Angle and angular momentum -- new twist for an old pair

Reaching ultimate performance of quantum technologies requires the use of detection at quantum limits and access to all resources of the underlying physical system. We establish a full quantum analogy between the pair of angular momentum and exponential angular variable, and the structure of canonically conjugate position and momentum. This includes the notion of optimal simultaneous measurement of the angular momentum and angular variable, the identification of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-like variables and states, and finally a phase-space representation of quantum states. Our construction is based on close interconnection of the three concepts and may serve as a template for the treatment of other observables. This theory also provides a new testbed for implementation of quantum technologies combining discrete and continuous quantum variables.

Achieving the ultimate quantum timing resolution

Accurate time-delay measurement is at the core of many modern technologies. Here, we present a temporal-mode demultiplexing scheme that achieves the ultimate quantum precision for the simultaneous estimation of the temporal centroid, the time offset, and the relative intensities of an incoherent mixture of ultrashort pulses at the single-photon level. We experimentally resolve temporal separations ten times smaller than the pulse duration, as well as imbalanced intensities differing by a factor of $10^{2}$. This represents an improvement of more than an order of magnitude over the best standard methods based on intensity detection.

Evading Vacuum Noise: Wigner Projections or Husimi Samples?

The accuracy in determining the quantum state of a system depends on the type of measurement performed. Homodyne and heterodyne detection are the two main schemes in continuous-variable quantum information. The former leads to a direct reconstruction of the Wigner function of the state, whereas the latter samples its Husimi $Q$~function. We experimentally demonstrate that heterodyne detection outperforms homodyne detection for almost all Gaussian states, the details of which depend on the squeezing strength and thermal noise.

How well can you know the edge of a quantum pyramid?

We consider a symmetric quantum communication scenario in which the signal states are edges of a quantum pyramid of arbitrary dimension and arbitrary shape, and all edge states are transmitted with the same probability. The receiver could employ different decoding strategies: he could minimize the error probability, or discriminate without ambiguity, or extract the accessible information. We state the optimal measurement scheme for each strategy. For large parameter ranges, the standard square-root measurement does not extract the information optimally.

Iterative procedure for computing accessible information in quantum communication

We present an iterative algorithm that finds the optimal measurement for extracting the accessible information in any quantum communication scenario. The maximization is achieved by a steepest-ascent approach toward the extremal point, following the gradient uphill in sufficiently small steps. We apply it to a simple ad-hoc example, as well as to a problem with a bearing on the security of a tomographic protocol for quantum key distribution.
