Dynamics of the Ericksen-Leslie Equations with General Leslie Stress I: The Incompressible Isotropic Case

The Ericksen-Leslie model for nematic liquid crystals in a bounded domain with general Leslie and isotropic Ericksen stress is studied in the case of a non-isothermal and incompressible fluid. This system is shown to be locally well-posed in the $L_p$-setting, and a dynamic theory is developed. The equilibria are identified and shown to be normally stable. In particular, a local solution extends to a unique, global strong solution provided the initial data are close to an equilibrium or the solution is eventually bounded in the topology of the natural state manifold. In this case, the solution converges exponentially to an equilibrium, in the topology of the state manifold. The above results are proven {\em without} any structural assumptions on the Leslie coefficients and in particular {\em without} assuming Parodi's relation.

On the Interface Formation Model for Dynamic Triple Lines

This paper revisits the theory of Y. Shikhmurzaev on forming interfaces as a continuum thermodynamical model for dynamic triple lines. We start with the derivation of the balances for mass, momentum, energy and entropy in a three-phase fluid system with full interfacial physics, including a brief review of the relevant transport theorems on interfaces and triple lines. Employing the entropy principle in the form given in [Bothe & Dreyer, Acta Mechanica, doi:10.1007/s00707-014-1275-1] but extended to this more general case, we arrive at the entropy production and perform a linear closure, except for a nonlinear closure for the sorption processes. Specialized to the isothermal case, we obtain a thermodynamically consistent mathematical model for dynamic triple lines and show that the total available energy is a strict Lyapunov function for this system.

Reaction-diffusion systems of Maxwell-Stefan type with reversible mass-action kinetics

The mass-based Maxwell-Stefan approach to one-phase multicomponent reactive mixtures is mathematically analyzed. It is shown that the resulting quasilinear, strongly coupled reaction-diffusion system is locally well-posed in an $L_p$-setting and generates a local semiflow on its natural state space. Solutions regularize instantly and become strictly positive if their initial components are all nonnegative and nontrivial. For a class of reversible mass-action kinetics, the positive equilibria are identified: these are precisely the constant chemical equilibria of the system, which may form a manifold. Here the total free energy of the system is employed which serves as a Lyapunov function for the system. By the generalized principle of linearized stability, positive equilibria are proved to be normally stable.

Dynamics of Nematic Liquid Crystal Flows: the Quasilinear Approach

Consider the (simplified) Leslie-Erickson model for the flow of nematic liquid crystals in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ for n > 1$. This article develops a complete dynamic theory for these equations, analyzing the system as a quasilinear parabolic evolution equation in an $L_p-L_q$-setting. First, the existence of a unique local strong solution is proved. This solution extends to a global strong solution, provided the initial data are close to an equilibrium or the solution is eventually bounded in the natural norm of the underlying state space. In this case the solution converges exponentially to an equilibrium. Moreover, the solution is shown to be real analytic, jointly in time and space.

On a Class of Energy Preserving Boundary Conditions for Incompressible Newtonian Flows

We derive a class of energy preserving boundary conditions for incompressible Newtonian flows and prove local-in-time well-posedness of the resulting initial boundary value problems, i.e. the Navier-Stokes equations complemented by one of the derived boundary conditions, in an Lp-setting in domains, which are either bounded or unbounded with almost flat, sufficiently smooth boundary. The results are based on maximal regularity properties of the underlying linearisations, which are also established in the above setting.

On Two-Phase Flows with Soluble Surfactant

The presence of surfactants has a pronounced effect on the surface tension and, hence, on the stress balance at the phase separating interface of two-phase flows. The transport of momentum induced by the local variations of the capillary forces are known as Marangoni effects. Here we study a model, which assumes the surfactant to be soluble in one of the adjacent bulk phases and which represents a generalization of the two-phase Navier-Stokes equations. Based on maximal Lp-regularity results for suitable linearizations we obtain local well-posedness of this model. We employ recent results from the Lp-theory of two-phase flows without surfactant.
