Sharp Effective Finite-Field Nullstellensatz

The (weak) Nullstellensatz over finite fields says that if $P_1,\ldots,P_m$ are $n$-variate degree-$d$ polynomials with no common zero over a finite field $\mathbb{F}$ then there are polynomials $R_1,\ldots,R_m$ such that $R_1P_1+\cdots+R_mP_m \equiv 1$. Green and Tao [Contrib. Discrete Math. 2009, Proposition 9.1] used a regularity lemma to obtain an effective proof, showing that the degrees of the polynomials $R_i$ can be bounded independently of $n$, though with an Ackermann-type dependence on the other parameters $m$, $d$, and $|\mathbb{F}|$. In this paper we use the polynomial method to give a proof with a degree bound of $md(|\mathbb{F}|-1)$. We also show that the dependence on each of the parameters is the best possible up to an absolute constant. We further include a generalization, offered by Pete L. Clark, from finite fields to arbitrary subsets in arbitrary fields, provided the polynomials $P_i$ take finitely many values on said subset.

Filtering cohomology of ordinary and Lagrangian Grassmannians

This paper studies, for a positive integer $m$, the subalgebra of the cohomology ring of the complex Grassmannians generated by the elements of degree at most $m$. We build in two ways upon a conjecture for the Hilbert series of this subalgebra due to Reiner and Tudose. The first reinterprets it in terms of the operation of $k$-conjugation, suggesting two conjectural bases for the subalgebras that would imply their conjecture. The second introduces an analogous conjecture for the cohomology of Lagrangian Grassmannians.

Quantum advantage for noisy channel discrimination

Many quantum mechanical experiments can be viewed as multi-round interactive protocols between known quantum circuits and an unknown quantum process. Fully quantum "coherent" access to the unknown process is known to provide an advantage in many discrimination tasks compared to when only incoherent access is permitted, but it is unclear if this advantage persists when the process is noisy. Here, we show that a quantum advantage can be maintained when distinguishing between two noisy single qubit rotation channels. Numerical and analytical calculations reveal a distinct transition between optimal performance by fully coherent and fully incoherent protocols as a function of noise strength. Moreover, the size of the region of coherent quantum advantage shrinks inverse polynomially in the number of channel uses, and in an intermediate regime an improved strategy is a hybrid of fully-coherent and fully-incoherent subroutines. The fully coherent protocol is based on quantum signal processing, suggesting a generalizable algorithmic framework for the study of quantum advantage in the presence of realistic noise.
