Tamely Ramified Covers of the Projective Line with Alternating and Symmetric Monodromy

Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$ and let $X$ the projective line over $k$ with three points removed. We investigate which finite groups $G$ can arise as the monodromy group of finite étale covers of $X$ that are tamely ramified over the three removed points. This provides new information about the tame fundamental group of the projective line. In particular, we show that for each prime $p\ge 5$, there are families of tamely ramified covers with monodromy the symmetric group $S_n$ or alternating group $A_n$ for infinitely many $n$. These covers come from the moduli spaces of elliptic curves with $PSL_2(\mathbb{F}_\ell)$-structure, and the analysis uses work of Bourgain, Gamburd, and Sarnak, and adapts work of Meiri and Puder, about Markoff triples modulo $\ell$.

a-Numbers of Curves in Artin-Schreier Covers

Let $π: Y \to X$ be a branched $\mathbf{Z}/p \mathbf{Z}$-cover of smooth, projective, geometrically connected curves over a perfect field of characteristic $p>0$. We investigate the relationship between the $a$-numbers of $Y$ and $X$ and the ramification of the map $π$. This is analogous to the relationship between the genus (respectively $p$-rank) of $Y$ and $X$ given the Riemann-Hurwitz (respectively Deuring--Shafarevich) formula. Except in special situations, the $a$-number of $Y$ is not determined by the $a$-number of $X$ and the ramification of the cover, so we instead give bounds on the $a$-number of $Y$. We provide examples showing our bounds are sharp. The bounds come from a detailed analysis of the kernel of the Cartier operator.

Realizing Artin-Schreier covers of curves with minimal Newton polygons in positive characteristic

Suppose $X$ is a smooth projective connected curve defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ and $B \subset X(k)$ is a finite, possibly empty, set of points. The Newton polygon of a degree $p$ Galois cover of $X$ with branch locus $B$ depends on the ramification invariants of the cover. When $X$ is ordinary, for every possible set of branch points and ramification invariants, we prove that there exists such a cover whose Newton polygon is minimal or close to minimal.

G-Valued Galois Deformation Rings when $\ell \neq p$

For a smooth group scheme $G$ over an extension of $\mathbf{Z}_p$ such that the generic fiber of $G$ is reductive, we study the generic fiber of the Galois deformation ring for a $G$-valued mod $p$ representation of the absolute Galois group of a finite extension of $\mathbf{Q}_\ell$ with $\ell \neq p$. In particular, we show it admits a regular dense open locus, and that it is equidimensional of dimension $\dim G$.

Producing Geometric Deformations of Orthogonal and Symplectic Galois Representations

For a representation of the absolute Galois group of the rationals over a finite field of characteristic $p$, we study the existence of a lift to characteristic zero that is geometric in the sense of the Fontaine-Mazur conjecture. For two-dimensional representations, Ramakrishna proved that under technical assumptions odd representations admit geometric lifts. We generalize this to higher dimensional orthogonal and symplectic representations. A key step is generalizing and studying a local deformation condition at $p$ arising from Fontaine-Laffaille theory.
