Second-order optimality conditions for non-convex set-constrained optimization problems

In this paper we study second-order optimality conditions for non-convex set-constrained optimization problems. For a convex set-constrained optimization problem, it is well-known that second-order optimality conditions involve the support function of the second-order tangent set. In this paper we propose two approaches for establishing second-order optimality conditions for the non-convex case. In the first approach we extend the concept of the support function so that it is applicable to general non-convex set-constrained problems, whereas in the second approach we introduce the notion of the directional regular tangent cone and apply classical results of convex duality theory. Besides the second-order optimality conditions, the novelty of our approach lies in the systematic introduction and use, respectively, of directional versions of well-known concepts from variational analysis.

Bilevel Polynomial Programs and Semidefinite Relaxation Methods

A bilevel program is an optimization problem whose constraints involve another optimization problem. This paper studies bilevel polynomial programs (BPPs), i.e., all the functions are polynomials. We reformulate BPPs equivalently as semi-infinite polynomial programs (SIPPs), using Fritz John conditions and Jacobian representations. Combining the exchange technique and Lasserre type semidefinite relaxations, we propose numerical methods for solving both simple and general BPPs. For simple BPPs, we prove the convergence to global optimal solutions. Numerical experiments are presented to show the efficiency of proposed algorithms.

Necessary Optimality Conditions for Optimal Control Problems with Equilibrium Constraints

This paper introduces and studies the optimal control problem with equilibrium constraints (OCPEC). The OCPEC is an optimal control problem with a mixed state and control equilibrium constraint formulated as a complementarity constraint and it can be seen as a dynamic mathematical program with equilibrium constraints. It provides a powerful modeling paradigm for many practical problems such as bilevel optimal control problems and dynamic principal-agent problems. In this paper, we propose weak, Clarke, Mordukhovich and strong stationarities for the OCPEC. Moreover, we give some sufficient conditions to ensure that the local minimizers of the OCPEC are Fritz John type weakly stationary, Mordukhovich stationary and strongly stationary, respectively. Unlike Pontryagain's maximum principle for the classical optimal control problem with equality and inequality constraints, a counter example shows that for general OCPECs, there may exist two sets of multipliers for the complementarity constraints. A condition under which these two sets of multipliers coincide is given.

Necessary optimality conditions for optimal control problems with nonsmooth mixed state and control constraints

In this paper we study an optimal control problem with nonsmooth mixed state and control constraints. In most of the existing results, the necessary optimality condition for optimal control problems with mixed state and control constraints are derived under the Mangasarian-Fromovitz condition and under the assumption that the state and control constraint functions are smooth. In this paper we derive necessary optimality conditions for problems with nonsmooth mixed state and control constraints under constraint qualifications based on pseudo-Lipschitz continuity and calmness of certain set-valued maps. The necessary conditions are stratified, in the sense that they are asserted on precisely the domain upon which the hypotheses (and the optimality) are assumed to hold. Moreover necessary optimality conditions with an Euler inclusion taking an explicit multiplier form are derived for certain cases.

Smoothing SQP methods for solving degenerate nonsmooth constrained optimization problems with applications to bilevel programs

We consider a degenerate nonsmooth and nonconvex optimization problem for which the standard constraint qualification such as the generalized Mangasarian Fromovitz constraint qualification (GMFCQ) may not hold. We use smoothing functions with the gradient consistency property to approximate the nonsmooth functions and introduce a smoothing sequential quadratic programming (SQP) algorithm under the exact penalty framework. We show that any accumulation point of a selected subsequence of the iteration sequence generated by the smoothing SQP algorithm is a Clarke stationary point, provided that the sequence of multipliers and the sequence of exact penalty parameters are bounded. Furthermore, we propose a new condition called the weakly generalized Mangasarian Fromovitz constraint qualification (WGMFCQ) that is weaker than the GMFCQ. We show that the extended version of the WGMFCQ guarantees the boundedness of the sequence of multipliers and the sequence of exact penalty parameters and thus guarantees the global convergence of the smoothing SQP algorithm. We demonstrate that the WGMFCQ can be satisfied by bilevel programs for which the GMFCQ never holds. Preliminary numerical experiments show that the algorithm is efficient for solving degenerate nonsmooth optimization problem such as the simple bilevel program.
