The almost Borel structure of diffeomorphisms with some hyperbolicity

These lecture notes focus on a recent result of Mike Hochman: an arbitrary standard Borel system can be embedded into a mixing Markov with equal entropy, respecting all invariant probability measures, with two exceptions: those carried by periodic orbits and those with maximal entropy. We discuss the corresponding notions of almost Borel embedding and isomorphism and universality. The main part of this paper is devoted to a self-contained and detailed proof of Hochman's theorem. We then explain how Katok's horseshoe theorem can be used to analyze diffeomorphisms with "enough" measures that are hyperbolic in the sense of Pesin theory, in both mixing and non-mixing situations. In the latter setting, new invariants generalizing the measures maximizing the entropy emerge.

Bowen's entropy-conjugacy conjecture is true up to finite index

For a topological dynamical system consisting of a continuous map f, and a (not necessarily compact) subset Z of X, Bowen (1973) defined a dimension-like version of entropy, h_X(f,Z). In the same work, he introduced a notion of entropy-conjugacy for pairs of invertible compact systems: the systems (X,f) and (Y,g) are entropy-conjugate if there exist invariant Borel subsets X' of X and Y' of Y such that h_X(f,X\setminus X') < h_X(f,X), h_Y(g,Y \setminus Y') < h_Y(g,Y), and (X',f|_{X'}) is topologically conjugate to (Y',g|_{Y'}). Bowen conjectured that two mixing shifts of finite type are entropy-conjugate if they have the same entropy. We prove that two mixing shifts of finite type with equal entropy and left ideal class are entropy-conjugate. Consequently, in every entropy class Bowen's conjecture is true up to finite index.

Dimensional entropies and semi-uniform hyperbolicity

We describe dimensional entropies introduced in a previous work list some of their properties and give some new proofs. These entropies allowed the definition of entropy-expanding maps. We introduce a new notion of entropy-hyperbolicity for diffeomorphisms. We indicate some simple sufficient conditions (some of them new) for these properties. We conclude by some work in progress and more questions.

Entropic stability beyond partial hyperbolicity

We analyze a class of deformations of Anosov diffeomorphisms: these $C^0$-small, but $C^1$-macroscopic deformations break the topological conjugacy class but leave the high entropy dynamics unchanged. More precisely, there is a partial conjugacy between the deformation and the original Anosov system that identifies all invariant probability measures with entropy close to the maximum. We also establish expansiveness around those measures. This class of deformations contains many of the known nonhyperbolic robustly transitive diffeomorphisms. In particular, we show that it includes a class of nonpartially hyperbolic, robustly transitive diffeomorphisms described by Bonatti and Viana.
