Energy-stable discretization of two-phase flows in deformable porous media with frictional contact at matrix-fracture interfaces

We address the discretization of two-phase Darcy flows in a fractured and deformable porous medium, including frictional contact between the matrix-fracture interfaces. Fractures are described as a network of planar surfaces leading to the so-called mixed- or hybrid-dimensional models. Small displacements and a linear elastic behavior are considered for the matrix. Phase pressures are supposed to be discontinuous at matrix-fracture interfaces, as they provide a better accuracy than continuous pressure models even for high fracture permeabilities. The general gradient discretization framework is employed for the numerical analysis, allowing for a generic stability analysis and including several conforming and nonconforming discretizations. We establish energy estimates for the discretization, and prove existence of a solution. To simulate the coupled model, we employ a Two-Point Flux Approximation (TPFA) finite volume scheme for the flow and second-order ($\mathbb P_2$) finite elements for the mechanical displacement coupled with face-wise constant ($\mathbb P_0$) Lagrange multipliers on fractures, representing normal and tangential stresses, to discretize the frictional contact conditions. This choice allows to circumvent possible singularities at tips, corners, and intersections between fractures, and provides a local expression of the contact conditions. We present numerical simulations of two benchmark examples and one realistic test case based on a drying model in a radioactive waste geological storage structure.

Improved error estimates for Hybrid High-Order discretizations of Leray-Lions problems

We derive novel error estimates for Hybrid High-Order (HHO) discretizations of Leray-Lions problems set in W^(1,p) with p in (1,2]. Specifically, we prove that, depending on the degeneracy of the problem, the convergence rate may vary between (k+1)(p-1) and (k+1), with k denoting the degree of the HHO approximation. These regime-dependent error estimates are illustrated by a complete panel of numerical experiments.

An arbitrary-order discrete de Rham complex on polyhedral meshes. Part II: Consistency

In this paper we prove a complete panel of consistency results for the discrete de Rham (DDR) complex introduced in the companion paper [D. A. Di Pietro and J. Droniou, An arbitrary-order discrete de Rham complex on polyhedral meshes. Part I: Exactness and Poincaré inequalities, 2021, submitted], including primal and adjoint consistency for the discrete vector calculus operators, and consistency of the corresponding potentials. The theoretical results are showcased by performing a full convergence analysis for a DDR approximation of a magnetostatics model. Numerical results on three-dimensional polyhedral meshes complete the exposition.

Convergence in $C(\lbrack0,T\rbrack;L^2(Ω))$ of weak solutions to perturbed doubly degenerate parabolic equations

We study the behaviour of solutions to a class of nonlinear degenerate parabolic problems when the data are perturbed. The class includes the Richards equation, Stefan problem and the parabolic $p$-Laplace equation. We show that, up to a subsequence, weak solutions of the perturbed problem converge uniformly-in-time to weak solutions of the original problem as the perturbed data approach the original data. We do not assume uniqueness or additional regularity of the solution. However, when uniqueness is known, our result demonstrates that the weak solution is uniformly temporally stable to perturbations of the data. Beginning with a proof of temporally-uniform, spatially-weak convergence, we strengthen the latter by relating the unknown to an underlying convex structure that emerges naturally from energy estimates on the solution. The double degeneracy --- shown to be equivalent to a maximal monotone operator framework --- is handled with techniques inspired by a classical monotonicity argument and a simple variant of the compensated compactness phenomenon.

A mixed finite volume scheme for anisotropic diffusion problems on any grid

We present a new finite volume scheme for anisotropic heterogeneous diffusion problems on unstructured irregular grids, which simultaneously gives an approximation of the solution and of its gradient. In the case of simplicial meshes, the approximate solution is shown to converge to the continuous ones as the size of the mesh tends to 0, and an error estimate is given. In the general case, we propose a slightly modified scheme for which we again prove the convergence, and give an error estimate. An easy implementation method is then proposed, and the efficiency of the scheme is shown on various types of grids.
