A Two-Stage Motion-Aware Framework for mmWave-based Human Mesh Recovery

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) radar has emerged as a promising sensing modality for human perception due to its robustness under challenging environmental conditions and strong privacy-preserving properties. However, recovering accurate 3D human body meshes from radar observations remains difficult due to severe signal clutter and the inherently partial nature of radar measurements. Previous works typically adopt end-to-end frameworks that directly regress human body parameters from raw radar data, without decoupling signal interpretation from geometric reasoning or exploiting temporal motion cues, limiting learning performance. To address this, we propose a two-stage framework for radar-based human body reconstruction. First, we introduce a human reflection extraction module that performs coarse-to-fine localization and voxel-wise segmentation to produce a confidence-weighted radar volume encoding voxel-level human likelihood. Second, we design a motion-aware mesh recovery network that reconstructs the human body by jointly modeling per-frame geometry and inter-frame dynamics using a dual-branch architecture. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms existing approaches while maintaining computational efficiency.

Residual-loss Anomaly Analysis of Physics-Informed Neural Networks: An Inverse Method for Change-point Detection in Nonlinear Dynamical Systems with Regime Switching

Nonlinear dynamical systems with regime transitions are typically described by ordinary differential equations with jumping parameters parameters. Traditional methods often treat change-point detection and parameter estimation as separate tasks, ignoring the inherent coupling between them. To address this, we propose residual-loss anomaly analysis of physics-informed neural networks, a unified framework that leverages dynamical consistency within the physics-informed learning paradigm. This approach jointly infers piecewise parameters and transition points under a single set of constraints. The method follows a two-stage strategy: First, local physical residuals are analyzed through overlapping subinterval decomposition. When a subinterval spans a true transition point, the residual exhibits a distinct structural elevation in noise-free conditions, which has a non-zero lower bound, enabling effective localization of potential transition intervals. Second, within our framework, change-point locations and piecewise parameters are integrated into a unified physical loss function for joint optimization, enabling simultaneous identification. Experiments on benchmark nonlinear dynamical systems, including Malthusian and logistic growth models, Van der Pol oscillator, Lotka-Volterra model and Lorenz system, demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms traditional decoupled approaches in both change-point localization and parameter estimation accuracy. This study provides an efficient, unified solution for structurally coupled inverse problems in nonlinear dynamical systems with regime switching.

Holistic Evaluation of Multimodal LLMs on Spatial Intelligence

Multimodal models have achieved remarkable progress in recent years. Nevertheless, they continue to exhibit notable limitations in spatial understanding and reasoning, the very capability that anchors artificial general intelligence in the physical world. With the recent release of GPT-5, allegedly the most powerful AI model to date, it is timely to examine where the leading models (GPT, Gemini, Grok, Seed, Qwen, and Intern) stand on the path toward spatial intelligence (SI). We thus propose EASI for holistic Evaluation of multimodAl LLMs on Spatial Intelligence. EASI conceptualizes a comprehensive taxonomy of spatial tasks that unifies existing benchmarks and a growing collection of newly curated ones, enabling systematic evaluation of state-of-the-art models. In this report, we conduct the study across eight key benchmarks, at a cost exceeding ten billion total tokens. Our empirical study then reveals that (1) GPT-5 demonstrates unprecedented strength in SI, yet (2) still falls short of human performance significantly across a broad spectrum of SI-tasks. Moreover, we (3) show that SI-tasks expose greater model capability deficiency than non-SI tasks, to the extent that (4) proprietary models do not exhibit a decisive advantage when facing the most difficult ones. In addition, we conduct a qualitative evaluation across a diverse set of scenarios that are intuitive for humans, yet fail the most advanced multimodal models. EASI is an ongoing community effort: we have open-sourced the EASI codebase that provides a one-stop and reproducible solution with standardized interfaces, integrated protocols and prompts that significantly reduce the friction of configuring and running multiple benchmarks; we have also launched an accompanying EASI leaderboard to provide a continually updated snapshot of model performance across the full SI spectrum, accelerating collective progress toward robust SI.

An Initial Investigation of Neural Replay Simulator for Over-the-Air Adversarial Perturbations to Automatic Speaker Verification

Deep Learning has advanced Automatic Speaker Verification (ASV) in the past few years. Although it is known that deep learning-based ASV systems are vulnerable to adversarial examples in digital access, there are few studies on adversarial attacks in the context of physical access, where a replay process (i.e., over the air) is involved. An over-the-air attack involves a loudspeaker, a microphone, and a replaying environment that impacts the movement of the sound wave. Our initial experiment confirms that the replay process impacts the effectiveness of the over-the-air attack performance. This study performs an initial investigation towards utilizing a neural replay simulator to improve over-the-air adversarial attack robustness. This is achieved by using a neural waveform synthesizer to simulate the replay process when estimating the adversarial perturbations. Experiments conducted on the ASVspoof2019 dataset confirm that the neural replay simulator can considerably increase the success rates of over-the-air adversarial attacks. This raises the concern for adversarial attacks on speaker verification in physical access applications.

Automated Noncontact Trapping of Moving Micro-particle with Ultrasonic Phased Array System and Microscopic Vision

Noncontact particle manipulation (NPM) technology has significantly extended mankind's analysis capability into micro and nano scale, which in turn greatly promoted the development of material science and life science. Though NPM by means of electric, magnetic, and optical field has achieved great success, from the robotic perspective, it is still labor-intensive manipulation since professional human assistance is somehow mandatory in early preparation stage. Therefore, developing automated noncontact trapping of moving particles is worthwhile, particularly for applications where particle samples are rare, fragile or contact sensitive. Taking advantage of latest dynamic acoustic field modulating technology, and particularly by virtue of the great scalability of acoustic manipulation from micro-scale to sub-centimeter-scale, we propose an automated noncontact trapping of moving micro-particles with ultrasonic phased array system and microscopic vision in this paper. The main contribution of this work is for the first time, as far as we know, we achieved fully automated moving micro-particle trapping in acoustic NPM field by resorting to robotic approach. In short, the particle moving status is observed and predicted by binocular microscopic vision system, by referring to which the acoustic trapping zone is calculated and generated to capture and stably hold the particle. The problem of hand-eye relationship of noncontact robotic end-effector is also solved in this work. Experiments demonstrated the effectiveness of this work.

CrossHuman: Learning Cross-Guidance from Multi-Frame Images for Human Reconstruction

We propose CrossHuman, a novel method that learns cross-guidance from parametric human model and multi-frame RGB images to achieve high-quality 3D human reconstruction. To recover geometry details and texture even in invisible regions, we design a reconstruction pipeline combined with tracking-based methods and tracking-free methods. Given a monocular RGB sequence, we track the parametric human model in the whole sequence, the points (voxels) corresponding to the target frame are warped to reference frames by the parametric body motion. Guided by the geometry priors of the parametric body and spatially aligned features from RGB sequence, the robust implicit surface is fused. Moreover, a multi-frame transformer (MFT) and a self-supervised warp refinement module are integrated to the framework to relax the requirements of parametric body and help to deal with very loose cloth. Compared with previous works, our CrossHuman enables high-fidelity geometry details and texture in both visible and invisible regions and improves the accuracy of the human reconstruction even under estimated inaccurate parametric human models. The experiments demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance.

Direct measurement of vorticity using tracer particles with internal markers

Current experiment techniques for vorticity measurement suffer from limited spatial and temporal resolution to resolve the small-scale eddy dynamics in turbulence. In this study, we develop a new method for direct vorticity measurement in fluid flows based on digital inline holography (DIH). The DIH system utilizes a collimated laser beam to illuminate the tracers with internal markers and a digital sensor to record the generated holograms. The tracers made of the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) prepolymer mixed with internal markers are fabricated using a standard microfluidic droplet generator. A rotation measurement algorithm is developed based on the 3D location reconstruction and tracking of the internal markers and is assessed through synthetic holograms to identify the optimal parameter settings and measurement range (e.g., rotation rate from 0.3 to 0.7 rad/frame under numerical aperture of imaging of 0.25). Our proposed method based on DIH is evaluated by a calibration experiment of single tracer rotation, which yields the same optimal measurement range. Using von Kármán swirling flow setup, we further demonstrate the capability of the approach to simultaneously measure the Lagrangian rotation and translation of multiple tracers. Our method can measure vorticity in a small region on the order of 100 $μ$m or less and can be potentially used to quantify the Kolmogorov-scale vorticity field in turbulent flows.

Documentation based Semantic-Aware Log Parsing

With the recent advances of deep learning techniques, there are rapidly growing interests in applying machine learning to log data. As a fundamental part of log analytics, accurate log parsing that transforms raw logs to structured events is critical for subsequent machine learning and data mining tasks. Previous approaches either analyze the source code for parsing or are data-driven such as text clustering. They largely neglect to exploit another widely available and valuable resource, software documentation that provides detailed explanations for the messages, to improve accuracy. In this paper, we propose an approach and system framework to use documentation knowledge for log parsing. With parameter value identification, it not only can improve the parsing accuracy for documented messages but also for undocumented messages. In addition, it can discover the linkages between event templates that are established by sharing parameters and indicate the correlation of the event context.

Evolving Domain Generalization

Domain generalization aims to learn a predictive model from multiple different but related source tasks that can generalize well to a target task without the need of accessing any target data. Existing domain generalization methods ignore the relationship between tasks, implicitly assuming that all the tasks are sampled from a stationary environment. Therefore, they can fail when deployed in an evolving environment. To this end, we formulate and study the \emph{evolving domain generalization} (EDG) scenario, which exploits not only the source data but also their evolving pattern to generate a model for the unseen task. Our theoretical result reveals the benefits of modeling the relation between two consecutive tasks by learning a globally consistent directional mapping function. In practice, our analysis also suggests solving the DDG problem in a meta-learning manner, which leads to \emph{directional prototypical network}, the first method for the DDG problem. Empirical evaluation of both synthetic and real-world data sets validates the effectiveness of our approach.

Fair Representation Learning through Implicit Path Alignment

We consider a fair representation learning perspective, where optimal predictors, on top of the data representation, are ensured to be invariant with respect to different sub-groups. Specifically, we formulate this intuition as a bi-level optimization, where the representation is learned in the outer-loop, and invariant optimal group predictors are updated in the inner-loop. Moreover, the proposed bi-level objective is demonstrated to fulfill the sufficiency rule, which is desirable in various practical scenarios but was not commonly studied in the fair learning. Besides, to avoid the high computational and memory cost of differentiating in the inner-loop of bi-level objective, we propose an implicit path alignment algorithm, which only relies on the solution of inner optimization and the implicit differentiation rather than the exact optimization path. We further analyze the error gap of the implicit approach and empirically validate the proposed method in both classification and regression settings. Experimental results show the consistently better trade-off in prediction performance and fairness measurement.

Learning High-quality Proposals for Acne Detection

Acne detection is crucial for interpretative diagnosis and precise treatment of skin disease. The arbitrary boundary and small size of acne lesions lead to a significant number of poor-quality proposals in two-stage detection. In this paper, we propose a novel head structure for Region Proposal Network to improve the proposals' quality in two ways. At first, a Spatial Aware Double Head(SADH) structure is proposed to disentangle the representation learning for classification and localization from two different spatial perspectives. The proposed SADH ensures a steeper classification confidence gradient and suppresses the proposals having low intersection-over-union(IoU) with the matched ground truth. Then, we propose a Normalized Wasserstein Distance prediction branch to improve the correlation between the proposals' classification scores and IoUs. In addition, to facilitate further research on acne detection, we construct a new dataset named AcneSCU, with high-resolution imageries, precise annotations, and fine-grained lesion categories. Extensive experiments are conducted on both AcneSCU and the public dataset ACNE04, and the results demonstrate the proposed method could improve the proposals' quality, consistently outperforming state-of-the-art approaches. Nonreciprocal waveguide-QED for spinning cavities with multiple coupling points

We investigate chiral emission and the single-photon scattering of spinning cavities coupled to a meandering waveguide at multiple coupling points. It is shown that nonreciprocal photon transmissions occur in the cavities-waveguide system, which stems from interference effects among different coupling points, and frequency shifts induced by the Sagnac effect. The nonlocal interference is akin to the mechanism in giant atoms. In the single-cavity setup, by optimizing the spinning velocity and number of coupling points, the chiral factor can approach 1, and the chiral direction can be freely switched. Moreover, destructive interference gives rise to the complete photon transmission in one direction over the whole optical frequency band, with no analogy in other quantum setups. In the multiple-cavity system, we also investigate the photon transport properties. The results indicate a directional information flow between different nodes. Our proposal provides a novel way to achieve quantum nonreciprocal devices, which can be applied in large-scale quantum chiral networks with optical waveguides.

Insights into ventilation hysteresis shift due to flow unsteadiness in ventilated supercavitation

Understanding ventilation strategy of a supercavity is important for designing high-speed underwater vehicles wherein an artificial gas pocket is created behind a flow separation device for drag reduction. Our study investigates the effect of flow unsteadiness on the ventilation requirements to form (CQf) and collapse (CQc) a supercavity. Imposing flow unsteadiness on the incoming flow has shown an increment in higher CQf at low free stream velocity and lower CQf at high free stream velocity. High-speed imaging reveals distinctly different behaviors in the recirculation region for low and high freestream velocity under unsteady flows. At low free stream velocities, the recirculation region formed downstream of a cavitator shifted vertically with flow unsteadiness, resulting in lower bubble collision and coalescence probability, which is critical for the supercavity formation process. The recirculation region negligibly changed with flow unsteadiness at high free stream velocity and less ventilation is required to form a supercavity compared to that of the steady incoming flow. Such a difference is attributed to the increased transverse Reynolds stress that aids bubble collision in a confined space of the recirculation region. CQc is found to heavily rely on the vertical component of the flow unsteadiness and the free stream velocity. Interfacial instability located upper rear of the supercavity develops noticeably with flow unsteadiness and additional bubbles formed by the distorted interface shed from the supercavity, resulting in an increased CQc. Further analysis on the quantification of such additional bubble leakage rate indicates that the development and amplitude of the interfacial instability accounts for the variation of CQc under a wide range of flow unsteadiness. Our study provides some insights on the design of a ventilation strategy for supercavitating vehicles in practice.

JUNO Physics and Detector

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a 20 kton LS detector at 700-m underground. An excellent energy resolution and a large fiducial volume offer exciting opportunities for addressing many important topics in neutrino and astro-particle physics. With 6 years of data, the neutrino mass ordering can be determined at 3-4 sigma and three oscillation parameters can be measured to a precision of 0.6% or better by detecting reactor antineutrinos. With 10 years of data, DSNB could be observed at 3-sigma; a lower limit of the proton lifetime of 8.34e33 years (90% C.L.) can be set by searching for p->nu_bar K^+; detection of solar neutrinos would shed new light on the solar metallicity problem and examine the vacuum-matter transition region. A core-collapse supernova at 10 kpc would lead to ~5000 IBD and ~2000 (300) all-flavor neutrino-proton (electron) scattering events. Geo-neutrinos can be detected with a rate of ~400 events/year. We also summarize the final design of the JUNO detector and the key R&D achievements. All 20-inch PMTs have been tested. The average photon detection efficiency is 28.9% for the 15,000 MCP PMTs and 28.1% for the 5,000 dynode PMTs, higher than the JUNO requirement of 27%. Together with the >20 m attenuation length of LS, we expect a yield of 1345 p.e. per MeV and an effective energy resolution of 3.02%/\sqrt{E (MeV)}$ in simulations. The underwater electronics is designed to have a loss rate <0.5% in 6 years. With degassing membranes and a micro-bubble system, the radon concentration in the 35-kton water pool could be lowered to <10 mBq/m^3. Acrylic panels of radiopurity <0.5 ppt U/Th are produced. The 20-kton LS will be purified onsite. Singles in the fiducial volume can be controlled to ~10 Hz. The JUNO experiment also features a double calorimeter system with 25,600 3-inch PMTs, a LS testing facility OSIRIS, and a near detector TAO.

Rapid Robust Principal Component Analysis: CUR Accelerated Inexact Low Rank Estimation

Robust principal component analysis (RPCA) is a widely used tool for dimension reduction. In this work, we propose a novel non-convex algorithm, coined Iterated Robust CUR (IRCUR), for solving RPCA problems, which dramatically improves the computational efficiency in comparison with the existing algorithms. IRCUR achieves this acceleration by employing CUR decomposition when updating the low rank component, which allows us to obtain an accurate low rank approximation via only three small submatrices. Consequently, IRCUR is able to process only the small submatrices and avoid expensive computing on the full matrix through the entire algorithm. Numerical experiments establish the computational advantage of IRCUR over the state-of-art algorithms on both synthetic and real-world datasets.

Droplet evaporation residue indicating SARS-COV-2 survivability on surfaces

SARS-CoV-2 survives and remains viable on surfaces for several days under different environments as reported in recent studies. However, it is unclear how the viruses survive for such a long time and why their survivability varies across different surfaces. To address these questions, we conduct systematic experiments investigating the evaporation of droplets produced by a nebulizer and human-exhaled gas on surfaces. We found that these droplets do not disappear with evaporation, but instead shrink to a size of a few micrometers (referred to as residues), persist for more than 24 hours, and are highly durable against changes of environmental conditions. The characteristics of these residues change significantly across surface types. Specifically, surfaces with high thermal conductivity like copper do not leave any resolvable residues, while stainless steel, plastic, and glass surfaces form residues from a varying fraction of all deposited droplets at 40% relative humidity. Lowering humidity level suppresses the formation of residues while increasing humidity level enhances it. Our results suggest that these microscale residues can potentially insulate the virus against environmental changes, allowing them to survive inhospitable environments and remain infectious for prolonged durations after deposition. Our findings can also be extended to other viruses transmitted through respiratory droplets (e.g., SARS-CoV, flu viruses, etc.), and can thus lead to practical guidelines for disinfecting surfaces and other prevention measures (e.g., humidity control) for limiting viral transmission.

Feasibility and physics potential of detecting $^8$B solar neutrinos at JUNO

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory~(JUNO) features a 20~kt multi-purpose underground liquid scintillator sphere as its main detector. Some of JUNO&#39;s features make it an excellent experiment for $^8$B solar neutrino measurements, such as its low-energy threshold, its high energy resolution compared to water Cherenkov detectors, and its much large target mass compared to previous liquid scintillator detectors. In this paper we present a comprehensive assessment of JUNO&#39;s potential for detecting $^8$B solar neutrinos via the neutrino-electron elastic scattering process. A reduced 2~MeV threshold on the recoil electron energy is found to be achievable assuming the intrinsic radioactive background $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th in the liquid scintillator can be controlled to 10$^{-17}$~g/g. With ten years of data taking, about 60,000 signal and 30,000 background events are expected. This large sample will enable an examination of the distortion of the recoil electron spectrum that is dominated by the neutrino flavor transformation in the dense solar matter, which will shed new light on the tension between the measured electron spectra and the predictions of the standard three-flavor neutrino oscillation framework. If $Δm^{2}_{21}=4.8\times10^{-5}~(7.5\times10^{-5})$~eV$^{2}$, JUNO can provide evidence of neutrino oscillation in the Earth at the about 3$σ$~(2$σ$) level by measuring the non-zero signal rate variation with respect to the solar zenith angle. Moveover, JUNO can simultaneously measure $Δm^2_{21}$ using $^8$B solar neutrinos to a precision of 20\% or better depending on the central value and to sub-percent precision using reactor antineutrinos. A comparison of these two measurements from the same detector will help elucidate the current tension between the value of $Δm^2_{21}$ reported by solar neutrino experiments and the KamLAND experiment.

Risk assessment of airborne transmission of COVID-19 by asymptomatic individuals under different practical settings

The lack of quantitative risk assessment of airborne transmission of COVID-19 under practical settings leads to large uncertainties and inconsistencies in our preventive measures. Combining in situ measurements and numerical simulations, we quantify the exhaled particles from normal respiratory behaviors and their transport under elevator, small classroom and supermarket settings to evaluate the risk of inhaling potentially virus-containing particles. Our results show that the design of ventilation is critical for reducing the risk of particle encounters. Inappropriate design can significantly limit the efficiency of particle removal, create local hot spots with orders of magnitude higher risks, and enhance particle deposition causing surface contamination. Additionally, our measurements reveal the presence of substantial fraction of crystalline particles from normal breathing and its strong correlation with breathing depth.

TAO Conceptual Design Report: A Precision Measurement of the Reactor Antineutrino Spectrum with Sub-percent Energy Resolution

The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO, also known as JUNO-TAO) is a satellite experiment of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). A ton-level liquid scintillator detector will be placed at about 30 m from a core of the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant. The reactor antineutrino spectrum will be measured with sub-percent energy resolution, to provide a reference spectrum for future reactor neutrino experiments, and to provide a benchmark measurement to test nuclear databases. A spherical acrylic vessel containing 2.8 ton gadolinium-doped liquid scintillator will be viewed by 10 m^2 Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) of >50% photon detection efficiency with almost full coverage. The photoelectron yield is about 4500 per MeV, an order higher than any existing large-scale liquid scintillator detectors. The detector operates at -50 degree C to lower the dark noise of SiPMs to an acceptable level. The detector will measure about 2000 reactor antineutrinos per day, and is designed to be well shielded from cosmogenic backgrounds and ambient radioactivities to have about 10% background-to-signal ratio. The experiment is expected to start operation in 2022.
