Site testing campaign for the Large Optical/infrared Telescope of China: Overview

The Large Optical/infrared Telescope (LOT) is a ground-based 12m diameter optical/infrared telescope which is proposed to be built in the western part of China in the next decade. Based on satellite remote sensing data, along with geographical, logistical and political considerations, three candidate sites were chosen for ground-based astronomical performance monitoring. These sites include: Ali in Tibet, Daocheng in Sichuan, and Muztagh Ata in Xinjiang. Up until now, all three sites have continuously collected data for two years. In this paper, we will introduce this site testing campaign, and present its monitoring results obtained during the period between March 2017 and March 2019.

Site-testing at Muztagh-ata site I: Ground Meteorology and Sky Brightness

Site-testing is crucial for achieving the goal of scientific research and analysis of meteorological and optical observing conditions is one of the basic tasks of it. As one of three potential sites to host 12-meter Large Optical/infrared Telescope (LOT), Muztagh-ata site which is located on the Pamirs Plateau in west China's Xinjiang began its site-testing task in the spring of 2017. In this paper, we firstly start with an introduction to the site and then present a statistical analysis of the ground-level meteorological properties such as air temperature, barometric pressure, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, recorded by automatic weather station with standard meteorological sensors for two-year long. We also show the monitoring results of sky brightness during this period.

Site-testing at Muztagh-ata site II: Seeing statistics

In this article, we present a detailed analysis of the statistical properties of seeing for the Muztagh-ata site which is the candidate site for hosting future Chinese Large Optical/infrared Telescope (LOT) project. The measurement was obtained with Differential Image Motion Monitor (DIMM) from April 2017 to November 2018 at different heights during different periods. The median seeing at 11 meters and 6 meters are very close but different significantly from that on the ground. We mainly analyzed the seeing at 11 meters monthly and hourly, having found that the best season for observing was from late autumn to early winter and seeing tended to improve during the night only in autumn. The analysis of the dependence on temperature inversion, wind speed, direction also was made and the best meteorological conditions for seeing is given.

A Sodium laser guide star coupling efficiency measurement method

Large telescope's adaptive optics (AO) system requires one or several bright artificial laser guide stars to improve its sky coverage. The recent advent of high power sodium laser is perfect for such application. However, besides the output power, other parameters of the laser also have significant impact on the brightness of the generated sodium laser guide star mostly in non-linear relationships. When tuning and optimizing these parameters it is necessary to tune based on a laser guide star generation performance metric. Although return photon flux is widely used, variability of atmosphere and sodium layer make it difficult to compare from site to site even within short time period for the same site. A new metric, coupling efficiency is adopted in our field tests. In this paper, we will introduce our method for measuring the coupling efficiency of a 20W class pulse sodium laser for AO application during field tests that were conducted during 2013-2015.

A Bayesian Method for the Extinction

We propose a Bayesian method to measure the total Galactic extinction parameters, $R_V$ and $A_V$. Validation tests based on the simulated data indicate that the method can achieve the accuracy of around 0.01\,mag. We apply this method to the SDSS BHB stars in the northern Galactic cap and find that the derived extinctions are highly consistent with those from \cite{SFD98}. It suggests that the Bayesian method is promising for the extinction estimation, even the reddening values are close to the observational errors.

Exploring the total Galactic extinction with SDSS BHB stars

Aims: We used 12,530 photometrically-selected blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to estimate the total extinction of the Milky Way at the high Galactic latitudes, $R_V$ and $A_V$ in each line of sight. Methods: A Bayesian method was developed to estimate the reddening values in the given lines of sight. Based on the most likely values of reddening in multiple colors, we were able to derive the values of $R_V$ and $A_V$. Results: We selected 94 zero-reddened BHB stars from seven globular clusters as the template. The reddening in the four SDSS colors for the northern Galactic cap were estimated by comparing the field BHB stars with the template stars. The accuracy of this estimation is around 0.01\,mag for most lines of sight. We also obtained $<R_V>$ to be around 2.40$\pm1.05$ and $A_V$ map within an uncertainty of 0.1\,mag. The results, including reddening values in the four SDSS colors, $A_V$, and $R_V$ in each line of sight, are released on line. In this work, we employ an up-to-date parallel technique on GPU card to overcome time-consuming computations. We plan to release online the C++ CUDA code used for this analysis. Conclusions: The extinction map derived from BHB stars is highly consistent with that from Schlegel, Finkbeiner & Davis(1998). The derived $R_V$ is around 2.40$\pm1.05$. The contamination probably makes the $R_V$ be larger.

The Debris Disk Candidates: Eleven 24$μ$m excess stars in Spitzer SWIRE Fields

We present the optical to mid-infrared SEDs of 11 debris disk candidates from $Spitzer$ SWIRE fields. All these candidates are selected from SWIRE 24$μ$m sources matched with both the SDSS star catalog and the 2MASS point source catalog. They show an excess in the mid-infrared at 24$μ$m ($K_S$-[24]$_{Vega}$ $\ge$ 0.44) indicating the presence of a circumstellar dust disk. The observed optical spectra show that they are all late type main-sequence stars covering the spectral types of FGKM. Their fractional luminosities are well above 5$\times10^{-5}$, even up to the high fractional luminosity of 1$\times10^{-3}$. The high galactic latitudes of SWIRE fields indicate that most of these candidates could belong to the oldest stars in the thick disk. Our results indicate that the high fractional luminosity debris disks could exist in the old solar-like star systems, though they are now still quite rare. Their discoveries at high-galactic latitudes will also provide us an excellent opportunity to the further studies of properties and evolution of the debris disk in the ISM poor environments.

The Photometric System of Tsinghua-NAOC 80-cm Telescope at NAOC Xinglong Observatory

Tsinghua-NAOC (National Astronomical Observatories of China) Telescope (hereafter, TNT) is an 80-cm Cassegrain reflecting telescope located at Xinglong bservatory of NAOC, with main scientific goals of monitoring various transients in the universe such as supernovae, gamma-ray bursts, novae, variable stars, and active galactic nuclei. We present in this paper a systematic test and analysis of the photometric performance of this telescope. Based on the calibration observations on twelve photometric nights, spanning the period from year 2004 to year 2012, we derived an accurate transformation relationship between the instrumental $ubvri$ magnitudes and standard Johnson $UBV$ and Cousins $RI$ magnitudes. In particular, the color terms and the extinction coefficients of different passbands are well determined. With these data, we also obtained the limiting magnitudes and the photometric precision of TNT. It is worthwhile to point out that the sky background at Xinglong Observatory may become gradually worse over the period from year 2005 to year 2012 (e.g., $\sim$21.4 mag vs. $\sim$20.1 mag in the V band).
