All Order Merging of High Energy and Soft Collinear Resummation

We present a method of merging the exclusive LO-matched high energy resummation of High Energy Jets (HEJ) with the parton shower of Pythia which preserves the accuracy of the LO cross sections and the logarithmic accuracy of both resummation schemes across all of phase space. Predictions produced with this merging prescription are presented with comparisons to data from experimental studies and suggestions are made for further observables and experimental cuts which highlight the importance of both high energy and soft-collinear effects.

HEJ 2.1: High-energy Resummation with Vector Bosons and Next-to-Leading Logarithms

We present version 2.1 of the High Energy Jets (HEJ) event generator for hadron colliders. HEJ is a Monte Carlo generator for processes at high energies with multiple well-separated jets in the final state. To achieve accurate predictions, conventional fixed-order perturbative QCD is supplemented with an all-order resummation of large high-energy logarithms. The new version 2.1 now supports processes with final-state leptons originating from a charged or neutral vector boson together with multiple jets, in addition to processes available in earlier versions. Furthermore, the all-order resummation is extended to include an additional gauge-invariant class of subdominant logarithmic corrections. HEJ 2.1 can be obtained from https://hej.hepforge.org.

Logarithmic corrections to the QCD component of same-sign W-pair production for VBS studies

We present the results of the first calculation of the logarithmic corrections to the QCD contribution to same-sign $W$-pair production, $pp\to e^\pm ν_e μ^\pm ν_μjj$, for same-sign charged leptons. This includes all leading logarithmic contributions which scale as $α_W^4 α_s^{2+k}\log^k(\hat s/p_\perp^2)$. This process is important for the study of electroweak couplings and hence the QCD contributions are usually suppressed through a choice of Vector Boson Scattering (VBS) cuts. These select regions of phase space where logarithms in $\hat s/p_\perp^2$ are enhanced. While the logarithmic corrections lead to a small change for the cross sections, several distributions relevant for experimental studies are affected more significantly.

Unbiased Elimination of Negative Weights in Monte Carlo Samples

We propose a novel method for the elimination of negative Monte Carlo event weights. The method is process-agnostic, independent of any analysis, and preserves all physical observables. We demonstrate the overall performance and systematic improvement with increasing event sample size, based on predictions for the production of a W boson with two jets calculated at next-to-leading order perturbation theory.

Z/gamma* plus Multiple Hard Jets in High Energy Collisions

We present a description of the production of a di-lepton pair (through Z boson and virtual photon) in association with at least two jets. This calculation adds to the fixed-order accuracy the dominant logarithms in the limit of large partonic centre-of-mass energy to all orders in the strong coupling. This is achieved within the framework of High Energy Jets. This calculation is made possible by extending the high energy treatment to take into account the multiple t-channel exchanges arising from Z and gamma*-emissions off several quark lines. The correct description of the interference effects from the various t-channel exchanges requires an extension of the subtraction terms in the all-order calculation. We describe this construction and compare the resulting predictions to a number of recent analyses of LHC data. The description of a wide range of observables is good, and, as expected, stands out from other approaches in particular in the regions of large dijet invariant mass and large dijet rapidity spans.

Dark Sector spectroscopy at the ILC

Recent studies have shown that searches in the mono-photon and missing energy final state can be used to discover dark matter candidates at the ILC. While an excess in this final state over the Standard Model background would indicate the existence of a dark sector, no detailed information about the internal structure of this sector can be inferred. Here, we demonstrate how just a few observables can discriminate between various realizations of dark sectors, including e.g. the spin of mediators.

Polishing a shiny Higgs with matrix elements

After the recent discovery of a Standard Model Higgs boson-like particle at the LHC, the question of its couplings to known and unknown matter is eminent. In this letter, we present a method that allows for an enhancement in S/B(irreducible) of the order of 100% in $pp\to (h\to γγ) jj$ for a center of mass energy of 8 and 14 TeV. This is achieved by applying the matrix element method. We discuss the implications of detector resolution effects and various approximations of the involved event simulation and reconstruction. The matrix element method provides a reliable, stable, and efficient handle to separate signal from background, and the gluon and weak boson fusion components involved in this process. Employing this method, a more precise Higgs boson coupling extraction can be obtained, and our results are of immediate relevance for current searches.

Probing higher-order corrections in dijet production at the LHC

Both the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations have sought for effects beyond pure next-to-leading order in dijet observables, with the goal to distinguish between the perturbative descriptions provided by a next-to-leading order plus collinear-resummation calculation and by the resummation of wide-angle, hard emissions. In this paper we identify regions of phase space in dijet production where some observables receive large corrections beyond next-to-leading order and study their theoretical description with two tools that perform these two different resummations: the POWHEG BOX and HEJ. Furthermore, we suggest analyses where the predictions from POWHEG and HEJ can be clearly distinguished experimentally.

W Plus Multiple Jets at the LHC with High Energy Jets

We study the production of a W boson in association with n hard QCD jets (for n>=2), with a particular emphasis on results relevant for the Large Hadron Collider (7 TeV and 8 TeV). We present predictions for this process from High Energy Jets, a framework for all-order resummation of the dominant contributions from wide-angle QCD emissions. We first compare predictions against recent ATLAS data and then shift focus to observables and regions of phase space where effects beyond NLO are expected to be large.

A Parton Shower for High Energy Jets

We present a method to match the multi-parton states generated by the High Energy Jets Monte Carlo with parton showers generated by the Ariadne program using the colour dipole model. The High Energy Jets program already includes a full resummation of soft divergences. Hence, in the matching it is important that the corresponding divergences in the parton shower are subtracted, keeping only the collinear parts. We present a novel, shower-independent method for achieving this, enabling us to generate fully exclusive and hadronized events with multiple hard jets, in hadronic collisions. We discuss in detail the arising description of the soft, collinear and hard regions by examples in pure QCD jet-production.

Multiple Jets at the LHC with High Energy Jets

We present a flexible Monte Carlo implementation of the perturbative framework of High Energy Jets, describing multi-jet events at hadron colliders. The description includes a resummation which ensures leading logarithmic accuracy for large invariant mass between jets, and is matched to tree-level accuracy for multiplicities up to 4 jets. The resummation includes all-order hard corrections, which become important for increasing centre-of-mass energy of the hadronic collision. We discuss observables relevant for confronting the perturbative framework with 7 TeV data from the LHC, and the impact of the perturbative corrections on several dijet and trijet observables which are relevant in the search for new physics.

All-Order Corrections and Multi-Jet Rates

We discuss results from a recently proposed all-order description of hard, radiative corrections to certain multi-jet processes at hadron colliders. The description is based on obtaining an all-order estimate of the t-channel singularities of scattering amplitudes. As a simple example, we illustrate the similarities between qQ and qg-scattering. In particular, we discuss how at tree-level, all non-suppressed helicity-amplitudes for these processes consist of a pure t-channel pole. This structure is used in the construction of all-order approximations.

Azimuthal Angle Correlations for Higgs Boson plus Multi-Jet Events

At lowest order in perturbation theory, the scattering matrix element for Higgs boson production in association with dijets displays a strong correlation in the azimuthal angle between the dijets, induced by the CP-properties of the Higgs Boson coupling. However, the phase space cuts necessary for a clean extraction of the CP-properties simultaneously induce large corrections from emissions of hard radiation and thus formation of extra jets. The current study concerns the generalization of CP-studies using the azimuthal angle between dijets beyond tree-level and to events with more than just two jets. By analyzing the High Energy Limit of hard scattering matrix elements we arrive at a set of cuts optimized to enhance the correlation, while maintaining a large cross section, and an observable, which is very stable against higher order corrections. We contrast the description of Higgs boson production in association with jets at different levels: for tree-level hjj and hjjj matrix elements, for hjj matrix elements plus parton shower, and in a recent all-order framework, which converges to the full, all-order perturbative result in the limit of large invariant mass between all produced particles.

Constructing All-Order Corrections to Multi-Jet Rates

We discuss the universal behaviour of scattering cross sections in the limit of infinite rapidity separation between all produced particles, and illustrate the behaviour explicitly for the production of n jets, W+n jets, Z+n jets for n=2,3,4, and for H+2,3 jets. We give a set of rules for constructing scattering cross sections, which are exact in the given limit, and order-by-order reproduce well the full fixed order results when applied to LHC phenomenology. The approximation includes both real and virtual corrections, and is sufficiently simple to allow for the regulated all-order perturbative sum to be explicitly constructed. We test the expected accuracy by comparing results order-by-order with full fixed-order perturbation theory for the processes mentioned above.

CP-properties of the Higgs-boson couplings from H + dijets through gluon fusion

At lowest order in perturbation theory, the production of a Higgs boson in association with dijets displays a strong correlation in the azimuthal angle between the dijets, induced by the CP-properties of the Higgs Boson coupling. However, the phase space cuts necessary for a clean extraction of the CP-properties in the gluon fusion channel simultaneously induce large corrections from emissions of hard radiation and thus formation of additional jets. This contribution discusses how the CP-properties of the Higgs boson coupling can be cleanly extracted from events with more than two jets, based on a technique developed from insight into the high energy limit of hard scattering matrix elements.

High Energy Description of Processes with Multiple Hard Jets

High Energy Jets (HEJ) is a new framework for approximating the all-order perturbative corrections to multi-jet processes, with a focus on the hard, wide-angle QCD emissions, which underpins the perturbative description of hard jets. In this contribution we review the basic concepts of HEJ, and present some new predictions for observables in dijet-production, and for W-boson production in association with at least 3 jets.

High energy scattering in gravity and supergravity

We investigate features of perturbative gravity and supergravity by studying scattering in the ultraplanckian limit, and sharpen arguments that the dynamics is governed by long-distance physics. A simple example capturing aspects of the eikonal resummation suggests why short distance phenomena and in particular divergences or nonrenormalizability do not necessarily play a central role in this regime. A more profound problem is apparently unitarity. These considerations can be illustrated by showing that known gravity and supergravity amplitudes have the same long-distance behavior, despite the extra light states of supergravity, and this serves as an important check on long-range dynamics in a context where perturbative amplitudes are finite. We also argue that these considerations have other important implications: they obstruct probing the conjectured phenomenon of asymptotic safety through a physical scattering process, and ultraplanckian scattering exhibiting Regge behavior. These arguments sharpen the need to find a nonperturbative completion of gravity with mechanisms which restore unitarity in the strong gravity regime.

The Factorisation of the t-channel Pole in Quark-Gluon Scattering

By exploring the scattering of specific helicity states in quark-gluon scattering at tree level we show explicitly that the t-channel pole can be described exactly as a contraction of two local currents. Furthermore, we demonstrate that out of eight non-zero helicity possibilities, only two suppressed channels have contributions that are not pure, factorised t-channel poles. We thereby extract a gauge-invariant definition for the t-channel current generated by the scattering of a gluon. This offers a slight improvement in the description of gluon scattering in the framework of arXiv:0908.2786 for the prediction of n-jet rates at hadron colliders.

Radiative B decay spectrum: DGE at NNLO

We compute the differential B -> X_s gamma decay width in the Standard Model as a function of the photon energy using Dressed Gluon Exponentiation (DGE). The resummed spectrum is matched with the fixed-order expansion, making use of the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) results for the matrix element of the magnetic dipole interaction O_7 and NLO ones for other operators in the effective Weak Hamiltonian. We develop a new technique to implement constraints on the analytic structure of the Sudakov factor in moment space. This improves the behavior of the resummed spectrum away from the Sudakov region. We also derive an analytic expression for the Borel transform of the perturbative series for the O_7 spectrum in the large-beta_0 limit. Using this example we demonstrate that exponentiation in moment space is necessary for the calculation of the spectrum for E_gamma > 2 GeV. Finally, we investigate numerically the relation between renormalons, power corrections and support properties. We present predictions for the branching fraction and the first few spectral moments as a function of a cut E_gamma>E_0 and estimate the theoretical uncertainty.

Inclusive spectra in charmless semileptonic B decays by Dressed Gluon Exponentiation

The triple differential spectrum in \bar{B} -> X_u l \barν is computed by Dressed Gluon Exponentiation (DGE). In this framework the on-shell calculation, converted into hadronic variables, can be directly used as an approximation to the meson decay spectrum, without involving a leading-power non-perturbative function. Sudakov resummation for the fully differential \bar{B} -> X_u l \barν width is formulated in moment space, where moments are defined using the ratio between the lightcone momentum components of the partonic jet p^+/p^- and the hard scale is p^-. In these variables the correspondence with the \bar{B} -> X_s γcase is transparent. The Sudakov exponent is known to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. Further constraints are put on its Borel sum using the cancellation of the leading renormalon ambiguity and the absence of the next-to-leading one, which was proven in the large-beta_0 limit and assumed here to be general. Based on the resummed spectrum, matched to the fully differential NLO result, we calculate the event fraction associated with experimental cuts on the hadronic mass (or the small lightcone component) as well as on the lepton energy. Finally, we extract |V_ub| from recent measurements by Belle and analyze the theoretical uncertainty.

The Gluon Green's Function in the BFKL Approach at Next-to-Leading Logarithmic Accuracy

We investigate the gluon Green's function in the high energy limit of QCD using a recently proposed iterative solution of the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) equation at next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy. To establish the applicability of this method in the NLL approximation we solve the BFKL equation as originally written by Fadin and Lipatov, and compare the results with previous studies in the leading logarithmic (LL) approximation.
