A general method to construct invariant PDEs on homogeneous manifolds

Let $M = G/H$ be an $(n+1)$-dimensional homogeneous manifold and $J^k(n,M)=:J^k$ be the manifold of $k$-jets of hypersurfaces of $M$. The Lie group $G$ acts naturally on each $J^k$. A $G$-invariant PDE of order $k$ for hypersurfaces of $M$ (i.e., with $n$ independent variables and $1$ dependent one) is defined as a $G$-invariant hypersurface $\mathcal{E} \subset J^k$. We describe a general method for constructing such invariant PDEs for $k\geq 2$. The problem reduces to the description of hypersurfaces, in a certain vector space, which are invariant with respect to the linear action of the stability subgroup $H^{(k-1)}$ of the $(k-1)$-prolonged action of $G$. We apply this approach to describe invariant PDEs for hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^{n+1 }$ and in the conformal space $\mathbb{S}^{n+1}$. Our method works under some mild assumptions on the action of $G$, namely: A1) the group $G$ must have an open orbit in $J^{k-1}$, and A2) the stabilizer $H^{(k-1)}\subset G$ of the fibre $J^k\to J^{k-1}$ must factorize via the group of translations of the fibre itself.

Homogeneous models of C3 Monge geometries

Distributions of Monge type are a class of strongly regular bracket-generating distributions introduced by I. Anderson, Zh. Nie and P. Nurowski. Their symbol algebras prolong to simple graded Lie algebras, thus allowing one to associate a parabolic geometry to any given Monge distribution. This article is devoted to the classification problem for homogeneous models of Monge distributions of type C3 in dimension eight, and is complementary to a paper by I. Anderson and P. Nurowski. The general classification algorithm, as well as most of its application to the particular problem, are joint work with Ian Anderson.

Non-signalling boxes and Bohrification

The premise of this note is the following observation: the formalism of Bohrification is a natural place for the interpretation of general non-signalling theories. We demonstrate it through an analysis of so-called box-worlds, a popular framework for the discussion of systems exhibiting super-quantum correlations. In particular, we show that non-signalling box-world states are precisely the internal probability valuations on an internal frame in a Kripke topos naturally associated with a given box world.

Classical simulation of fermionic linear optics augmented with noisy ancillas

Fermionic linear optics is a model of quantum computation which is efficiently simulable on a classical probabilistic computer. We study the problem of a classical simulation of fermionic linear optics augmented with noisy auxiliary states. If the auxiliary state can be expressed as a convex combination of pure Fermionic Gaussian states, the corresponding computation scheme is classically simulable. We present an analytic characterisation of the set of convex-Gaussian states in the first non-trivial case, in which the Hilbert space of the ancilla is a four-mode Fock space. We use our result to solve an open problem recently posed by De Melo et al. and to study in detail the geometrical properties of the set of convex-Gaussian states.

Hwang-Mok rigidity of cominuscule homogeneous varieties in positive characteristic

Jun-Muk Hwang and Ngaiming Mok have proved the rigidity of irreducible Hermitian symmetric spaces of compact type under Kaehler degeneration. I adapt their argument to the algebraic setting in positive characteristic, where cominuscule homogeneous varieties serve as an analogue of Hermitian symmetric spaces. The main result gives an explicit (computable in terms of Schubert calculus) lower bound on the characteristic of the base field, guaranteeing that a smooth projective family with cominuscule homogeneous generic fibre is isotrivial. The bound depends only on the type of the generic fibre, and on the degree of an invertible sheaf whose extension to the special fibre is very ample. An important part of the proof is a characteristic-free analogue of Hwang and Mok's extension theorem for maps of Fano varieties of Picard number 1, a result I believe to be interesting in its own right.
