Observation of Anomalous Decay of a Polarized Three-Component Fermi Gas

Systems of fermions with multiple internal states, such as quarks in quantum chromodynamics and nucleons in nuclear matter, are at the heart of some of the most complex quantum many-body problems. The stability of such many-body multi-component systems is crucial to understanding, for instance, baryon formation and the structure of nuclei, but these fermionic problems are typically very challenging to tackle theoretically. Versatile experimental platforms on which to study analogous problems are thus sought after. Here, we report the creation of a uniform gas of three-component fermions. We characterize the decay of this system across a range of interaction strengths and observe nontrivial competition between two- and three-body loss processes. We observe anomalous decay of the polarized (i.e. spin-population imbalanced) gas, in which the loss rates of each component unexpectedly differ. We introduce a generalized three-body rate equation which captures the decay dynamics, but the underlying microscopic mechanism is unknown.

Dynamics of nonlinear hyperbolic equations of Kirchhoff type

In this paper, we study the initial boundary value problem of the important hyperbolic Kirchhoff equation $$u_{tt}-\left(a \int_Ω|\nabla u|^2 \dif x +b\right)Δu = λu+ |u|^{p-1}u ,$$ where $a$, $b>0$, $p>1$, $λ\in \mathbb{R}$ and the initial energy is arbitrarily large. We prove several new theorems on the dynamics such as the boundedness or finite time blow-up of solution under the different range of $a$, $b$, $λ$ and the initial data for the following cases: (i) $1<p<3$, (ii) $p=3$ and $a>1/Λ$, (iii) $p=3$, $a \leq 1/Λ$ and $\lam <b\lam_1$, (iv) $p=3$, $a < 1/Λ$ and $\lam >b\lam_1$, (v) $p>3$ and $\lam\leq b\lam_1$, (vi) $p>3$ and $\lam> b\lam_1$, where $\lam_1 = \inf\left\{\|\nabla u\|^2_2 :~ u\in H^1_0(Ω)\ {\rm and}\ \|u\|_2 =1\right\}$, and $Λ= \inf\left\{\|\nabla u\|^4_2 :~ u\in H^1_0(Ω)\ {\rm and}\ \|u\|_4 =1\right\}$. Moreover, we prove the invariance of some stable and unstable sets of the solution for suitable $a$, $b$ and $\lam$, and give the sufficient conditions of initial data to generate a vacuum region of the solution. Due to the nonlocal effect caused by the nonlocal integro-differential term, we show many interesting differences between the blow-up phenomenon of the problem for $a>0$ and $a=0$.

Periodic solutions to Klein-Gordon systems with linear couplings

In this paper, we study the nonlinear Klein-Gordon systems arising from relativistic physics and quantum field theories $$\left\{\begin{array}{lll} u_{tt}- u_{xx} +bu + \varepsilon v + f(t,x,u) =0,\; v_{tt}- v_{xx} +bv + \varepsilon u + g(t,x,v) =0 \end{array}\right. $$ where $u,v$ satisfy the Dirichlet boundary conditions on spatial interval $[0, π]$, $b>0$ and $f$, $g$ are $2π$-periodic in $t$. We are concerned with the existence, regularity and asymptotic behavior of time-periodic solutions to the linearly coupled problem as $\varepsilon$ goes to 0. Firstly, under some superlinear growth and monotonicity assumptions on $f$ and $g$, we obtain the solutions $(u_\varepsilon, v_\varepsilon)$ with time-period $2π$ for the problem as the linear coupling constant $\varepsilon$ is sufficiently small, by constructing critical points of an indefinite functional via variational methods. Secondly, we give precise characterization for the asymptotic behavior of these solutions, and show that as $\varepsilon\rightarrow 0$, $(u_\varepsilon, v_\varepsilon)$ converge to the solutions of the wave equations without the coupling terms. Finally, by careful analysis which are quite different from the elliptic regularity theory, we obtain some interesting results concerning the higher regularity of the periodic solutions.

Engineering bandgaps of monolayer MoS2 and WS2 on fluoropolymer substrates by electrostatically tuned many-body effects

Intrinsic electrical and excitonic properties of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides are studied on CYTOP fluoropolymer substrates with greatly suppressed unintentional doping and dielectric screening. Ambipolar transport behavior is observed in monolayer WS2 by applying solid states backdates. The excitonic properties of monolayer MoS2 and WS2 are determined by intricate interplays between the bandage renormalization, Pauli blocking and carrier screening against carrier doping.
