Non-integrability Criterium for Normal Variational Equations around an integrable Subsystem and an example: The Wilbeforce spring-pendulum

In this paper we analyze the non-integrability of the Wilbeforce pendulum by means of Morales-Ramis theory in where is enough to prove that the Galois group of the variational equation is not virtually abelian. We obtain these non-integrability results due to the algebrization of the variational equation falls into a Heun differential equation with four singularities and then we apply Kovacic's algorithm to determine its non-integrability.

Periodic orbits in the restricted four-body problem with two equal masses

The restricted (equilateral) four-body problem consists of three bodies of masses m1, m2 and m3 (called primaries) lying in a Lagrangian configuration of the three-body problem i.e., they remain fixed at the apices of an equilateral triangle in a rotating coordinate system. A massless fourth body moves under the Newtonian gravitational law due to the three primaries, as in the Restricted three-body problem (R3BP), the fourth mass does not affect the motion of the three primaries. In this paper we explore symmetric periodic orbits of the restricted four-body problem (R4BP) for the case of two equal masses where they satisfy approximately the Routh's critical value.

Variational equations of Lagrangian systems and Hamilton's principle

We discuss a recently proposed variational principle for deriving the variational equations associated to any Lagrangian system. The principle gives simultaneously the Lagrange and the variational equations of the system. We define a new Lagrangian in an extended configuration space ---which we call D'Alambert's--- comprising both the original coordinates and the compatible ``virtual displacements'' joining two solutions of the original system. The variational principle is Hamilton's with the new Lagrangian. We use this formulation to obtain constants of motion in the Jacobi equations of any Lagrangian system with symmetries. These constants are related to constants in the original system and so with symmetries of the original Lagrangian. We cast our approach in an intrinsic coordinate free formulation. Our results can be of interest for reducing the dimensions of the equations that characterize perturbations in a Lagrangian control system.
