Local well-posedness and global stability of one-dimensional shallow water equations with surface tension and constant contact angle

We consider the one-dimensional shallow water problem with capillary surfaces and moving contact {lines}. An energy-based model is derived from the two-dimensional water wave equations, where we explicitly discuss the case of a stationary force balance at a moving contact line and highlight necessary changes to consider dynamic contact angles. The moving contact line becomes our free boundary at the level of shallow water equations, and the depth of the shallow water degenerates near the free boundary, which causes singularities for the derivatives and degeneracy for the viscosity. This is similar to the physical vacuum of compressible flows in the literature. The equilibrium, the global stability of the equilibrium, and the local well-posedness theory are established in this paper.

Global Classical Solutions to the Full Compressible Navier-Stokes System in 3D Exterior Domains

The full compressible Navier-Stokes system (FNS) describing the motion of a viscous, compressible, heat-conductive, and Newtonian polytropic fluid in a three-dimensional (3D) exterior domain is studied. For the initial-boundary-value problem with the slip boundary conditions on the velocity and the Neumann one on the temperature, it is shown that there exists a unique global classical solutions with the initial data which are of small energy but possibly large oscillations. In particular, both the density and temperature are allowed to vanish initially. This is the first result about classical solutions of FNS system in 3D exterior domain.

Resilience-Motivated Distribution System Restoration Considering Electricity-Water-Gas Interdependency

A major outage in the electricity distribution system may affect the operation of water and natural gas supply systems, leading to an interruption of multiple services to critical customers. Therefore, enhancing resilience of critical infrastructures requires joint efforts of multiple sectors. In this paper, a distribution system service restoration method considering the electricity-water-gas interdependency is proposed. The objective is to provide electricity, water, and natural gas supplies to critical customers in the desired ratio according to their needs after an extreme event. The operational constraints of electricity, water, and natural gas networks are considered. The characteristics of electricity-driven coupling components, including water pumps and gas compressors, are also modeled. Relaxation techniques are applied to nonconvex constraints posed by physical laws of those networks. Consequently, the restoration problem is formulated as a mixed-integer second-order cone program, which can readily be solved by the off-the-shelf solvers. The proposed method is validated by numerical simulations on electricity-water-gas integrated systems, developed based on benchmark models of the subsystems. The results indicate that considering the interdependency refines the allocation of limited generation resources and demonstrate the exactness of the proposed convex relaxation.

Global Existence of Strong and Weak Solutions to 2D Compressible Navier-Stokes System in Bounded Domains with Large Data and Vacuum

We study the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes system where the shear viscosity is a positive constant and the bulk one proportional to a power of the density with the power bigger than one and a third. The system is subject to the Navier-slip boundary conditions in a general two-dimensional bounded simply connected domain. For initial density allowed to vanish, we establish the global existence of strong and weak solutions without any restrictions on the size of initial value. To get over the difficulties brought by boundary, on the one hand, we apply Riemann mapping theorem and the pull back Green's function method to get a pointwise representation of the effective viscous flux. On the other hand, observing that the orthogonality is preserved under conformal mapping due to its preservation on the angle, we use the slip boundary conditions to reduce the integral representation to the desired commutator form whose singularities can be cancelled out by using the estimates on the spatial gradient of the velocity.

On the Radiality Constraints for Distribution System Restoration and Reconfiguration Problems

Radiality constraints are involved in both distribution system restoration and reconfiguration problems. However, a set of widely used radiality constraints, i.e., the spanning tree (ST) constraints, has its limitations which have not been well recognized. In this letter, the limitation of the ST constraints is analyzed and an effective set of constraints, referred to as the single-commodity flow constraints, is presented. Furthermore, a combined set of constraints is proposed and case studies indicate that the combined constraints can gain computational efficiency in the reconfiguration problem. Recommendations on the use of radiality constraints are also provided.
