Eigenvector-based acceleration strategies for gradient-type methods

Several strategies are described and analyzed to speed-up gradient-type methods when applied to the minimization of strictly convex quadratics and strictly convex functions. The proposed techniques focus on relaxing the traditional optimal step length associated with gradient methods, including the steepest descent (SD) and the minimal residual (MR) methods. Such a relaxation avoids the well-known negative zigzag effect and allows the iterates to move in the entire space which in turn implies that every so often the search direction approaches some eigenvector of the underlying Hessian matrix. The proposed speedups then rely on taking advantage of the properties of the Lanczos method once a search direction that approaches an eigenvector has been identified in order to accelerate the convergence towards the global minimizer. After analyzing the proposed strategies, we illustrate them on the global minimization of strictly convex functions.

On time relaxed schemes and formulations for dispersive wave equations

The numerical simulation of nonlinear dispersive waves is a central research topic of many investigations in the nonlinear wave community. Simple and robust solvers are needed for numerical studies of water waves as well. The main difficulties arise in the numerical approximation of high order derivatives and in severe stability restrictions on the time step, when explicit schemes are used. In this study we propose new relaxed system formulations which approximate the initial dispersive wave equation. However, the resulting relaxed system involves first order derivatives only and it is written in the form of an evolution problem. Thus, many standard methods can be applied to solve the relaxed problem numerically. In this article we illustrate the application of the new relaxed scheme on the classical Korteweg-de Vries equation as a prototype of stiff dispersive PDEs.

Geometrical inverse preconditioning for symmetric positive definite matrices

We focus on inverse preconditioners based on minimizing $F(X) = 1-\cos(XA,I)$, where $XA$ is the preconditioned matrix and $A$ is symmetric and positive definite. We present and analyze gradient-type methods to minimize $F(X)$ on a suitable compact set. For that we use the geometrical properties of the non-polyhedral cone of symmetric and positive definite matrices, and also the special properties of $F(X)$ on the feasible set. Preliminary and encouraging numerical results are also presented in which dense and sparse approximations are included.

Parallel Matrix Function Evaluation via Initial value ODE modelling

The purpose of this article is to propose ODE based approaches for the numerical evaluation of matrix functions $f(A)$, a question of major interest in the numerical linear algebra. To this end, we model $f(A)$ as the solution at a finite time $T$ of a time dependent equation. We use parallel algorithms, such as the parareal method, on the time interval $[0, T]$ in order to solve the evolution equation obtained. When $f(A)$ is reached as a stable steady state, it can be computed by combining parareal algorithms and optimal control techniques. Numerical illustrations are given.

A simple mathematical approach to optimize the structure of reaction-diffusion physicochemical systems

The calculation of optimal structures in reaction-diffusion models is of great importance in many physicochemical systems. We propose here a simple method to monitor the number of interphases for long times by using a boundary flux condition as a control. We consider as an illustration a 1-D Allen-Cahn equation with Neumann boundary conditions. Numerical examples are given and perspectives for the application of this approach to electrochemical systems are discussed.

Long-time behavior of solutions of a BBM equation with generalized damping

We study the long-time behavior of the solution of a damped BBM equation $u_t + u_x - u_{xxt} + uu_x + \mathscr{L}_γ(u) = 0$. The proposed dampings $\mathscr{L}_γ$ generalize standards ones, as parabolic ($\mathscr{L}_γ(u)=-Δu$) or weak damping ($\mathscr{L}_γ(u)=γu$) and allows us to consider a greater range. After establish the local well-posedness in the energy space, we investigate some numerical properties.
