Wilsonian approach to the interaction $ϕ^2(iϕ)^\varepsilon$

We study the renormalisation of the non-Hermitian $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric scalar field theory with the interaction $ϕ^2(iϕ)^\varepsilon$ using the Wilsonian approach and without any expansion in $\varepsilon$. Specifically, we solve the Wetterich equation in the local potential approximation, both in the ultraviolet regime and with the loop expansion. We calculate the scale-dependent effective potential and its infrared limit. The theory is found to be renormalisable at the one-loop level only for integer values of $\varepsilon$, a result which is not yet established within the $\varepsilon$-expansion. Particular attention is therefore paid to the two interesting cases $\varepsilon=1,2$, and the one-loop beta functions for the coupling associated with the interaction $iϕ^3$ and $-ϕ^4$ are computed. It is found that the $-ϕ^4$ theory has asymptotic freedom in four-dimensional spacetime. Some general properties for the Euclidean partition function and $n$-point functions are also derived.

Discrete spacetime symmetries, second quantization, and inner products in a non-Hermitian Dirac fermionic field theory

We extend to a non-Hermitian fermionic quantum field theory with PT symmetry our previous discussion of second quantization, discrete symmetry transformations, and inner products in a scalar field theory [arXiv:2006.06656]. For illustration, we consider a prototype model containing a single Dirac fermion with a parity-odd, anti-Hermitian mass term. In the phase of unbroken PT symmetry, this Dirac fermion model is equivalent to a Hermitian theory under a similarity transformation, with the non-Hermitian nature of the model residing only in the spinor structure, whereas the algebra of the creation and annihilation operators is just that of a Hermitian theory.

One-loop tunnelling-induced energetics

Tunnelling between degenerate vacuua is allowed in finite-volume Quantum Field Theory, and features remarkable energetic properties, which result from the competition of different dominant configurations in the partition function. We derive the one-loop effective potential based on two homogeneous vacuua of the bare theory, and we discuss the resulting Null Energy Condition violation in O(4)-symmetric Euclidean spacetime, as a result of a non-extensive effective action.

Discrete spacetime symmetries and particle mixing in non-Hermitian scalar quantum field theories

We discuss second quantization, discrete symmetry transformations and inner products in free non-Hermitian scalar quantum field theories with PT symmetry, focusing on a prototype model of two complex scalar fields with anti-Hermitian mass mixing. Whereas the definition of the inner product is unique for theories described by Hermitian Hamiltonians, its formulation is not unique for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. Energy eigenstates are not orthogonal with respect to the conventional Dirac inner product, so we must consider additional discrete transformations to define a positive-definite norm. We clarify the relationship between canonical-conjugate operators and introduce the additional discrete symmetry C', previously introduced for quantum-mechanical systems, and show that the C'PT inner product does yield a positive-definite norm, and hence is appropriate for defining the Fock space in non-Hermitian models with PT symmetry in terms of energy eigenstates. We also discuss similarity transformations between PT-symmetric non-Hermitian scalar quantum field theories and Hermitian theories, showing that they would require modification in the presence of interactions. As an illustration of our discussion, we compare particle mixing in a Hermitian theory and in the corresponding non-Hermitian model with PT symmetry, showing how the latter maintains unitarity and exhibits mixing between scalar and pseudoscalar bosons.

On the consistency of a non-Hermitian Yukawa interaction

We study different properties of an anti-Hermitian Yukawa interaction, motivated by a scenario of radiative anomalous generation of masses for the right-handed sterile neutrinos. The model, involving either a pseudo-scalar or a scalar, is consistent both at the classical and quantum levels, and particular attention is given to its properties under improper Lorentz transformations. The path integral is consistently defined with a Euclidean signature, and we discuss the energetics of the model, which show that no dynamical mass generation can occur, unless extra interactions are considered.

PT-Symmetric Non-Hermitian Quantum Field Theories with Supersymmetry

We formulate supersymmetric non-Hermitian quantum field theories with PT symmetry, starting with free chiral boson/fermion models and then including trilinear superpotential interactions. We consider models with both Dirac and Majorana fermions, analyzing them in terms of superfields and at the component level. We also discuss the relation between the equations of motion, the (non-)invariance of the Lagrangian and the (non-)conservation of the supercurrents in the two models. We exhibit a similarity transformation that maps the free-field supersymmetric PT-symmetric Dirac model to a supersymmetric Hermitian theory, but there is, in general, no corresponding similarity transformation for the Majorana model. In this model, we find generically a mass splitting between bosons and fermions, even though its construction is explicitly supersymmetric, offering a novel non-Hermitian mechanism for soft supersymmetry breaking.

Spontaneously Breaking Non-Abelian Gauge Symmetry in Non-Hermitian Field Theories

We generalise our previous formulation of gauge-invariant PT-symmetric field theories to include models with non-Abelian symmetries and discuss the extension to such models of the Englert-Brout-Higgs-Kibble mechanism for generating masses for vector bosons. As in the Abelian case, the non-Abelian gauge fields are coupled to non-conserved currents. We present a consistent scheme for gauge fixing, demonstrating Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin invariance, and show that the particle spectrum and interactions are gauge invariant. We exhibit the masses that gauge bosons in the simplest two-doublet SU(2)xU(1) model acquire when certain scalar fields develop vacuum expectation values: they and scalar masses depend quartically on the non-Hermitian mass parameter mu. The bosonic mass spectrum differs substantially from that in a Hermitian two-doublet model. This non-Hermitian extension of the Standard Model opens a new direction for particle model building, with distinctive predictions to be explored further.

Convexity at finite temperature and non-extensive thermodynamics

Assuming that tunnel effect between two degenerate bare minima occurs, in a scalar field theory at finite volume, this article studies the consequences for the effective potential, to all loop orders. Convexity is achieved only if the two bare minima are taken into account in the path integral, and a new derivation of the effective potential is given, in the large volume limit. The effective potential has then has a universal form, it is suppressed by the space time volume, and does not feature spontaneous symmetry breaking as long as the volume is finite. The finite temperature analysis leads to surprising thermal properties, following from the non-extensive expression for the free energy. Although the physical relevance of these results is not clear, the potential application to ultra-light scalar particles is discussed.

Dynamical mechanism for ultra-light scalar Dark Matter

Assuming a double-well bare potential for a self-interacting scalar field, with the Higgs vacuum expectation value, it is shown that non-perturbative quantum corrections naturally lead to ultra-light particles of mass $\simeq10^{-23}$eV, if these non-perturbative effects occur at a time consistent with the Electroweak phase transition. This mechanism could be relevant in the context of Bose Einstein Condensate studies for the description of cold Dark Matter. Given the numerical consistency with the Electroweak transition, an interaction potential for Higgs and Dark Matter fields is proposed, where spontaneous symmetry breaking for the Higgs field leads to the generation of ultra-light particles, in addition to the usual Higgs mechanism. This model also naturally leads to extremely weak interactions between the Higgs and Dark Matter particles.

Effective matter dispersion relation in quantum covariant Horava-Lifshitz gravity

We study how quantum fluctuations of the metric in covariant Horava-Lifshitz gravity influence the propagation of classical fields (complex scalar and photon). The effective Lorentz-symmetry violation induced by the breaking of 4-dimensional diffeomorphism is then evaluated, by comparing the dressed dispersion relations for both external fields. The constraint of vanishing 3-dimensional Ricci scalar is imposed in the path integral, which therefore explicitly depends on two propagating gravitational degrees of freedom only. Because the matter fields are classical, the present model contains only logarithmic divergences. Furthermore, it imposes the characteristic Horava-Lifshitz scale to be smaller than $10^{10}$ GeV, if one wishes not to violate the current bounds on Lorentz symmetry violation.

Non-Hermitian extension of gauge theories and implications for neutrino physics

An extension of QED is considered in which the Dirac fermion has both Hermitian and anti-Hermitian mass terms, as well as both vector and axial-vector couplings to the gauge field. Gauge invariance is restored when the Hermitian and anti-Hermitian masses are of equal magnitude, and the theory reduces to that of a single massless Weyl fermion. An analogous non-Hermitian Yukawa theory is considered, and it is shown that this model can explain the smallness of the light-neutrino masses and provide an additional source of leptonic CP violation.

Spherically symmetric solutions, Newton's Law and IR limit λ->1, in Covariant Horava Lifshitz Gravity

In this note we examine whether spherically symmetric solutions in Covariant Horava Lifshitz Gravity can reproduce Newton's Law in the IR limit λ->1. We adopt the position that the auxiliary field A is independent of the space-time metric [10,11], and we assume, as in [4], that $λ$ is a running coupling constant. We show that under these assumptions, spherically symmetric solutions fail to restore the standard Newtonian physics in the IR limit λ->1, unless λdoes not run, and has the fixed value λ=1. Finally, we comment on the Horava and Melby Thompson approach [4] in which A is assumed as a part of the space-time metric in the IR.

Inflation via Gravitino Condensation in Dynamically Broken Supergravity

Gravitino-condensate-induced inflation via the super-Higgs effect is a UV-motivated scenario for both inflating the early universe and breaking local supersymmetry dynamically, entirely independent of any coupling to external matter. As an added benefit, this also removes the (as of yet unobserved) massless Goldstino associated to global supersymmetry breaking from the particle spectrum. In this review we detail the pertinent properties and outline previously hidden details of the various steps required in this context in order to make contact with current inflationary phenomenology. The class of models of SUGRA we use to exemplify our approach are minimal four-dimensional N=1 supergravity and conformal extensions thereof (with broken conformal symmetry). Therein, the gravitino condensate itself can play the role of the inflaton, however the requirement of slow-roll necessitates unnaturally large values of the wave-function renormalisation. Nevertheless, there is an alternative scenario that may provide Starobinsky-type inflation, occurring in the broken-SUGRA phase around the non-trivial minima of the gravitino-condensate effective potential. In this scenario higher curvature corrections to the effective action, crucial for the onset of an inflationary phase, arise as a result of integrating out massive quantum gravitino fields in the path integral. The latter scenario is compatible with Planck satellite phenomenology but not with BICEP2 data.

Non-Hermitian Lagrangian for quasi-relativistic fermions

We present a Lorentz-symmetry violating Lagrangian for free fermions, which is local but not Hermitian, whereas the corresponding Hamiltonian is Hermitian but not local. A specific feature of the model is that the dispersion relation is relativistic in both the IR and in the UV, but not in an intermediate regime, set by a given mass scale. The consistency of the model is shown by the study of properties expected in analogy with the Dirac Lagrangian.

preprint2014arXiv

Quasi-relativistic fermions and dynamical flavour oscillations

We introduce new Lorentz-symmetry violating kinematics for a four-fermion interaction model, where dynamical mass generation is allowed, irrespectively of the strength of the coupling. In addition, these kinematics lead to a quasi-relativistic dispersion relation, in the sense that it is relativistic in both the infrared and the ultraviolet, but not in an intermediate regime, characterized by the mass $M$. For two fermions, we show that a flavour-mixing mass matrix is generated dynamically, and the Lorentz symmetric limit $M\to\infty$ leads to two free relativistic fermions, with flavour oscillations. This model, valid for either Dirac or Majorana fermions, can describe any set of phenomenological values for the eigen masses and the mixing angle.

Dynamical mass generation in Lorentz-violating QED

A Lorentz violating modification of massless QED is proposed, with higher order space derivatives for the photon field. The fermion dynamical mass generation is studied with the Schwinger-Dyson approach, and it is found that the resulting mass is many orders of magnitude smaller than the (Plank-) mass scale introduced by the higher order derivative terms. This is due to a suppressing factor, non-analytic in the fine structure constant and exponentially small. This scenario is an alternative to the Higgs mechanism for the electron mass, which arises here from Lorentz violating effects at high energies.

Dynamical Supergravity Breaking via the Super-Higgs Effect Revisited

We investigate the dynamical breaking of local supersymmetry (supergravity), including the Deser-Zumino super-Higgs effect, via the corresponding one-loop effective potential for the simple but quite representative cases of N=1, D=4 simple supergravity and a (simplified) conformal version of it. We find solutions to the effective equations which indicate dynamical generation of a gravitino mass, thus breaking supergravity. In the case of conformal supergravity models, the gravitino mass can be much lower than the Planck scale, for global supersymmetry breaking scales below the Grand Unification scale. The absence of instabilities in the effective potential arising from the quantum fluctuations of the metric field is emphasised, contrary to previous claims in the literature.

Fermion effective dispersion relation for z=2 Lifshitz QED

We study consequences of Lorentz symmetry violation in a z=2 Lifshitz extension of QED in 3+1 dimensions, and we discuss non-trivial effects of quantization. Because of the specific power of space momentum in propagators of the model, dimensional regularization leads to an unusual interpretation of loop integrals, which are finite even when the space dimension goes to the integer 3. We check the consistency of the approach by calculating the (vanishing) corrections to the photon mass and the IR-divergence-free corrections to the dispersion relation for massless fermions.

Galaxy Rotation Curves in Covariant Horava-Lifshitz Gravity

Using the multiplicity of solutions for the projectable case of the covariant extension of Horava-Lifshitz Gravity, we show that an appropriate choice for the auxiliary field allows for an effective description of galaxy rotation curves. This description is based on static and spherically symmetric solutions of covariant Horava-Lifshitz Gravity and does not require Dark Matter.

Lorentz-Violating Regulator Gauge Fields as the Origin of Dynamical Flavour Oscillations

We show how a mass mixing matrix can be generated dynamically, for two massless fermion flavours coupled to a Lorentz invariance violating (LIV) gauge field. The LIV features play the role of a regulator for the gap equations, and the non-analytic dependence of the dynamical masses, as functions of the gauge coupling, allows to consider the limit where the LIV gauge field eventually decouples from the fermions. Lorentz invariance is then recovered, to describe the oscillation between two free fermion flavours, and we check that the finite dynamical masses are the only effects of the original LIV theory. We also discuss briefly a connection of our results with the case of Majorana neutrinos in both, the standard model, where only left-handed (active) neutrinos are considered, and extensions thereof, with sterile right-handed neutrinos.

Properties of a consistent Lorentz-violating Abelian gauge theory

A Lorentz violating modification of massless QED is proposed, with higher order space derivatives for the photon field. The fermion dynamical mass generation is studied with the Schwinger-Dyson approach. Perturbative properties of the model are calculated at one-loop and discussed at higher-order loops, showing the consistency of the model. We explain that there is no contradiction with the definition of the speed of light c, although fermions see an an effective light cone, with a maximum speed smaller than c.

Starobinsky-type Inflation in Dynamical Supergravity Breaking Scenarios

In the context of dynamical breaking of local supersymmetry (supergravity), including the Deser-Zumino super-Higgs effect, for the simple but quite representative cases of N=1, D=4 supergravity, we discuss the emergence of Starobinsky-type inflation, due to quantum corrections in the effective action arising from integrating out gravitino fields in their massive phase. This type of inflation may occur after a first-stage small-field inflation that characterises models near the origin of the one-loop effective potential, and it may occur at the non-trivial minima of the latter. Phenomenologically realistic scenarios, compatible with the Planck data, may be expected for the conformal supergravity variants of the basic model.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking and linear effective potentials

The convexity of a scalar effective potential is a well known property, and, in the situation of spontaneous symmetry breaking, leads to the so-called Maxwell construction, characterised by a flat effective potential between the minima of the bare potential. Simple derivations are given here, which show how linear effective potentials arise from non-trivial saddles points which dominate the partition function, for a self-interacting scalar field and for a Yukawa model.

A Lorentz-Violating Alternative to Higgs Mechanism?

We consider a four-dimensional field-theory model with two massless fermions, coupled to an Abelian vector field without flavour mixing, and to another Abelian vector field with flavour mixing. Both Abelian vectors have a Lorentz-violating kinetic term, introducing a Lorentz-violation mass scale $M$, from which fermions and the flavour-mixing vector get their dynamical masses, whereas the vector coupled without flavour mixing remains massless. When the two coupling constants have similar values in order of magnitude, a mass hierarchy pattern emerges, in which one fermion is very light compared to the other, whilst the vector mass is larger than the mass of the heavy fermion. The work presented here may be considered as a Lorentz-symmetry-Violating alternative to the Higgs mechanism, in the sense that no scalar particle (fundamental or composite) is necessary for the generation of the vector-meson mass. However, the model is not realistic given that, as a result of Lorentz Violation, the maximal (light-cone) speed seen by the fermions is smaller than that of the massless gauge boson (which equals the speed of light in vacuo) by an amount which is unacceptably large to be compatible with the current tests of Lorentz Invariance, unless the gauge couplings assume unnaturally small values. Possible ways out of this phenomenological drawback are briefly discussed, postponing a detailed construction of more realistic models for future work.

Lifshitz-type Quantum Field Theories in Particle Physics

This introduction to Lifshitz-type field theories reviews some of its aspects in Particle Physics. Attractive features of these models are described with different examples, as the improvement of graphs convergence, the introduction of new renormalizable interactions, dynamical mass generation, asymptotic freedom, and other features related to more specific models. On the other hand, problems with the expected emergence of Lorentz symmetry in the IR are discussed, related to the different effective light cones seen by different particles when they interact.

On the Possibility of Superluminal Neutrino Propagation

We analyze the possibility of superluminal neutrino propagation delta v = (v - c)/c > 0 as indicated by OPERA data, in view of previous phenomenological constraints from supernova SN1987a and gravitational Cerenkov radiation. We argue that the SN1987a data rule out delta v ~ (E_ν/M_N)^N for N \le 2 and exclude, in particular, a Lorentz-invariant interpretation in terms of a 'conventional' tachyonic neutrino. We present two toy Lorentz-violating theoretical models, one a Lifshitz-type fermion model with superluminality depending quadratically on energy, and the other a Lorentz-violating modification of a massless Abelian gauge theory with axial-vector couplings to fermions. In the presence of an appropriate background field, fermions may propagate superluminally or subluminally, depending inversely on energy, and on direction. Reconciling OPERA with SN1987a would require this background field to depend on location.

Spherically symmetric solutions in Covariant Horava-Lifshitz Gravity

We study the most general case of spherically symmetric vacuum solutions in the framework of the Covariant Horava Lifshitz Gravity, for an action that includes all possible higher order terms in curvature which are compatible with power-counting normalizability requirement. We find that solutions can be separated into two main classes: (i) solutions with nonzero radial shift function, and (ii) solutions with zero radial shift function. In the case (ii), spherically symmetric solutions are consistent with observations if we adopt the view of Horava and Melby-Tomson, according to which the auxiliary field A can be considered as a part of an effective general relativistic metric, which is valid only in the IR limit. On the other hand, in the case (i), consistency with observations implies that the field A should be independent of the spacetime geometry, as the Newtonian potential arises from the nonzero radial shift function. Also, our aim in this paper is to discuss and compare these two alternative but different assumptions for the auxiliary field A.

Comments on branon dressing and the Standard Model

This technical note shows how Electrodynamics and a Yukawa model are dressed after integrating out perturbative brane fluctuations, and it is found that first order corrections in the inverse of the brane tension occur for the fermion and scalar wave functions, the couplings and the masses. Nevertheless, field redefinitions actually lead to effective actions where only masses are dressed to this first order. We compare our results with the literature and find discrepancies at the next order, which, however, might not be measurable in the valid regime of low-energy brane fluctuations.

Inflaton in R-dependent potential

We consider a non-minimally coupled inflaton, in a higher order curvature background, leading to a potential which evolves with the curvature scalar of the Universe, and which describes two regimes. The first one is a de Sitter phase, where the potential is static, and an exact exponential solution is found for the inflaton. The second regime, triggered by the inflaton reaching a threshold, leads to a power-law expansion, during which the potential becomes flat, quickly enough for the inflaton never to reach the minimum of the initial symmetry breaking potential. This scenario is an alternative to the inflaton oscillating about a minimum of the potential, and where preheating is a consequence of the flattening of the potential during the power-law expanding phase.

Global Renormalization Group

The motivation and the challenge in applying the renormalization group for systems with several scaling regimes is briefly outlined. The four dimensional $ϕ^4$ model serves as an example where a nontrivial low energy scaling regime is identified in the vicinity of the spinodal instability region. It is pointed out that the effective theory defined in the vicinity of the spinodal instability offers an amplification mechanism, a precursor of the condensation that can be used to explore nonuniversal forces at high energies.
