Lattices over Polynomial Rings and Applications to Function Fields

This paper deals with lattices $(L,\Vert~\Vert)$ over polynomial rings, where $L$ is a finitely generated module over $k[t]$, the polynomial ring over the field $k$ in the indeterminate $t$, and $\Vert~\Vert$ is a discrete real-valued length function on $L\otimes_{k[t]}k(t)$. A reduced basis of $(L,\Vert~\Vert)$ is a basis of $L$ whose vectors attain the successive minima of $(L,\Vert~\Vert)$. We develop an algorithm which transforms any basis of $L$ into a reduced basis of $(L,\Vert~\Vert)$. By identifying a divisor $D$ of an algebraic function field with a lattice $(L,\Vert~\Vert)$ over a polynomial ring, this reduction algorithm can be addressed to the computation of the Riemann-Roch space of $D$ and the successive minima of $(L,\Vert~\Vert)$, without the use of any series expansion.

Computation of Integral Bases

Let $A$ be a Dedekind domain, $K$ the fraction field of $A$, and $f\in A[x]$ a monic irreducible separable polynomial. For a given non-zero prime ideal $\mathfrak{p}$ of $A$ we present in this paper a new method to compute a $\mathfrak{p}$-integral basis of the extension of $K$ determined by $f$. Our method is based on the use of simple multipliers that can be constructed with the data that occurs along the flow of the Montes Algorithm. Our construction of a $\mathfrak{p}$-integral basis is significantly faster than the similar approach from $[7]$ and provides in many cases a priori a triangular basis.

Complexity of OM factorizations of polynomials over local fields

Let $k$ be a locally compact complete field with respect to a discrete valuation $v$. Let $\oo$ be the valuation ring, $\m$ the maximal ideal and $F(x)\in\oo[x]$ a monic separable polynomial of degree $n$. Let $δ=v(\dsc(F))$. The Montes algorithm computes an OM factorization of $F$. The single-factor lifting algorithm derives from this data a factorization of $F \md{\m^ν}$, for a prescribed precision $ν$. In this paper we find a new estimate for the complexity of the Montes algorithm, leading to an estimation of $O(n^{2+ε}+n^{1+ε}δ^{2+ε}+n^2ν^{1+ε})$ word operations for the complexity of the computation of a factorization of $F \md{\m^ν}$, assuming that the residue field of $k$ is small.

Genus computation of global function fields

In this paper we present an algorithm that computes the genus of a global function field. Let F/k be function field over a field k, and let k0 be the full constant field of F/k. By using lattices over subrings of F, we can express the genus g of F in terms of [k0 : k] and the indices of certain orders of the finite and infinite maximal orders of F . If k is a finite field, the Montes algorithm computes the latter indices as a by-product. This leads us to a fast computation of the genus of global function fields. Our algorithm does not require the computation of any basis, neither of finite nor infinite maximal order.
