Observation of interaction-induced mobility edge in a disordered atomic wire

Mobility edge, a critical energy separating localized and extended excitations, is a key concept for understanding quantum localization. Aubry-André (AA) model, a paradigm for exploring quantum localization, does not naturally allow mobility edges due to self-duality. Using the momentum-state lattice of quantum gas of Cs atoms to synthesize a nonlinear AA model, we provide experimental evidence for mobility edge induced by interactions. By identifying the extended-to-localized transition of different energy eigenstates, we construct a mobility-edge phase diagram. The location of mobility edge in the low- or high-energy region is tunable via repulsive or attractive interactions. Our observation is in good agreement with the theory, and supports an interpretation of such interaction-induced mobility edge via a generalized AA model. Our work also offers new possibilities to engineer quantum transport and phase transitions in disordered systems.

Sparse interferometry for measuring multiphoton collective phase

A multiphoton collective phase is a multiphoton-scattering feature that cannot be reduced to a sequence of two-photon scattering events, and the three-photon "triad phas" is the smallest nontrivial example. Observing a higher-order collective phase is experimentally challenging, and only triad and four-photon tetrad collective phases have been observed. We introduce a scheme to make higher-order multiphoton collective-phase observations feasible by designing a sparse interferometer, which significantly reduces complexity compared with the current best scheme for observing a multiphoton collective phase. Specifically, our scheme reduces the optical depth from logarithmic to constant and reduces the number of beam splitters from $O(n\log n)$ to linear scaling with respect to the collective-phase order $n$. As constant depth reduces loss and dispersion to a fixed rate regardless of collective-phase order, a major obstacle to observing large-scale collective phases is removed.

Topological spin texture of chiral edge states in photonic two-dimensional quantum walks

Topological insulators host topology-linked boundary states, whose spin and charge degrees of freedom could be exploited to design topological devices with enhanced functionality. We experimentally observe that dissipationless chiral edge states in a spin-orbit coupled anomalous Floquet topological phase exhibit topological spin texture on boundaries, realized via a two-dimensional quantum walk. Our experiment shows that, for a walker traveling around a closed loop along the boundary in real space, its spin evolves and winds through a great circle on the Bloch sphere, which implies that edge-spin texture has nontrivial winding. This winding is linked to the bulk Dirac Hamiltonian around the energy-gap opening point. Our experiment confirms that two-dimensional anomalous Floquet topological systems exhibit topological spin texture on the boundary, which could inspire novel topology-based spintronic phenomena and devices.

Versatile Cold Atom Source for Multi-Species Experiments

We present a dual-species oven and Zeeman slower setup capable of producing slow, high-flux atomic beams for loading magneto-optical traps. Our compact and versatile system is based on electronic switching between different magnetic field profiles and is applicable to a wide range of multi-species experiments. We give details of the vacuum setup, coils and simple electronic circuitry. In addition, we demonstrate the performance of our system by optimized, sequential loading of magneto-optical traps of lithium-6 and cesium-133.
