Spectrum of SU(2) gauge theory at large number of flavors

We present a numerical study of the spectrum of an asymptotically non-free $SU(2)$ gauge theory with $N_f=24$ massive fermion flavors. For such large number of flavors, asymptotic freedom is lost and the massless theory is governed by a gaussian fixed point at long distances. If fermions are massive they decouple at low energy scales and the theory is confining. We present a scaling law for the masses of the hadrons, glueballs and string tension as functions of fermion mass. The hadrons become effectively heavy quark systems, with masses approximately twice the fermion mass, whereas the energy scale of the confinement, probed by e.g. the string tension, is much smaller and vanishes asymptotically as $m_\text{fermion}^{2.18}$. Our results from lattice simulations are compatible with this behaviour.

SU(2) gauge theory with $N_f=24$ quarks at non-zero mass

We study SU(2) gauge field theory with $N_f=24$ quarks. The theory is asymptotically non-free and, at vanishing quark mass, governed by a Gaussian fixed point at long distances. On the other hand, at non-zero quark mass the quarks are expected to decouple at long distances and the system behaves like confining pure gauge SU(2) theory. We study the mass spectrum of the theory as the quark mass is varied and obtain scaling laws for meson masses and string tension. We also measure the evolution of the coupling constant at non-zero quark mass with gradient flow method. We observe unambiguously the decoupling of the quarks with the associated change of evolution of the coupling constant.

Sp(4) gauge theories on the lattice: Quenched fundamental and antisymmetric fermions

We perform lattice studies of meson mass spectra and decay constants of the $Sp(4)$ gauge theory in the quenched approximation. We consider two species of (Dirac) fermions as matter field content, transforming in the 2-index antisymmetric and the fundamental representation of the gauge group, respectively. All matter fields are formulated as Wilson fermions. We extrapolate to the continuum and massless limits, and compare to each other the results obtained for the two species of mesons. In the case of two fundamental and three antisymmetric fermions, the long-distance dynamics is relevant for composite Higgs models. This is the first lattice study of this class of theories. The global $SU(4) \times SU(6)$ symmetry is broken to the $Sp(4) \times SO(6)$ subgroup, and the condensates align with the explicit mass terms present in the lattice formulation of the theory. The main results of our quenched calculations are that, with fermions in the 2-index antisymmetric representation of the group, the masses squared and decay constant squared of all the mesons we considered are larger than the corresponding quantities for the fundamental representation, by factors that vary between $\sim$1.2 and $\sim$2.7. We also present technical results that will be useful for future lattice investigations of dynamical simulations, of composite chimera baryons, and of the approach to large $N$ in the $Sp(2N)$ theories considered. We briefly discuss their high-temperature behaviour, where symmetry restoration and enhancement are expected.

Walking Dynamics Guaranteed

We report evidence for a continuous transition from an infrared conformal phase to a chirally broken one in four dimensions. We study a model with two Dirac fermions in the adjoint representation of an SU(2) gauge interaction and a chirally symmetric four-fermion interaction. At large four-fermion coupling, the model goes through a transition into a chirally broken phase and infrared conformality is lost. We show strong evidence that this transition is continuous, which would guarantee walking dynamics within the scaling region in the chirally broken phase.

A simple method to optimize HMC performance

We present a practical strategy to optimize a set of Hybrid Monte Carlo parameters in simulations of QCD and QCD-like theories. We specialize to the case of mass-preconditioning, with multiple time-step Omelyan integrators. Starting from properties of the shadow Hamiltonian we show how the optimal setup for the integrator can be chosen once the forces and their variances are measured, assuming that those only depend on the mass-preconditioning parameter.

Adjoint SU(2) with Four Fermion Interactions

Four fermion interactions appear in many models of Beyond Standard Model physics. In Technicolour and composite Higgs models Standard Model fermion masses can be generated by four fermion terms. They are also expected to modify the dynamics of the new strongly interacting sector. In particular in technicolour models it has been suggested that they can be used to break infrared conformality and produce a walking theory with a large mass anomalous dimension. We study the SU(2) gauge theory with 2 adjoint fermions and a chirally symmetric four fermion term. We demonstrate chiral symmetry breaking at large four fermion coupling and study the phase diagram of the model.

Gradient Flow Coupling in the SU(2) gauge theory with two adjoint fermions

We study SU(2) gauge theory with two fermion flavors in the adjoint representation. Using a clover improved HEX smeared action and the gradient flow running coupling allows us to simulate with larger lattice size than before. We find an infrared fixed point after a continuum extrapolation in the range $4.5 \lesssim g^{*2} \lesssim 5$. We also measure the mass anomalous dimension and find the value $ 0.25 \lesssim γ^* \lesssim 0.28 $ at the fixed point.

Running coupling in SU(2) gauge theory with two adjoint fermions

We study SU(2) gauge theory with two Dirac fermions in the adjoint representation of the gauge group on the lattice. Using clover improved Wilson fermion action with hypercubic truncated stout smearing we perform simulations at larger coupling than earlier. We measure the evolution of the coupling constant using the step scaling method with Schrödinger functional and study the remaining discretization effects. At weak coupling we observe significant discretization effects, which make it difficult to obtain a fully controlled continuum limit. Nevertheless, the data remains consistent with the existence of a fixed point in the interval $2.2\lesssim g^{\ast 2}\lesssim 3$. We also measure the anomalous dimension and find its value at the fixed point is $γ^\ast\simeq 0.2\pm 0.03$.

Gradient flow and IR fixed point in SU(2) with Nf=8 flavors

We study the running of the coupling in SU(2) gauge theory with 8 massless fundamental representation fermion flavours, using the gradient flow method with the Schrödinger functional boundary conditions. Gradient flow allows us to measure robust continuum limit for the step scaling function. The results show a clear indication of infrared fixed point consistent with perturbation theory.

Template Composite Dark Matter : SU(2) gauge theory with 2 fundamental flavours

We present a non perturbative study of SU(2) gauge theory with two fundamental Dirac flavours. We discuss how the model can be used as a template for composite Dark Matter (DM). We estimate one particular interaction of the DM candidate with the Standard Model : the interaction through photon exchange computing the electric polarizability of the DM candidate. Finally, we briefly discuss the viability of the model given the present experimental constraints.

The Gradient Flow Coupling in Minimal Walking Technicolor

We present a measurement of the running coupling in SU(2) with two adjoint fermions in the Yang-Mills gradient flow scheme. The simulations are performed with Schrödinger Functional boundary conditions using an improved HEX-smeared Wilson fermion action. We obtain a step scaling function by defining the coupling at a scale relative to the finite size of the lattice. We find a continuum limit with a non-trivial infrared fixed point.

Determining the conformal window: SU(2) gauge theory with N_f = 4, 6 and 10 fermion flavours

We study the evolution of the coupling in SU(2) gauge field theory with $N_f=4$, 6 and 10 fundamental fermion flavours on the lattice. These values are chosen close to the expected edges of the conformal window, where the theory possesses an infrared fixed point. We use improved Wilson-clover action, and measure the coupling in the Schrödinger functional scheme. At four flavours we observe that the couping grows towards the infrared, implying QCD-like behaviour, whereas at ten flavours the results are compatible with a Banks-Zaks type infrared fixed point. The six flavour case remains inconclusive: the evolution of the coupling is seen to become slower at the infrared, but the accuracy of the results falls short from fully resolving the fate of the coupling. We also measure the mass anomalous dimension for the $N_f=6$ case.

Exploring the conformal window: SU(2) gauge theory on the lattice

We study the SU(2) gauge theory on the lattice with different numbers of fermions in the fundamental representation of the gauge group to explore the gauge theory phase diagram. We find evidence for an infrared fixed point for ten flavors. The theory with six flavors shows behaviors compatible with the existence of a (quasi) stable fixed point, but the large errors in the present data do not allow for decisive confirmation of this.

Mapping the Conformal Window: SU(2) with 4, 6 and 10 flavors of fermions

We present studies of the SU(2) gauge theory with 4, 6 and 10 fermion flavors. These models are expected to lie on both sides of the edge of the conformal window, where the theory has an infrared fixed point. We observe that the coupling grows with the length scale at four flavors, implying QCD-like behavior. At ten flavors the results are compatible with a Bank-Zaks type fixed point. The results at six flavors remain inconclusive: the running is slow towards the infrared but the range and accuracy of the study are insufficient for determining the existence of a fixed point.

Non-perturbatively improved clover action for SU(2) gauge + fundamental and adjoint representation fermions

The research of strongly coupled beyond-the-standard-model theories has generated significant interest in non-abelian gauge field theories with different number of fermions in different representations. Motivated by the increased interest to various technicolor scenarios, we study the non-perturbative improvement of the Wilson-clover action with SU(2) gauge fields and 2 flavors of fermions in the fundamental and adjoint representations. The Sheikholeslami-Wohlert coefficients are fixed using Schroedinger functional boundary conditions. The adjoint representation theory is a candidate for a "minimal technicolor" theory, already studied on the lattice using unimproved Wilson fermions.

Nonperturbative improvement of SU(2) lattice gauge theory with adjoint or fundamental flavors

SU(2) gauge theory with two fermions transforming under the adjoint representation may appear conformal or almost conformal in the infrared, and is one of the candidate theories for building models for technicolor. Early lattice Monte Carlo studies of this model have used unimproved Wilson fermion formulation, which can be expected to have large lattice cutoff effects. In this paper we present the calculation of the O(a) improved lattice Wilson-clover action of the theory. The Sheikholeslami-Wohlert coefficient has been determined non-perturbatively, and various boundary improvement terms, needed for the Schroedinger functional formalism, have been calculated in perturbation theory. For comparison, we have also determined the improvement coefficients for SU(2) gauge theory with two fundamental representation fermions. The calculation paves way for more accurate lattice Monte Carlo analyses of the theory in the future.

Perturbative improvement of SU(2) gauge theory with two Wilson fermions in the adjoint representation

We present a perturbative calculation of the improvement coefficients of SU(2) gauge theory with adjoint representation Wilson-clover fermions and using Schrodinger functional boundary conditions. The computation of the boundary improvement terms is necessary for the full O(a) improvement. With two flavours of adjoint representation fermions this theory is called Minimal Walking Technicolor model.

Spectrum of SU(2) gauge theory with two fermions in the adjoint representation

We present preliminary results of lattice simulations of SU(2) gauge theory with two Wilson fermions in the adjoint representation. This theory has recently attracted considerable attention because it might possess an infrared fixed point (or an almost-fixed-point), and hence be a candidate for a walking technicolor theory. In this work we study the particle spectrum of the theory, and compare it with more familiar spectrum of the theory with SU(2) gauge fields and two flavors of fundamental representation fermions.
