Optimal Actuation of Flagellar Magnetic Micro-Swimmers

We present an automated procedure for the design of optimal actuation for flagellar magnetic microswimmers based on numerical optimization. Using this method, a new magnetic actuation method is provided which allows these devices to swim significantly faster compared to the usual sinusoidal actuation. This leads to a novel swimming strategy which makes the swimmer perform a 3D figure-8 trajectory. This shows that a faster propulsion is obtained when the swimmer is allowed to go out-of-plane. This approach is experimentally validated on a scaled-up flexible swimmer.

Controllability of a bent 3-link magnetic microswimmer

- In this paper, we focus on a variant of a 3-link magnetic microswimmer which consists of three rigid magnetized segments connected by two torsional springs. In particular, we assume that one of the springs is twisted so that the swimmer is not aligned at rest. By acting on it with an external magnetic field, the swimmer twists and moves through the surrounding fluid. By considering the external magnetic field as a control function, we state a local partial controllability result around the equilibrium states. Then, we propose a constructive method to find the magnetic field that allows the swimmer to move along a prescribed trajectory. Finally, we show numerical simulations in which the swimmer moves along a prescribed path.

Time Versus Energy in the Averaged Optimal Coplanar Kepler Transfer towards Circular Orbits

The aim of this note is to compare the averaged optimal coplanar transfer towards circular orbits when the costs are the transfer time transfer and the energy consumption. While the energy case leads to analyze a 2D Riemannian metric using the standard tools of Riemannian geometry (curvature computations, geodesic convexity), the time minimal case is associated to a Finsler metric which is not smooth. Nevertheless a qualitative analysis of the geodesic flow is given in this article to describe the optimal transfers. In particular we prove geodesic convexity of the elliptic domain.

The averaged control system of fast oscillating control systems

For control systems that either have a fast explicit periodic dependence on time and bounded controls or have periodic solutions and small controls, we define an average control system that takes into account all possible variations of the control, and prove that its solutions approximate all solutions of the oscillating system as oscillations go faster. The dimension of its velocity set is characterized geometrically. When it is maximum the average system defines a Finsler metric, not twice differentiable in general. For minimum time control, this average system allows one to give a rigorous proof that averaging the Hamiltonian given by the maximum principle is a valid approximation.

Mass transportation with LQ cost functions

We study the optimal transport problem in the Euclidean space where the cost function is given by the value function associated with a Linear Quadratic minimization problem. Under appropriate assumptions, we generalize Brenier's Theorem proving existence and uniqueness of an optimal transport map. In the controllable case, we show that the optimal transport map has to be the gradient of a convex function up to a linear change of coordinates. We give regularity results and also investigate the non-controllable case.

On local linearization of control systems

We consider the problem of topological linearization of smooth (C infinity or real analytic) control systems, i.e. of their local equivalence to a linear controllable system via point-wise transformations on the state and the control (static feedback transformations) that are topological but not necessarily differentiable. We prove that local topological linearization implies local smooth linearization, at generic points. At arbitrary points, it implies local conjugation to a linear system via a homeomorphism that induces a smooth diffeomorphism on the state variables, and, except at "strongly" singular points, this homeomorphism can be chosen to be a smooth mapping (the inverse map needs not be smooth). Deciding whether the same is true at "strongly" singular points is tantamount to solve an intriguing open question in differential topology.

A necessary condition for dynamic equivalence

If two control systems on manifolds of the same dimension are dynamic equivalent, we prove that either they are static equivalent --i.e. equivalent via a classical diffeomorphism-- or they are both ruled; for systems of different dimensions, the one of higher dimension must ruled. A ruled system is one whose equations define at each point in the state manifold, a ruled submanifold of the tangent space. Dynamic equivalence is also known as equivalence by endogenous dynamic feedback, or by a Lie-Bäcklund transformation when control systems are viewed as underdetermined systems of ordinary differential equations; it is very close to absolute equivalence for Pfaffian systems. It was already known that a differentially flat system must be ruled; this is a particular case of the present result, in which one of the systems is assumed to be "trivial" (or linear controllable).

Flatness and Monge parameterization of two-input systems, control-affine with 4 states or general with 3 states

This paper studies Monge parameterization, or differential flatness, of control-affine systems with four states and twocontrols. Some of them are known to be flat, and this implies admitting a Monge parameterization. Focusing on systems outside this class, we describe the only possible structure of such a parameterization for these systems, and give a lower bound on the order of this parameterization, if it exists. This lower-bound is good enough to recover the known results about "(x,u)-flatness" of these systems, with much more elementary techniques.
