On the CLT for rotations and BV functions

Let $x \mapsto x+ α$ be a rotation on the circle and let $φ$ be a step function. We denote by $φ\_n (x)$ the corresponding ergodic sums $\sum\_{j=0}^{n-1} φ(x+j α)$. Under an assumption on $α$, for example when $α$ has bounded partial quotients, and a Diophantine condition on the discontinuity points of $φ$, we show that $φ\_n/\|φ\_n\|\_2$ is asymptotically Gaussian for $n$ in a set of density 1. The method is based on decorrelation inequalities for the ergodic sums taken at times $q\_k$, where the $q\_k$'s are the denominators of $α$.

Almost mixing of all orders and CLT for some $\mathbb{Z}^d$-actions on subgroups of $\mathbb{F}\_p^{\mathbb{Z}^d}$

For N d-actions by algebraic endomorphisms on compact abelian groups, the existence of non-mixing configurations is related to "S-unit type" equations and plays a role in limit theorems for such actions. We consider a family of endomorphisms on shift-invariant subgroups of F Z d p and show that there are few solutions of the corresponding equations. This implies the validity of the Central Limit Theorem for different methods of summation.

Correlation of sequences and of measures, generic points for joinings and ergodicity of certain cocycles

The main subject of the paper, motivated by a question raised by Boshernitzan, is to give criteria for a bounded complex-valued sequence to be uncorrelated to any strictly ergodic sequence. As a tool developed to study this problem we introduce the notion of correlation between two shift-invariant measures supported by the symbolic space with complex symbols. We also prove a "lifting lemma" for generic points: given a joining $ξ$ of two shift-invariant measures $μ$ and $ν$, every point $x$ generic for $μ$ lifts to a pair $(x,y)$ generic for $ξ$ (such $y$ exists in the full symbolic space). This lemma allows us to translate correlation between bounded sequences to the language of correlation of measures. Finally, to establish that the property of an invariant measure being uncorrelated to any ergodic measure is essentially weaker than the property of being disjoint from any ergodic measure, we develop and apply criteria for ergodicity of four-jump cocycles over irrational rotations. We believe that apart from the applications to studying the notion of correlation, the two developed tools: the lifting lemma and the criteria for ergodicity of four-jump cocycles, are of independent interest. This is why we announce them also in the title. In the Appendix we also introduce the notion of conditional disjointness.

CLT for random walks of commuting endomorphisms on compact abelian groups

Let $\Cal S$ be an abelian group of automorphisms of a probability space $(X, {\Cal A}, μ)$ with a finite system of generators $(A_1, ..., A_d)$. Let $A^{\el}$ denote $A_1^{\ell_1} ... A_d^{\ell_d}$, for ${\el}= (\ell_1, ..., \ell_d)$. If $(Z_k)$ is a random walk on $\Z^d$, one can study the asymptotic distribution of the sums $\sum_{k=0}^{n-1} \, f \circ A^{\,{Z_k(ω)}}$ and $\sum_{\el \in \Z^d} \PP(Z_n= \el) \, A^\el f$, for a function $f$ on $X$. In particular, given a random walk on commuting matrices in $SL(ρ, \Z)$ or in ${\Cal M}^*(ρ, \Z)$ acting on the torus $\T^ρ$, $ρ\geq 1$, what is the asymptotic distribution of the associated ergodic sums along the random walk for a smooth function on $\T^ρ$ after normalization? In this paper, we prove a central limit theorem when $X$ is a compact abelian connected group $G$ endowed with its Haar measure (e.g. a torus or a connected extension of a torus), $\Cal S$ a totally ergodic $d$-dimensional group of commuting algebraic automorphisms of $G$ and $f$ a regular function on $G$. The proof is based on the cumulant method and on preliminary results on the spectral properties of the action of $\Cal S$, on random walks and on the variance of the associated ergodic sums.

Limit directions of a vector cocycle, remarks and examples

We study the set ${\cal D}(Φ)$ of limit directions of a vector cocycle $(Φ_n)$ over a dynamical system, i.e., the set of limit values of $Φ_n(x) /\|Φ_n(x)\|$ along subsequences such that $\|Φ_n(x)\|$ tends to $\infty$. This notion is natural in geometrical models of dynamical systems where the phase space is fibred over a basis with fibers isomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^d$, like systems associated to the billiard in the plane with periodic obstacles. It has a meaning for transient or recurrent cocycles. Our aim is to present some results in a general context as well as for specific models for which the set of limit directions can be described. In particular we study the related question of sojourn in cones of the cocycle when the invariance principle is satisfied.

Central limit theorem for commutative semigroups of toral endomorphisms

Let $\Cal S$ be an abelian finitely generated semigroup of endomorphisms of a probability space $(Ω, {\Cal A}, μ)$, with $(T_1, ..., T_d)$ a system of generators in ${\Cal S}$. Given an increasing sequence of domains $(D_n) \subset \N^d$, a question is the convergence in distribution of the normalized sequence $|D_n|^{-\frac12} \sum_{{\k} \, \in D_n} \, f \circ T^{\,{\k}}$, for $f \in L^2_0(μ)$, where $T^{\k}= T_1^{k_1} ... T_d^{k_d}$, ${\k}= (k_1, ..., k_d) \in {\N}^d$. After a preliminary spectral study when the action of $\Cal S$ has a Lebesgue spectrum, we consider $\N^d$- or $\Z^d$-actions given by commuting toral automorphisms or endomorphisms on $\T^ρ$, $ρ\geq 1$. For a totally ergodic action by automorphisms, we show a CLT for the above normalized sequence or other summation methods like barycenters, as well as a criterion of non-degeneracy of the variance, when $f$ is regular on the torus. A CLT is also proved for some semigroups of endomorphisms. Classical results on the existence and the construction of such actions by automorphisms are recalled.

On multiple ergodicity of affine cocycles over irrational rotations

Let T_αdenote the rotation T_αx=x+α(mod 1) by an irrational number αon the additive circle T=[0,1). Let β_1,..., β_d be d\geqslant 1 parameters in [0, 1). One of the goals of this paper is to describe the ergodic properties of the cocycle (taking values in R^(d+1)) generated over T_αby the vectorial function Ψ_{d+1}(x):=(ϕ(x), ϕ(x+β_1),..., ϕ(x+β_d)), with ϕ(x)={x}-1/2. It was already proved in \cite{LeMeNa03} that Ψ_{2} is regular for αwith bounded partial quotients. In the present paper we show that Ψ_{2} is regular for any irrational α. For higher dimensions, we give sufficient conditions for regularity. While the case d=2 remains unsolved, for d=3 we provide examples of non-regular cocycles Ψ_{4} for certain values of the parameters β_1,β_2,β_3. We also show that the problem of regularity for the cocycle Ψ_{d+1} reduces to the regularity of the cocycles of the form Φ_{d} =(1_{[0, β_j]} - β_j)_{j= 1, ..., d} (taking values in R^d). Therefore, a large part of the paper is devoted to the classification problems of step functions with values in R^{d}.

Remarks on step cocycles over rotations, centralizers and coboundaries

By using a cocycle generated by the step function $φ_{β, γ} = 1_{[0, β]} - 1_{[0, β]} (. + γ)$ over an irrational rotation $x \to x + α\mod 1$, we present examples which illustrate different aspects of the general theory of cylinder maps. In particular, we construct non ergodic cocycles with ergodic compact quotients, cocycles generating an extension $T_{α, φ}$ with a small centralizer. The constructions are related to diophantine properties of $α, β, γ$.

Ergodicity of group actions and spectral gap, applications to random walks and Markov shifts

Let $(X, \cal B, ν)$ be a probability space and let $Γ$ be a countable group of $ν$-preserving invertible maps of $X$ into itself. To a probability measure $μ$ on $Γ$ corresponds a random walk on $X$ with Markov operator $P$ given by $Pψ(x) = \sum_{a} ψ(ax) \, μ(a)$. A powerful tool is the spectral gap property for the operator $P$ when it holds. We consider various examples of ergodic $Γ$-actions and random walks and their extensions by a vector space: groups of automorphisms or affine transformations on compact nilmanifolds, random walk in random scenery on non amenable groups, translations on homogeneous spaces of simple Lie groups, random walks on motion groups. The spectral gap property is applied to obtain limit theorems, recurrence/transience property and ergodicity for random walks on non compact extensions of the corresponding dynamical systems.

Central limit theorem for products of toral automorphisms

Let $(τ_n)$ be a sequence of toral automorphisms $τ_n : x \rightarrow A_n x \hbox{mod}\ZZ^d$ with $A_n \in {\cal A}$, where ${\cal A}$ is a finite set of matrices in $SL(d, \mathbb{Z})$. Under some conditions the method of "multiplicative systems" of Komlòs can be used to prove a Central Limit Theorem for the sums $\sum_{k=1}^n f(τ_k \circ τ_{k-1} \cdots \circ τ_1 x)$ if $f$ is a Hölder function on $\mathbb{T}^d$. These conditions hold for $2\times 2$ matrices with positive coefficients. In dimension $d$ they can be applied when $A_n= A_n(ω)$, with independent choices of $A_n(ω)$ in a finite set of matrices $\in SL(d, \mathbb{Z})$, in order to prove a "quenched" CLT.

Cocycles over interval exchange transformations and multivalued Hamiltonian flows

We consider interval exchange transformations of periodic type and construct different classes of recurrent ergodic cocycles of dimension $\geq 1$ over this special class of IETs. Then using Poincaré sections we apply this construction to obtain recurrence and ergodicity for some smooth flows on non-compact manifolds which are extensions of multivalued Hamiltonian flows on compact surfaces.

On recurrence and ergodicity for geodesic flows on noncompact periodic polygonal surfaces

We study the recurrence and ergodicity for the billiard on noncompact polygonal surfaces with a free, cocompact action of $\Z$ or $\Z^2$. In the $\Z$-periodic case, we establish criteria for recurrence. In the more difficult $\Z^2$-periodic case, we establish some general results. For a particular family of $\Z^2$-periodic polygonal surfaces, known in the physics literature as the wind-tree model, assuming certain restrictions of geometric nature, we obtain the ergodic decomposition of directional billiard dynamics for a dense, countable set of directions. This is a consequence of our results on the ergodicity of $\ZZ$-valued cocycles over irrational rotations.
