Computing isomorphisms and embeddings of finite fields

Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field. Given two irreducible polynomials $f,g$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$, with $\mathrm{deg} f$ dividing $\mathrm{deg} g$, the finite field embedding problem asks to compute an explicit description of a field embedding of $\mathbb{F}_q[X]/f(X)$ into $\mathbb{F}_q[Y]/g(Y)$. When $\mathrm{deg} f = \mathrm{deg} g$, this is also known as the isomorphism problem. This problem, a special instance of polynomial factorization, plays a central role in computer algebra software. We review previous algorithms, due to Lenstra, Allombert, Rains, and Narayanan, and propose improvements and generalizations. Our detailed complexity analysis shows that our newly proposed variants are at least as efficient as previously known algorithms, and in many cases significantly better. We also implement most of the presented algorithms, compare them with the state of the art computer algebra software, and make the code available as open source. Our experiments show that our new variants consistently outperform available software.

A conjecture about Gauss sums and bentness of binomial Boolean functions

In this note, the polar decomposition of binary fields of even extension degree is used to reduce the evaluation of the Walsh transform of binomial Boolean functions to that of Gauss sums. In the case of extensions of degree four times an odd number, an explicit formula involving a Kloosterman sum is conjectured, proved with further restrictions, and supported by extensive experimental data in the general case. In particular, the validity of this formula is shown to be equivalent to a simple and efficient characterization for bentness previously conjectured by Mesnager.

Non-Malleable Codes from the Wire-Tap Channel

Recently, Dziembowski et al. introduced the notion of non-malleable codes (NMC), inspired from the notion of non-malleability in cryptography and the work of Gennaro et al. in 2004 on tamper proof security. Informally, when using NMC, if an attacker modifies a codeword, decoding this modified codeword will return either the original message or a completely unrelated value. The definition of NMC is related to a family of modifications authorized to the attacker. In their paper, Dziembowski et al. propose a construction valid for the family of all bit-wise independent functions. In this article, we study the link between the second version of the Wire-Tap (WT) Channel, introduced by Ozarow and Wyner in 1984, and NMC. Using coset-coding, we describe a new construction for NMC w.r.t. a subset of the family of bit-wise independent functions. Our scheme is easier to build and more efficient than the one proposed by Dziembowski et al.
