We give a simple description of the closure of the nilpotent orbits appearing as associated varieties of admissible affine vertex algebras in terms of primitive ideals.
First, we prove the Kac-Wakimoto conjecture on modular invariance of characters of exceptional affine W-algebras. In fact more generally we prove modular invariance of characters of all lisse W-algebras obtained through Hamiltonian reduction of admissible affine vertex algebras. Second, we prove the rationality of a large subclass of these W-algebras, which includes all exceptional W-algebras of type A and lisse subregular W-algebras in simply laced types. Third, for the latter cases we compute S-matrices and fusion rules. Our results provide the first examples of rational W-algebras associated with non-principal distinguished nilpotent elements, and the corresponding fusion rules are rather mysterious.
In 1993 Schellekens proved that the weight-one space $V_1$ of a strongly rational, holomorphic vertex operator algebra $V$ of central charge 24 must be one of 71 Lie algebras. During the following three decades, in a combined effort by many authors, it was proved that each of these Lie algebras is realised by such a vertex operator algebra and that, except for $V_1=\{0\}$, this vertex operator algebra is uniquely determined by $V_1$. In this paper we give a fundamentally different, simpler proof of Schellekens' list of 71 Lie algebras. Using the dimension formula in arXiv:1910.04947 and Kac's "very strange formula" we show that every strongly rational, holomorphic vertex operator algebra $V$ of central charge 24 with $V_1\neq\{0\}$ can be obtained by an orbifold construction from the Leech lattice vertex operator algebra $V_Λ$. This suffices to restrict the possible Lie algebras that can occur as weight-one space of $V$ to the 71 of Schellekens. Moreover, the fact that each strongly rational, holomorphic vertex operator algebra $V$ of central charge 24 comes from the Leech lattice $Λ$ can be used to classify these vertex operator algebras by studying properties of the Leech lattice. We demonstrate this for 43 of the 70 non-zero Lie algebras on Schellekens' list, omitting those cases that are too computationally expensive.
We prove a new Fermionic quasiparticle sum expression for the character of the Ising model vertex algebra, related to the Jackson-Slater $q$-series identity of Rogers-Ramanujan type and to Nahm sums for the matrix $\left( \begin{smallmatrix} 8 & 3 \\ 3 & 2 \end{smallmatrix} \right)$. We find, as consequences, an explicit monomial basis for the Ising model, and a description of its singular support. We find that the ideal sheaf of the latter, defining it as a subscheme of the arc space of its associated scheme, is finitely generated as a differential ideal. We prove three new $q$-series identities of the Rogers-Ramanujan-Slater type associated with the three irreducible modules of the Virasoro Lie algebra of central charge $1/2$. We give a combinatorial interpretation to the identity associated with the vacuum module.
We discuss the appearance of Jacobi automorphic forms in the theory of superconformal vertex algebras, explaining it by way of supercurves and formal geometry. We touch on related topics such as Ramanujan's differential equations for Eisenstein series.
We show that trace functions on modules of topological N=2 super vertex algebras give rise to conformal blocks on elliptic supercurves. We show that they satisfy a system of linear partial differential equations with respect to the modular parameters of the supercurves. Under some finiteness condition on the vertex algebra these differential equations can be interpreted as a connection on the vector bundle of conformal blocks. We show that this connection is equivariant with respect to a natural action of the Jacobi modular group on the modular parameters and the trace functions. In the appendix we prove the convergence of the trace functions.
The purpose of this paper is to generalize Zhu's theorem about characters of modules over a vertex operator algebra graded by integer conformal weights, to the setting of a vertex operator superalgebra graded by rational conformal weights. To recover SL_2(Z)-invariance of the characters it turns out to be necessary to consider twisted modules alongside ordinary ones. It also turns out to be necessary, in describing the space of conformal blocks in the supersymmetric case, to include certain `odd traces' on modules alongside traces and supertraces. We prove that the set of supertrace functions, thus supplemented, spans a finite dimensional SL_2(Z)-invariant space. We close the paper with several examples.
We begin by reviewing Zhu's theorem on modular invariance of trace functions associated to a vertex operator algebra, as well as a generalisation by the author to vertex operator superalgebras. This generalisation involves objects that we call `odd trace functions'. We examine the case of the N=1 superconformal algebra. In particular we compute an odd trace function in two different ways, and thereby obtain a new representation theoretic interpretation of a well known classical identity due to Jacobi concerning the Dedekind eta function.
The study of twisted representations of graded vertex algebras is important for understanding orbifold models in conformal field theory. In this paper we consider the general set-up of a vertex algebra $V$, graded by $\G/\Z$ for some subgroup $\G$ of $\R$ containing $\Z$, and with a Hamiltonian operator $H$ having real (but not necessarily integer) eigenvalues. We construct the directed system of twisted level $p$ Zhu algebras $\zhu_{p, \G}(V)$, and we prove the following theorems: For each $p$ there is a bijection between the irreducible $\zhu_{p, \G}(V)$-modules and the irreducible $\G$-twisted positive energy $V$-modules, and $V$ is $(\G, H)$-rational if and only if all its Zhu algebras $\zhu_{p, \G}(V)$ are finite dimensional and semisimple. The main novelty is the removal of the assumption of integer eigenvalues for $H$. We provide an explicit description of the level $p$ Zhu algebras of a universal enveloping vertex algebra, in particular of the Virasoro vertex algebra $\vir^c$ and the universal affine Kac-Moody vertex algebra $V^k(\g)$ at non-critical level. We also compute the inverse limits of these directed systems of algebras.
