Microwave excitations and hysteretic magnetization dynamics of stripe domain films

FeNi films with the stripe domain (SD) pattern are prepared by electrodeposition and sputtering methods. The magnetic domain, static magnetic parameters, and quality factor, as well as dynamic properties of the two films, are respectively performed. The results show the magnetizations of the film were dependent on the direction of SD, and the rotation of the SD is lagging behind the magnetization reversal. The microwave properties of the SD emerge dynamic hysteresis before the saturation magnetic field. These microwave properties are selectively excited with acoustic mode, optical mode, and spin-wave mode. The frequency and intensity of different resonance modes of stripe domain are determined by the local magnetization. The magnetization variations and the rotation of SD of different modes are further illuminated by the micromagnetic simulation. The magnetic anisotropy and the resonance intensity of permeability of different modes were finally described by the modified resonance equations.

Proposal for the search for exotic spin-spin interactions at the micrometer scale using functionalized cantilever force sensors

Spin-dependent exotic interactions can be generated by exchanging hypothetical bosons, which were introduced to solve some puzzles in physics. Many precision experiments have been performed to search for such interactions, but no confirmed observation has been made. Here, we propose new experiments to search for the exotic spin-spin interactions that can be mediated by axions or Z$^\prime$ bosons. A sensitive functionalized cantilever is utilized as a force sensor to measure the interactions between the spin-polarized electrons in a periodic magnetic source structure and a closed-loop magnetic structure integrated on the cantilever. The source is set to oscillate during data acquisition to modulate the exotic force signal to high harmonics of the oscillating frequency. This helps to suppress the spurious signals at the signal frequency. Different magnetic source structures are designed for different interaction detections. A magnetic stripe structure is designed for Z$^\prime$-mediated interaction, which is insensitive to the detection of axion-mediated interaction. This allows us to measure the coupling constant of both if we assume both exist. With the force sensitivity achievable at low temperature, the proposed experiments are expected to search for the parameter spaces with much smaller coupling constant than the current stringent constraints from micrometer to millimeter range. Specifically, the lower bound of the parameter space will be seven orders of magnitude lower than the stringent constraints for Z$^\prime$-mediated interaction, and an order of magnitude lower for axion-mediated interaction, at the interaction range of $10\, μ$m.

Solving systems of linear equations through zero forcing set and application to lights out

Let $\mathbb{F}$ be any field, we consider solving $Ax=b$ repeatedly for a matrix $A\in\mathbb{F}^{n\times n}$ of $m$ non-zero elements, and multiple different $b\in\mathbb{F}^{n}$. If we are given a zero forcing set of $A$ of size $k$, we can then build a data structure in $O(mk)$ time, such that each instance of $Ax=b$ can be solved in $O(k^2+m)$ time. As an application, we show how the lights out game in an $n\times n$ grid is solved in $O(n^3)$ time, and then improve the running time to $O(n^ω\log n)$ by exploiting the repeated structure in grids.

The skyrmion bags in an anisotropy gradient

Skyrmion bags as spin textures with arbitrary topological charge are expected to be the carriers in racetrack memory. Here, we theoretically and numerically investigated the dynamics of skyrmion bags in an anisotropy gradient. It is found that, without the boundary potential, the dynamics of skyrmion bags are dependent on the spin textures, and the velocity of skyrmionium with $Q = 0$ is faster than other skyrmion bags. However, when the skyrmion bags move along the boundary, the velocities of all skyrmion bags with different $Q$ are same. This can be attributed to the same value of $u/η_{xx}$, where the $u$ and $η_{xx}$ are the terms related to the magnetization distribution of skyrmion bag. In addition, we theoretically derived the dynamics of skyrmion bags in the two cases using the Thiele approach and discussed the scope of Thiele equation. Within a certain range, the simulation results are in good agreement with the analytically calculated results. Our findings provide an alternative way to manipulate the racetrack memory based on the skyrmion bags.

Commensurability between element symmetry and the number of skyrmions governing skyrmion diffusion in confined geometries

Magnetic skyrmions are topological magnetic structures, which exhibit quasi-particle properties and can show enhanced stability against perturbation from thermal noise. Recently, thermal Brownian diffusion of these quasi-particles has been found in continuous films and applications in unconventional computing have received significant attention, which however require structured elements. Thus, as the next necessary step, we here study skyrmion diffusion in confined geometries and find it to be qualitatively different: The diffusion is governed by the interplay between the total number of skyrmions and the structure geometry. In particular, we ascertain the effect of circular and triangular geometrical confinement and find that for triangular geometries the behavior is drastically different for the cases when the number of skyrmions in the element is either commensurate or incommensurate with a symmetric filling of the element. This influence of commensurability is corroborated by simulations of a quasi-particle model.

Direct Imaging of Resonant Phonon-Magnon Coupling

Direct detection of phonons is important for the investigation of information interconversion between the resonantly coupled magnons and phonons. Here we report resonant coupling of magnons and phonons, which can be directly visualized by using micro focused Brillouin light scattering in Ni/LiNbO3 hybrid heterostructures. The patterns of surface acoustic wave phonons, originating from the interference between the original wave ψ0(A_0,k) and reflected wave ψ1(A_1,-k), can be modulated by magnetic field due to the magnon-phonon coupling. By analyzing the information of phonons obtained from Brillouin spectroscopy, the properties of the magnon system (Ni film), e.g., ferromagnetic resonance field and resonance linewidth can be determined. The results provide spatially resolved information about phonon manipulation and detection in a coupled magnon-phonon system.

Interaction between defect and skyrmion in nanodisk

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected stable magnetization configurations, which are expected to be a promising candidate as information carrier, while defect is inevitable and plays an important role on the stabilization and movement of skyrmion. In this paper, we investigated the influence of a point defect and a ring defect on the stabilization and dynamics of skyrmion in the nanodisk, where the defect are acquired by local modification magnetic material parameters. Considering the combined action of geometry confinement and pinning effect, we demonstrate the preferred skyrmion position as a function of defect type and distance between skyrmion and a point defect. We also show the confinement effect on skyrmion size in the presence of a ring defect due to circular symmetry. Finally, in the application of spin transfer nano-oscillator, we show that the skyrmion can be pinned or rotate in the nanodisk, the oscillator frequency can be modified in a large variation by the ring defect. These findings provide a complete understanding of interaction between skyrmion and defect in the confined geometry and may provide a good strategy for the design of skyrmion oscillators.

The Hirzebruch genera of complete intersections

Following Brooks's calculation of the $\hat{A}$-genus of complete intersections, a new and more computable formula about the $\hat{A}$-genus and $α$-invariant will be described as polynomials of multi-degree and dimension. We also give an iterated formula of $\hat{A}$-genus and the necessary and sufficient conditions for the vanishing of $\hat{A}$-genus of complex even dimensional spin complete intersections. Finally, we obtain a general formula about the Hirzebruch genus of complete intersections, and calculate some classical Hirzebruch genera as examples.

Understanding Electricity-Theft Behavior via Multi-Source Data

Electricity theft, the behavior that involves users conducting illegal operations on electrical meters to avoid individual electricity bills, is a common phenomenon in the developing countries. Considering its harmfulness to both power grids and the public, several mechanized methods have been developed to automatically recognize electricity-theft behaviors. However, these methods, which mainly assess users' electricity usage records, can be insufficient due to the diversity of theft tactics and the irregularity of user behaviors. In this paper, we propose to recognize electricity-theft behavior via multi-source data. In addition to users' electricity usage records, we analyze user behaviors by means of regional factors (non-technical loss) and climatic factors (temperature) in the corresponding transformer area. By conducting analytical experiments, we unearth several interesting patterns: for instance, electricity thieves are likely to consume much more electrical power than normal users, especially under extremely high or low temperatures. Motivated by these empirical observations, we further design a novel hierarchical framework for identifying electricity thieves. Experimental results based on a real-world dataset demonstrate that our proposed model can achieve the best performance in electricity-theft detection (e.g., at least +3.0% in terms of F0.5) compared with several baselines. Last but not least, our work has been applied by the State Grid of China and used to successfully catch electricity thieves in Hangzhou with a precision of 15% (an improvement form 0% attained by several other models the company employed) during monthly on-site investigation.

Phonon Transport Controlled by Ferromagnetic Resonance

The resonant coupling of phonons and magnons is important for the interconversion of phononic and spin degrees of freedom. We studied the phonon transmission in LiNbO3 manipulated by the dynamic magnetization in a Ni thin film. It was observed that the phonons could be absorbed strongly through resonant magnon-phonon coupling, which was realized by optimizing the interfacial coupling between Ni and LiNbO3. The line shapes of phonon transmission were further investigated considering the magnon-phonon interconversion in the elastically driven ferromagnetic resonance process. The results promote unique routes for phonon manipulation and detection in the presence of magnetization dynamics.

Spin current pumped by resonant skyrmion

Spin pumping is a widely recognized method to generate the spin current in the spintronics, which is acknowledged as a fundamentally dynamic process equivalent to the spin-transfer torque. In this work, we theoretically verify that the oscillating spin current can be pumped from the microwave-motivated breathing skyrmion. The skyrmion spin pumping can be excited by a relatively low frequency compared with the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and the current density is larger than the ordinary FMR spin pumping. Based on the skyrmion spin pumping, we build a high reading-speed racetrack memory model whose reading speed is an order of magnitude higher than the SOT (spin-orbit torque) /STT (spin-transfer torque) skyrmion racetrack. Our work explored the spin pumping phenomenon in the skyrmion, and it may contribute to the applications of the skyrmion-based device.

Test of non-Newtonian gravitational force at micrometer range

We report an experimental test of non-Newtonian gravitational forces at mi- crometer range. To experimentally subtract off the Casimir force and the electrostatic force background, differential force measurements were performed by sensing the lateral force between a gold sphere and a density modulated source mass using a soft cantilever. The current sensitivity is limited by the patch electrostatic force, which is further improved by two dimensional (2D) force mapping. The preliminary result sets a model independent constraint on the Yukawa type force at this range.

Comparative study of microwave absorption in Ni/SiO2 and SiO2/Ni core-shell structures

Ni coated SiO2 and SiO2 coated Ni composite particles with core-shell structures were designed, prepared and their microwave absorption properties were characterized. The comparison study of the shell effect on the effective electromagnetic parameters reveals that the effective permittivity/permeability was crucially determined by the percent and the intrinsic electromagnetic parameters of the component materials regardless of various core/shell structures. Both of the composite core-shell structures could have good microwave absorption properties. Investigation of the input impedance indicates that, good microwave absorption performances are a consequence of proper electromagnetic impedance matches when the effective electromagnetic parameters were modulated.

Effect of Zn substitution on morphology and magnetic properties of copper ferrite nanofibers

Spinel ferrite Cu1-xZnxFe2O4 nanofibers over a compositional range 0 < x < 1 were prepared by electrospinning combined with sol-gel method. The influence of Zn2+ ions substitution on morphology, structure, and magnetic properties of copper ferrite has been investigated. The results show that surface of CuFe2O4 nanofibers consists of small open porosity, while surface of doped nanofibers reveals smooth and densified nature. With increasing Zn substitution, saturation magnetization initially increases and then decreases with a maximum value of 58.4 emu/g at x = 0.4, coercivity and square ratio all decrease. The influence of substitution on magnetic properties is related with the cation distraction and exchange interactions between spinel lattices.
