Moduli spaces of AdS_5 vacua in N=2 supergravity

We determine the conditions for maximally supersymmetric AdS_5 vacua of five-dimensional gauged N=2 supergravity coupled to vector-, tensor- and hypermultiplets charged under an arbitrary gauge group. In particular, we show that the unbroken gauge group of the AdS_5 vacua has to contain an U(1)_R-factor. Moreover we prove that the scalar deformations which preserve all supercharges form a Kahler submanifold of the ambient quaternionic Kahler manifold spanned by the scalars in the hypermultiplets.

Hiding the little hierarchy problem in the NMSSM

In this paper we consider a set of soft supersymmetry breaking terms within the NMSSM which leads to a small hierarchy between the supersymmetry breaking scale and the electroweak scale. Specifically only the gaugino masses and the soft term in the Higgs sector are non-vanishing at the GUT scale. This pattern can be found in gaugino mediated models and in higher-dimensional orbifold GUTs. We study the phenomenology of this scenario and find different low energy spectra depending on the Yukawa coupling $λ$ of the NMSSM singlet. In particular, for low values of $λ$ the singlet is the lightest scalar and the singlino is the LSP while for large values of $λ$ both are heavy and the gravitino can be the LSP. The singlet pseudoscalar is very light in the entire parameter space.

Higher-Derivative Supergravity and Moduli Stabilization

We review the ghost-free four-derivative terms for chiral superfields in $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry and supergravity. These terms induce cubic polynomial equations of motion for the chiral auxiliary fields and correct the scalar potential. We discuss the different solutions and argue that only one of them is consistent with the principles of effective field theory. Special attention is paid to the corrections along flat directions which can be stabilized or destabilized by the higher-derivative terms. We then compute these higher-derivative terms explicitly for the type IIB string compactified on a Calabi-Yau orientifold with fluxes via Kaluza-Klein reducing the $(α')^3 R^4$ corrections in ten dimensions for the respective $\mathcal{N}=1$ Kähler moduli sector. We prove that together with flux and the known $(α')^3$-corrections the higher-derivative term stabilizes all Calabi-Yau manifolds with positive Euler number, provided the sign of the new correction is negative.

N=4 Supersymmetric AdS5 Vacua and their Moduli Spaces

We classify the N=4 supersymmetric AdS5 backgrounds that arise as solutions of five-dimensional N=4 gauged supergravity. We express our results in terms of the allowed embedding tensor components and identify the structure of the associated gauge groups. We show that the moduli space of these AdS vacua is of the form SU(1,m)/(U(1)x SU(m)) and discuss our results regarding holographically dual N=2 SCFTs and their conformal manifolds.

Supersymmetric AdS_7 backgrounds in half-maximal supergravity and marginal operators of (1,0) SCFTs

We determine the supersymmetric AdS_7 backgrounds of seven-dimensional half-maximal gauged supergravities and show that they do not admit any deformations that preserve all 16 supercharges. We compare this result to the conformal manifold of the holographically dual (1,0) superconformal field theories and show that accordingly its representation theory implies that no supersymmetric marginal operators exist.

Dilaton domination in the MSSM and its singlet extensions

We analyse the current status of the dilaton domination scenario in the MSSM and its singlet extensions taking into account the measured value of the Higgs mass, the relic abundance of dark matter and constraints from SUSY searches at the LHC. We find that in the case of the MSSM the requirement of a dark matter relic abundance in accord with observation severely restricts the allowed parameter space, implying an upper bound on the superpartner masses which makes it fully testable at LHC-14. In singlet extensions with a large singlet-MSSM coupling $λ$ as favoured by naturalness arguments the coloured sparticles should again be within the reach of the LHC-14, while for small $λ$ it is possible to decouple the MSSM and singlet sectors, achieving the correct dark matter abundance with a singlino LSP while allowing for a heavy MSSM spectrum.

N=2 Heterotic-Type II duality and bundle moduli

Heterotic string compactifications on a $K3$ surface $\mathfrak{S}$ depend on a choice of hyperkähler metric, anti-self-dual gauge connection and Kalb-Ramond flux, parametrized by hypermultiplet scalars. The metric on hypermultiplet moduli space is in principle computable within the $(0,2)$ superconformal field theory on the heterotic string worldsheet, although little is known about it in practice. Using duality with type II strings compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold, we predict the form of the quaternion-Kähler metric on hypermultiplet moduli space when $\mathfrak{S}$ is elliptically fibered, in the limit of a large fiber and even larger base. The result is in general agreement with expectations from Kaluza-Klein reduction, in particular the metric has a two-stage fibration structure, where the $B$-field moduli are fibered over bundle and metric moduli, while bundle moduli are themselves fibered over metric moduli. A more precise match must await a detailed analysis of $R^2$-corrected ten-dimensional supergravity.

Quantum Corrections in String Compactifications on SU(3) Structure Geometries

We investigate quantum corrections to the classical four-dimensional low-energy effective action of type II string theory compactified on SU(3) structure geometries. Various methods previously developed for Calabi-Yau compactifications are adopted to determine - under some simple assumptions about the low-energy degrees of freedom - the leading perturbative corrections to the moduli space metrics in both alpha' and the string coupling constant. We find - in complete analogy to the Calabi-Yau case - that the corrections take a universal form dependent only on the Euler characteristic of the six-dimensional compact space.

Electrically gauged N=4 supergravities in D=4 with N=2 vacua

We study N=2 vacua in spontaneously broken N=4 electrically gauged supergravities in four space-time dimensions. We argue that the classification of all such solutions amounts to solving a system of purely algebraic equations. We then explicitly construct a special class of consistent N=2 solutions and study their properties. In particular we find that the spectrum assembles in N=2 massless or BPS supermultiplets. We show that (modulo U(1) factors) arbitrary unbroken gauge groups can be realized provided that the number of N=4 vector multiplets is large enough. Below the scale of partial supersymmetry breaking we calculate the relevant terms of the low-energy effective action and argue that the special Kahler manifold for vector multiplets is completely determined, up to its dimension, and lies in the unique series of special Kahler product manifolds.

Examples of N=2 to N=1 supersymmetry breaking

In this paper we consider gauged N=2 supergravities which arise in the low-energy limit of type II string theories and study examples which exhibit spontaneous partial supersymmetry breaking. For the quantum STU model we derive the scalar field space and the scalar potential of the N=1 supersymmetric low-energy effective action. We also study the properties of the Minkowskian N=1 supersymmetricground states for a broader class of supergravities including the quantum STU model.

On Moduli Spaces in $\bf{AdS_4}$ Supergravity

We study the structure of the supersymmetric moduli spaces of ${\cal N}=1$ and ${\cal N}=2$ supergravity theories in $AdS_4$ backgrounds. In the ${\cal N}=1$ case, the moduli space cannot be a complex submanifold of the Kähler field space, but is instead real with respect to the inherited complex structure. In ${\cal N}=2$ supergravity the same result holds for the vector multiplet moduli space, while the hypermultiplet moduli space is a Kähler submanifold of the quaternionic-Kähler field space. These findings are in agreement with AdS/CFT considerations.

6D Effective Action of Heterotic Compactification on K3 with nontrivial Gauge Bundles

We compute the six-dimensional effective action of the heterotic string compactified on K3 for the standard embedding and for a class of backgrounds with line bundles and appropriate Yang-Mills fluxes. We compute the couplings of the charged scalars and the bundle moduli as functions of the geometrical K3 moduli from a Kaluza-Klein analysis. We derive the D-term potential and show that in the flux backgrounds U(1) vector multiplets become massive by a Stuckelberg mechanism.

Building an explicit de Sitter

We construct an explicit example of a de Sitter vacuum in type IIB string theory that realizes the proposal of Kähler uplifting. As the large volume limit in this method depends on the rank of the largest condensing gauge group we carry out a scan of gauge group ranks over the Kreuzer-Skarke set of toric Calabi-Yau threefolds. We find large numbers of models with the largest gauge group factor easily exceeding a rank of one hundred. We construct a global model with Kähler uplifting on a two-parameter model on $\mathbb{CP}^4_{11169}$, by an explicit analysis from both the type IIB and F-theory point of view. The explicitness of the construction lies in the realization of a D7 brane configuration, gauge flux and RR and NS flux choices, such that all known consistency conditions are met and the geometric moduli are stabilized in a metastable de Sitter vacuum with spontaneous GUT scale supersymmetry breaking driven by an F-term of the Kähler moduli.

Heterotic-Type II duality in the hypermultiplet sector

We revisit the duality between heterotic string theory compactified on K3 x T^2 and type IIA compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold X in the hypermultiplet sector. We derive an explicit map between the field variables of the respective moduli spaces at the level of the classical effective actions. We determine the parametrization of the K3 moduli space consistent with the Ferrara-Sabharwal form. From the expression of the holomorphic prepotential we are led to conjecture that both X and its mirror must be K3 fibrations in order for the type IIA theory to have an heterotic dual. We then focus on the region of the moduli space where the metric is expressed in terms of a prepotential on both sides of the duality. Applying the duality we derive the heterotic hypermultiplet metric for a gauge bundle which is reduced to 24 point-like instantons. This result is confirmed by using the duality between the heterotic theory on T^3 and M-theory on K3. We finally study the hyper-Kaehler metric on the moduli space of an SU(2) bundle on K3.

Supersymmetric Vacua in N=2 Supergravity

We use the embedding tensor formalism to analyse maximally symmetric backgrounds of N=2 gauged supergravities which have the full N=2 supersymmetry. We state the condition for N=2 vacua and discuss some of their general properties. We show that if the gauged isometries leave the SU(2) R-symmetry invariant, then the N=2 vacuum must be Minkowski. This implies that there are no AdS backgrounds with eight unbroken supercharges in the effective N=2 supergravity of six-dimensional SU(3) x SU(3) structure compactifications of type II string theory and M-theory. Combined with previous results on N=1 vacua, we show that there exist N=2 supergravities with a given set of gauged Abelian isometries that have both N=2 and N=1 vacua. We also argue that an analogue of our analysis holds in five and six spacetime dimensions.

Voisin-Borcea Manifolds and Heterotic Orbifold Models

We study the relation between a heterotic T^6/Z6 orbifold model and a compactification on a smooth Voisin-Borcea Calabi-Yau three-fold with non-trivial line bundles. This orbifold can be seen as a Z2 quotient of T^4/Z3 x T^2. We consider a two-step resolution, whose intermediate step is (K3 x T^2)/Z2. This allows us to identify the massless twisted states which correspond to the geometric Kaehler and complex structure moduli. We work out the match of the two models when non-zero expectation values are given to all twisted geometric moduli. We find that even though the orbifold gauge group contains an SO(10) factor, a possible GUT group, the subgroup after higgsing does not even include the standard model gauge group. Moreover, after higgsing, the massless spectrum is non-chiral under the surviving gauge group.

The N=4 effective action of type IIA supergravity compactified on SU(2)-structure manifolds

We study compactifications of type IIA supergravity on six-dimensional manifolds with SU(2) structure and compute the low-energy effective action in terms of the non-trivial intrinsic torsion. The consistency with gauged N=4 supergravity is established and the gauge group is determined. Depending on the structure of the intrinsic torsion, antisymmetric tensor fields can become massive.

Spontaneous N=2 to N=1 Supersymmetry Breaking in Supergravity and Type II String Theory

Using the embedding tensor formalism we give the general conditions for the existence of N=1 vacua in spontaneously broken N=2 supergravities. Our results confirm the necessity of having both electrically and magnetically charged multiplets in the spectrum, but also show that no further constraints on the special Kahler geometry of the vector multiplets arise. The quaternionic field space of the hypermultiplets must have two commuting isometries, and as an example we discuss the special quaternionic-Kahler geometries which appear in the low-energy limit of type II string theories. For these cases we find the general solution for stable Minkowski and AdS N=1 vacua, and determine the charges in terms of the holomorphic prepotentials. We find that the string theory realisation of the N=1 Minkowski vacua requires the presence of non-geometric fluxes, whereas they are not needed for the AdS vacua. We also argue that our results should hold in the presence of spacetime and worldsheet instanton corrections.

The N=1 Low-Energy Effective Action of Spontaneously Broken N=2 Supergravities

We consider the class of four-dimensional N=2 gauged supergravities whose maximally symmetric ground states leave only one of the two supersymmetries intact. For these theories we derive the low-energy effective action below the scale of partial supersymmetry breaking and compute the N=1 couplings in terms of the N=2 'input data'. We show that this effective action satisfies the constraints of N=1 supergravity in that its sigma-model metric is Kahler, while the superpotential and the gauge kinetic functions are holomorphic. As an example we discuss the N=1 effective supergravity of type II compactifications.

E7(7) formulation of N=2 backgrounds

In this paper we reformulate N=2 supergravity backgrounds arising in type II string theory in terms of quantities transforming under the U-duality group E7(7). In particular we combine the Ramond--Ramond scalar degrees of freedom together with the O(6,6) pure spinors which govern the Neveu-Schwarz sector by considering an extended version of generalised geometry. We give E7(7)-invariant expressions for the Kahler and hyperkahler potentials describing the moduli space of vector and hypermultiplets, demonstrating that both correspond to standard E7(7) coset spaces. We also find E7(7) expressions for the Killing prepotentials defining the scalar potential, and discuss the equations governing N=1 vacua in this formalism.

SU(3) x SU(3) compactification and mirror duals of magnetic fluxes

This paper analyses type II string theories in backgrounds which admit an SU(3) x SU(3) structure. Such backgrounds are designed to linearly realize eight out of the original 32 supercharges and as a consequence the low-energy effective action can be written in terms of couplings which are closely related to the couplings of four-dimensional N=2 theories. This generalizes the previously studied case of SU(3) backgrounds in that the left- and right-moving sector each have a different globally defined spinor. Given a truncation to a finite number of modes, these backgrounds lead to a conventional four-dimensional low-energy effective theory. The results are manifestly mirror symmetric and give terms corresponding to the mirror dual couplings of Calabi-Yau compactifications with magnetic fluxes. It is argued, however, that generically such backgrounds are non-geometric and hence the supergravity analysis is not strictly valid. Remarkably, the naive generalization of the geometrical expressions nonetheless appears to give the correct low-energy effective theory.

Type IIA orientifold compactification on SU(2)-structure manifolds

We investigate the effective theory of type IIA string theory on six-dimensional orientifold backgrounds with SU(2)-structure. We focus on the case of orientifolds with O6-planes, for which we compute the bosonic effective action in the supergravity approximation. For a generic SU(2)-structure background, we find that the low-energy effective theory is a gauged N=2 supergravity where moduli in both vector and hypermultiplets are charged. Since all these supergravities descend from a corresponding N=4 background, their scalar target space is always a quotient of a SU(1,1)/U(1) x SO(6,n)/SO(6)xSO(n) coset, and is therefore also very constrained.

Constraints on modular inflation in supergravity and string theory

We perform a general algebraic analysis on the possibility of realising slow-roll inflation in the moduli sector of string models. This problem turns out to be very closely related to the characterisation of models admitting metastable vacua with non-negative cosmological constant. In fact, we show that the condition for the existence of viable inflationary trajectories is a deformation of the condition for the existence of metastable de Sitter vacua. This condition depends on the ratio between the scale of inflation and the gravitino mass and becomes stronger as this parameter grows. After performing a general study within arbitrary supergravity models, we analyse the implications of our results in several examples. More concretely, in the case of heterotic and orientifold string compactifications on a Calabi-Yau in the large volume limit we show that there may exist fully viable models, allowing both for inflation and stabilisation. Additionally, we show that subleading corrections breaking the no-scale property shared by these models always allow for slow-roll inflation but with an inflationary scale suppressed with respect to the gravitino scale. A scale of inflation larger than the gravitino scale can also be achieved under more restrictive circumstances and only for certain types of compactifications.

N=1 domain wall solutions of massive type II supergravity as generalized geometries

We study N=1 domain wall solutions of type IIB supergravity compactified on a Calabi-Yau manifold in the presence of RR and NS electric and magnetic fluxes. We show that the dynamics of the scalar fields along the direction transverse to the domain wall is described by gradient flow equations controlled by a superpotential W. We then provide a geometrical interpretation of the gradient flow equations in terms of the mirror symmetric compactification of type IIA. They correspond to a set of generalized Hitchin flow equations of a manifold with SU(3)xSU(3)structure which is fibered over the direction transverse to the domain wall.

D-terms and F-terms from D7-brane fluxes

Using a Kaluza-Klein reduction of the fermionic part of the D-brane action we compute D- and F-terms of the N=1 effective action for generic Calabi-Yau orientifold compactifications in the presence of a space-time filling D7-brane. We include non-trivial background fluxes for the D7-brane U(1) field strength on the internal four-cycle wrapped by the brane. First the four-dimensional fermionic spectrum arising from the D7-brane is derived and then the D- and F-terms are obtained by computing appropriate couplings of these fermionic fields. For specific examples we examine the resulting flux-induced scalar potentials and comment on their relevance in string cosmology.

Massive Tensor Multiplets in N=1 Supersymmetry

We derive the action for a massive tensor multiplet coupled to chiral and vector multiplets as it can appear in orientifold compactifications of type IIB string theory. We compute the potential of the theory and show its consistency with the corresponding Kaluza-Klein reduction of N=1 orientifold compactifications. The potential contains an explicit mass term for the scalar in the tensor multiplet which does not arise from eliminating an auxiliary field. A dual action with an additional massive vector multiplet is derived at the level of superfields.

The effective action of N=1 Calabi-Yau orientifolds

We determine the N=1 low energy effective action for compactifications of type IIB string theory on compact Calabi-Yau orientifolds in the presence of background fluxes from a Kaluza-Klein reduction. The analysis is performed for Calabi-Yau threefolds which admit an isometric and holomorphic involution. We explicitly compute the Kahler potential, the superpotential and the gauge kinetic functions and check the consistency with N=1 supergravity. We find a new class of no-scale Kahler potentials and show that their structure can be best understood in terms of a dual formulation where some of the chiral multiplets are replaced by linear multiplets. For O3- and O7-planes the scalar potential is expressed in terms of a superpotential while for O5- and O9-planes also a D-term and a massive linear multiplet can be present. The relation with the associated F-theory compactifications is briefly discussed.

Mirror Symmetry in Generalized Calabi-Yau Compactifications

We discuss mirror symmetry in generalized Calabi-Yau compactifications of type II string theories with background NS fluxes. Starting from type IIB compactified on Calabi-Yau threefolds with NS three-form flux we show that the mirror type IIA theory arises from a purely geometrical compactification on a different class of six-manifolds. These mirror manifolds have SU(3) structure and are termed half-flat; they are neither complex nor Ricci-flat and their holonomy group is no longer SU(3). We show that type IIA appropriately compactified on such manifolds gives the correct mirror-symmetric low-energy effective action.

Supersymmetry Breaking and alpha'-Corrections to Flux Induced Potentials

We obtain the vacuum solutions for M-theory compactified on eight-manifolds with non-vanishing four-form flux by analyzing the scalar potential appearing in the three-dimensional theory. Many of these vacua are not supersymmetric and yet have a vanishing three-dimensional cosmological constant. We show that in the context of Type IIB compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds with fluxes and external brane sources alpha'-corrections generate a correction to the supergravity potential proportional to the Euler number of the internal manifold which spoils the no-scale structure appearing in the classical potential. This indicates that alpha'-corrections may indeed lead to a stabilization of the radial modulus appearing in these compactifications.

Type II Theories Compactified on Calabi-Yau Threefolds in the Presence of Background Fluxes

Compactifications of type II theories on Calabi-Yau threefolds including electric and magnetic background fluxes are discussed. We derive the bosonic part of the four-dimensional low energy effective action and show that it is a non-canonical N=2 supergravity which includes a massive two-form. The symplectic invariance of the theory is maintained as long as the flux parameters transform as a symplectic vector and a massive two-form which couples to both electric and magnetic field strengths is present. The mirror symmetry between type IIA and type IIB compactified on mirror manifolds is shown to hold for R-R fluxes at the level of the effective action. We also compactify type IIA in the presence of NS three-form flux but the mirror symmetry in this case remains unclear.

Massive Type IIA Theory on K3

In this paper we study K3 compactification of ten-dimensional massive type IIA theory with all possible Ramond-Ramond background fluxes turned on. The resulting six-dimensional theory is a new massive (gauged) supergravity with an action that is manifestly invariant under an O(4,20) / (O(4) times O(20)) duality symmetry. We discover that this six-dimensional theory interpolates between vacua of ten-dimensional massive IIA supergravity and vacua of massless IIA supergravity with appropriate background fluxes turned on. This in turn suggests a new 11-dimensional interpretation for the massive type IIA theory.

Domain walls in five dimensional supergravity with non-trivial hypermultiplets

We study BPS domain wall solutions of 5-dimensional N=2 supergravity where isometries of the hypermultiplet geometry have been gauged. As an example we discuss a domain wall solution of Freedman, Gubser, Pilch and Warner which is related to a RG-flow in a dual superconformal field theory.

Type IIA and Heterotic String Vacua in D=2

We study type IIA string theory compactified on Calabi-Yau fourfolds and heterotic string theory compactified on Calabi-Yau threefolds times a two-torus. We derive the resulting effective theories which have two space-time dimensions and preserve four supercharges. The duality between such vacua is established at the level of the effective theory. For type IIA vacua with non-trivial Ramond-Ramond background fluxes a superpotential is generated. We show that for a specific choice of background fluxes and a fourfold which has the structure of a threefold fibred over a sphere the superpotential coincides with the superpotential recently proposed by Taylor and Vafa in compactifications of type IIB string theory on a threefold.

Duality in Heterotic Vacua With Four Supercharges

We study heterotic vacua with four supercharges in three and four space-time dimensions and their duals obtained as M/F-theory compactified on Calabi-Yau fourfolds. We focus on their respective moduli spaces and derive the Kahler potential for heterotic vacua obtained as circle compactifications of four-dimensional N=1 heterotic theories. The Kahler potential of the dual theory is computed by compactifying 11-dimensional supergravity on Calabi-Yau fourfolds. The duality between these theories is checked for K3-fibred fourfolds and an appropriate F-theory limit is discussed.

In particular we focus on S-T-U dualities of toroidally compactified ten-dimensional string theories and outline the connection to M-theory. Dualities among string vacua with less supersymmetries in six and four space-time dimensions is discussed and the concept of F-theory is briefly presented. (Lecture given by J. On Gauge Couplings in String Theory

We investigate the field dependence of the gauge couplings of $N=1$ string vacua from the point of view of the low energy effective quantum field theory. We find that field-theoretical considerations severely constrain the form of the string loop corrections; in particular, the dilaton dependence of the gauge couplings is completely universal at the one-loop level. The moduli dependence of the string threshold corrections is also constrained, and we illustrate the power of such constraints with a detailed discussion of the orbifold vacua and the $(2,2)$ (Calabi-Yau) vacua of the heterotic string.

Some Phenomenological Implications of String Loop Effects

We investigate low energy implications of string loop corrections to supergravity couplings which break a possible flavor universality of the tree level. If Supersymmetry is broken by the dilaton $F$-term, universal soft scalar masses arise at the leading order but string loop corrections generically induce flavor-non-diagonal soft terms. Constraints from flavor changing neutral currents (FCNC) and CP violation then require a large supersymmtery breaking scale and thus heavy gluinos and squarks. If Supersymmetry is broken by moduli $F$-terms, universality at the string tree level can only be guaranteed by extra conditions on the Kähler potential. A large hierarchy between the gluino and squark masses ensures that FCNC and CP violation constraints are satisfied. If the soft scalar masses vanish at the string tree level, the cosmological problems related to light moduli can be evaded. However, generic string loop corrections violate FCNC bounds and require very heavy squark masses ($\approx 100\, TeV$).
