comparison of these two approaches validates the perturbative approximation within the domain of its convergence. We derive the spectral functions of collective excitations associated with the density, density-current, spin, and spin-current perturbations. The dispersion relations of density and spin fluctuations are derived and it is shown that the density fluctuations lead to exciton-like undamped bound states, whereas the spin excitations correspond to diffusive modes above the pair-breaking threshold. The contribution of the collective pair-breaking modes to the specific heat of neutron matter at subnuclear densities is computed and is shown to be comparable to that of the degenerate electron gas at not too low temperatures.

Axions from cooling compact stars: pair-breaking processes

Once formed in a supernova explosion, a neutron star cools rapidly via neutrino emission during the first 10^4-10^5 yr of its life-time. Here we compute the axion emission rate from baryonic components of a star at temperatures below their respective critical temperatures T_c for normal-superfluid phase transition. The axion production is driven by a charge neutral weak process, associated with Cooper pair breaking and recombination. The requirement that the axion cooling does not overshadow the neutrino cooling puts a lower bound on the axion decay constant f_a > 6 10^9 T_{c9}^{-1} GeV, with T_{c9} = T_c/10^9 K. This translates into a upper bound on the axion mass m_a < 10^{-3} T_{c9} eV.

Response functions of cold neutron matter: density fluctuations

We compute the finite temperature density response function of nonrelativistic cold fermions with an isotropic condensate. The pair-breaking contribution to the response function is evaluated in the limit of small three-momentum transfers q within an effective theory which exploits series expansion in powers of small q/p_F, where p_F is the Fermi momentum. The leading order O(q^2) contribution is universal and depends only on two fundamental scales, the Fermi energy and the pairing gap. The particle-hole Landau Fermi-liquid interaction contributes first at the next-to-leading-order O(q^4). The scattering contribution to the polarization tensor is nonperturbative (in the above sense) and is evaluated numerically. The spectral functions of density fluctuations are constructed and the relevance of the q^2 scaling for the pair-breaking neutrino emission from neutron stars is discussed.

Spatial Wilson loop in continuum, deconfining SU(2) Yang-Mills thermodynamics

The uniquess of the effective actions describing 4D SU(2) and SU(3) continuum, infinite-volume Yang-Mills thermodynamics in their deconfining and preconfining phases is made explicit. Subsequently, the spatial string tension is computed in the approach proposed by Korthals-Altes. This SU(2) calculation is based on a particular, effective two-loop correction to the pressure needed for the extraction of the hypothetic number density of isolated and screened magnetic monopoles or antimonopoles in the deconfining phase. By exponentiating the exchange of the tree-level massless but one-loop dressed mode within a quadratic spatial contour of side-length $L$ in the effective theory we demonstrate that for $L\to\infty$ the Wilson loop exhibits {\sl perimeter} law. This is in contrast to a rigorous {\sl lattice} result subject to the Wilson action and for this action valid at sufficiently high temperature. In the framework of the effective theory there is, however, a regime for small (spatially unresolved) $L$ were the exponent of the spatial Wilson loop possesses curvature as a function of $L$.
