Dynamical gluon effects in twist-3 generalized parton distributions of the proton

Within the Basis Light-Front Quantization framework, we systematically investigate the subleading-twist (twist-3) generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the proton's valence quarks beyond the Wandzura--Wilczek (WW) approximation. The twist-3 GPDs are not independent; through the equations of motion they decompose into a non-genuine contribution and a genuine twist-3 term. The latter encodes quark--quark--gluon correlations and involves interference between the light-front Fock sectors |qqq> and |qqqg>, which are typically neglected in the WW approximation. Using light-front wave functions obtained from diagonalizing the proton light-front Hamiltonian for its |qqq> and |qqqg> Fock components, we compute these GPDs via their overlap representations. To further explore their physical implications, we also evaluate several twist-3--related quantities, including the quark orbital angular momentum, the total quark spin contribution, and the quark spin--orbit correlation. Our results provide new nonperturbative input on higher-twist dynamics particularly multi-parton interference effects relevant for future measurements at the EicC and the EIC.

Halo structure of $^6$He from $\textit{ab initio}$ two-nucleon spatial correlations

We evaluate pairwise correlations using ground state wave functions for $^4$He and $^6$He obtained by $\textit{ab initio}$ no-core shell model (NCSM) calculations with the Daejeon16 nucleon-nucleon interaction plus Coulomb interaction, to characterize the structures of these two systems. We demonstrate that two-nucleon spatial correlations, specifically the pair-number operator $r^0$ and the square-separation operator $r^2$ projected on two-body spin $S$ and isospin $z$-components encode important details of the halo structure of $^6$He. We also analyze the single-particle state occupancies and the two-body state occupancies for the ground state of $^4$He and $^6$He. Our results indicate that the two valence neutrons in the ground state of $^6$He dominantly form a spin-singlet configuration. The rms pair separations between core nucleons and halo neutrons of $^6$He is about 80% larger than pair separations within the swollen and off-centered "$α$ core". We show that this off-centering effect is primarily responsible for the observed increase in point-proton radius $r_p$ in $^6$He relative to $^4$He.

Quark and gluon distributions in $ρ$-meson from basis light-front quantization

We solve for the $ρ$-meson's wave functions from a light-front QCD Hamiltonian determined for its constituent quark-antiquark and quark-antiquark-gluon Fock components, with a three-dimensional confinement using basis light-front quantization. From this, we obtain the leading-twist valence quark's parton distribution functions and transverse momentum-dependent parton distributions inside the $ρ$-meson. These results are qualitatively consistent with those of other models. We also demonstrate the important effects of a dynamical gluon on the $ρ$-meson's gluon densities, helicity, transversity, and tensor polarized distributions.

Twist-3 Generalized Parton Distribution for the Proton from Basis Light-Front Quantization

We investigate the twist-3 generalized parton distributions (GPDs) for the valence quarks of the proton within the basis light-front quantization (BLFQ) framework. We first solve for the mass spectra and light-front waved functions (LFWFs) in the leading Fock sector using an effective Hamiltonian. Using the LFWFs we then calculate the twist-3 GPDs via the overlap representation. By taking the forward limit, we also get the twist-3 parton distribution functions (PDFs), and discuss their properties. Our prediction for the twist-3 scalar PDF agrees well with the CLAS experimental extractions.

All-charm tetraquark in front form dynamics

We study all-charm tetraquarks in the front form of Hamiltonian dynamics using the many-body basis function approach known as basis light-front quantization. The model Hamiltonian contains transverse and longitudinal confining potentials and a one-gluon-exchange effective potential. We calculate masses of two-charm-two-anticharm states focusing on the lowest state. We also calculate two-quark and four-quark estimates of meson-meson breakup threshold. The results suggest that the lowest two-charm-two-anticharm state is not a tightly bound tetraquark. We discuss implications of the cluster decomposition principle for theories formulated on the light front and present our treatment of identical particles together with color-singlet restrictions on the space of quantum states.

Angular momentum and generalized parton distributions for the proton with basis light-front quantization

We study the unpolarized and the helicity dependent generalized parton distributions (GPDs) for the valence quarks of the proton in both momentum space and position space within the basis light-front quantization (BLFQ) framework. The GPDs for the valence quarks are computed from the eigenvectors of a light-front effective Hamiltonian in the valence Fock sector consisting of a three-dimensional confinement potential and a one-gluon exchange interaction with fixed coupling. Employing these GPDs, we obtain the spatial distributions of quark angular momentum inside the proton. In our BLFQ approach, we explore various definitions of angular momentum density and illustrate the differences between them arising from terms that integrate to zero. We also discuss the flavor contributions to the quark angular momentum densities.

Basis light-front quantization approach to photon

We solve for the light-front wave functions (LFWFs) of the physical photon from the eigenvectors of the light-front quantum electrodynamics (QED) Hamiltonian with the aim to determine its bare photon and electron-positron Fock components. We then employ the resulting LFWFs to compute the transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) and the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the photon. The TMDs are found to be in excellent agreement with the lowest-order perturbative results calculated using the electron-positron quantum fluctuation of the photon. The GPDs are also consistent with the perturbative calculations.

Critical Coupling for Two-dimensional $ϕ^4$ Theory in Discretized Light-Cone Quantization

We solve for the critical coupling in the symmetric phase of two-dimensional $ϕ^4$ field theory using Discretized Light-Cone Quantization. We adopt periodic boundary conditions, neglect the zero mode, and obtain a critical coupling consistent with the critical coupling reported using conformal truncation in light-front quantization. We find a 17% dfference from the critical coupling reported with light-front quantization in a symmetric polynomial basis.

Light mesons with one dynamical gluon on the light front

We obtain the light meson mass spectroscopy from the light-front quantum chromodynamics (QCD) Hamiltonian, determined for their constituent quark-antiquark and quark-antiquark-gluon Fock components, together with a three-dimensional confinement. The eigenvectors of the light-front effective Hamiltonian provide a good quality description of the pion electromagnetic form factor, decay constant, and the valence quark distribution functions following QCD scale evolution. We also show that the pion's gluon densities can be probed through the pion-nucleus induced $J/ψ$ production data. Our pion parton distribution functions provide excellent agreement with $J/ψ$ production data from widely different experimental conditions.

We investigate the structure of the light meson with one dynamical gluon from the light-front QCD Hamiltonian, determined for their constituent quark-antiquark and quark-antiquark-gluon Fock sectors, together with a three-dimensional confinement. After fitting the light meson mass spectroscopy, the light-front wave functions provide a good quality description of the pion electromagnetic form factor, and the valence quark distribution functions following QCD scale evolution.

Light-front holography with chiral symmetry breaking

We present an analytically solvable 3D light-front Hamiltonian model for hadrons that extends light-front holography by including finite mass quarks and a longitudinal confinement term. We propose that the model is suitable as an improved analytic approximation to QCD at a low resolution scale. We demonstrate that it preserves desired Lorentz symmetries and it produces improved agreement with the experimental mass spectroscopy and other properties of the light mesons. Importantly, the model also respects chiral symmetry and the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation.

Natural orbitals for the ab initio no-core configuration interaction approach

Ab initio no-core configuration interaction (NCCI) calculations for the nuclear many-body problem have traditionally relied upon an antisymmetrized product (Slater determinant) basis built from harmonic oscillator orbitals. The accuracy of such calculations is limited by the finite dimensions which are computationally feasible for the truncated many-body space. We therefore seek to improve the accuracy obtained for a given basis size by optimizing the choice of single-particle orbitals. Natural orbitals, which diagonalize the one-body density matrix, provide a basis which maximizes the occupation of low-lying orbitals, thus accelerating convergence in a configuration-interaction basis, while also possibly providing physical insight into the single-particle structure of the many-body wave function. We describe the implementation of natural orbitals in the NCCI framework, and examine the nature of the natural orbitals thus obtained, the properties of the resulting many-body wave functions, and the convergence of observables. After taking $^3\mathrm{He}$ as an illustrative testbed, we explore aspects of NCCI calculations with natural orbitals for the ground state of the $p$-shell neutron halo nucleus $^6\mathrm{He}$.

Solving hadron structures using the basis light-front quantization approach on quantum computers

Quantum computing has demonstrated the potential to revolutionize our understanding of nuclear, atomic, and molecular structure by obtaining forefront solutions in non-relativistic quantum many-body theory. In this work, we show that quantum computing can be used to solve for the structure of hadrons, governed by strongly-interacting relativistic quantum field theory. Following our previous work on light unflavored mesons as a relativistic bound-state problem within the nonperturbative Hamiltonian formalism, we present the numerical calculations on simulated quantum devices using the basis light-front quantization (BLFQ) approach. We implement and compare the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) and the subspace-search variational quantum eigensolver (SSVQE) to find the low-lying mass spectrum of the light meson system and its corresponding light-front wave functions as quantum states from ideal simulators, noisy simulators, and IBM quantum computers. Based on obtained quantum states, we evaluate the meson decay constants and parton distribution functions directly on the quantum circuits. Our calculations on the quantum computers and simulators are in reasonable agreement with accurate numerical solutions solved on classical computers when noises are moderately small, and our overall results are comparable with the available experimental data.

Transverse momentum structure of proton within the basis light-front quantization framework

We obtain the leading-twist valence quark transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMD PDFs) for the proton within the basis light-front quantization (BLFQ) framework. Our results are consistent with lattice QCD calculations and our previous results for the collinear limit. We also obtain consistency with the Soffer-type bounds. Within our approach, we find that six T-even TMDs in the leading twist are all independent of each other, and previously found model-dependent relations do not hold. This is a promising sign that our results are representative of future, more extensive treatments of QCD. Furthermore, we obtain a non-trivial $ x $-dependence of the $ \left<(p^\perp)^2\right> $ and some consistency with the Gaussian ansatz but only in the small $ (p^\perp)^2 $ region. Those features suggest our results may be a useful alternative in future experimental extractions.

Two-photon transitions of charmonia on the light front

We investigate the two-photon transitions $H_{c\bar c} \to γ^*γ$ of the charmonium system in light-front dynamics. The light-front wave functions were obtained from solving the effective Hamiltonian based on light-front holography and one-gluon exchange interaction within the basis light-front quantization approach. We compute the two-photon transition form factors as well as the two-photon decay widths for S- and P-wave charmonia, $η_c$ and $χ_{cJ}$ and their excitations. Without introducing any free parameters, our predictions are in good agreement with the recent experimental measurements by BaBar and Belle, shedding light on the relativistic nature of charmonium.

Heavy-Light Mesons on the Light Front

We study the heavy-light mesons within basis light-front quantization. The resulting mass spectra of $D$, $D_s$, $B$, and $B_s$ agree reasonably well with experiments. We also predict states which could be measured in the near future. In the light-front formalism, we calculate the light-front wave functions and additional experimental observables, such as parton distribution functions, distribution amplitudes, and decay constants by means of integrations over light-front wave functions. We also provide ratios of decay constants for selected pseudoscalar meson decays ($D_s$ to $D$ and $B_s$ to $B$) as they may prove to be theoretically more robust and more reliably determined in experiments. We find that our ratios are systematically smaller than existing experiment and other approaches by $5-18\%$.

Light Meson Parton Distribution Functions from Basis Light-Front Quantization and QCD Evolution

We investigate the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the pion and kaon from the eigenstates of a light-front effective Hamiltonian in the constituent quark-antiquark representation suitable for low-momentum scale applications. By taking these scales as the only free parameters, the valence quark distribution functions of the pion, after QCD evolving, are consistent with the E615 experiment at Fermilab. In addition, the ratio of the up quark distribution in the kaon to that in the pion also agrees with the NA3 experimental result at CERN.

Nucleon form factors from basis light front quantization

We investigate the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon in the framework of basis light front quantization. We compute the form factors using the light front wavefunctions obtained by diagonalizing the effective Hamiltonian consisting of the holographic QCD confinement potential, the longitudinal confinement, and a one-gluon exchange interaction with fixed coupling. The electromagnetic radii of the nucleon are also computed.

Parton Distribution Functions of Heavy Mesons on the Light Front

The parton distribution functions (PDFs) of heavy mesons are evaluated from their light-front wave functions, which are obtained from a basis light-front quantization in the leading Fock sector representation. We consider the mass eigenstates from an effective Hamiltonian consisting of the confining potential adopted from light-front holography in the transverse direction, a longitudinal confinement, and a one-gluon exchange interaction with running coupling. We present the gluon and the sea quark PDFs which we generate dynamically from the QCD evolution of the valence quark distributions.

Pion and kaon parton distribution functions from basis light front quantization and QCD evolution

We investigate the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the pion and the kaon by combining quantum chromodynamics (QCD) evolution with the basis light front quantization. The initial PDFs result from the light front wave functions obtained by diagonalizing the effective Hamiltonian consisting of the holographic QCD confinement potential, a complementary longitudinal confinement potential, and the color-singlet Nambu--Jona-Lasinio interactions. The valence-quark PDF of the pion, after QCD evolution, is consistent with the result from the E-0615 experiment at Fermilab. Meanwhile, the pion structure function calculated from the PDFs agrees with the ZEUS and the H1 experiments at DESY-HERA for large $x$. Additionally, the ratio of the up quark PDF of the kaon to that of the pion is in agreement with the NA-003 experiment at CERN. We also present the cross section for the pion-nucleus induced Drell-Yan process with the obtained pion PDFs supplemented by the PDFs of the target nuclei.

Positronium on the light front

Basis Light-front Quantization (BLFQ) is a newly developed nonperturbative approach, aiming at solving relativistic bound systems based on the Hamiltonian formalism of light-front dynamics. In this work, we introduce its application to the positronium system at strong coupling, $α= 0.3$, with a dynamical photon mediating the interaction between the positron and the electron. Nonperturbative mass renormalization is needed to cancel the fermion self-energy divergence. Here, we present the resulting mass spectrum, light-front wave functions (LFWFs), and the photon distribution inside positronium.

Basis Light-front Quantization (BLFQ) is a nonperturbative approach to quantum field theory. In this paper, we report our recent progress in applying BLFQ to the positronium system in QED and to the meson and the baryon system in QCD. We present preliminary results on the mass spectrum, light-front wave functions and other observables of these systems, where one dynamical gauge boson is retained for the positronium and meson systems.

Three Dimensional Imaging of Proton in Basis Light-Front Quantization

We employ an effective Hamiltonian that includes the transverse and longitudinal confinement and the one-gluon exchange interaction with fixed coupling constant. By solving the eigenvalue equation in basis light-front quantization (BLFQ), we generate the light-front wavefunctions (LFWFs) for the nucleon in the valence quark Fock space. Fitting the model parameters, we obtain high-quality descriptions of electromagnetic form factors and radius for proton while the results deviate somewhat from experimental data for neutron.

Transverse structure of electron in momentum space in basis light-front quantization

We investigate the leading-twist transverse momentum-dependent distribution functions (TMDs) for a physical electron, a spin-1/2 composite system consisting of a bare electron and a photon, using the Basis Light-front Quantization (BLFQ) framework. The light-front wave functions of the physical electron are obtained from the eigenvectors of the light-front QED Hamiltonian. We evaluate the TMDs using the overlaps of the light-front wave functions. The BLFQ results are found to be in excellent agreement with those TMDs calculated using lowest-order perturbation theory.

Ultrarelativistic quark-nucleus scattering in a light-front Hamiltonian approach

We investigate the scattering of a quark on a heavy nucleus at high energies using the time-dependent basis light-front quantization (tBLFQ) formalism, which is the first application of the tBLFQ formalism in QCD. We present the real-time evolution of the quark wave function in a strong classical color field of the relativistic nucleus, described as the Color Glass Condensate. The quark and the nucleus color field are simulated in the QCD SU(3) color space. We calculate the total and the differential cross sections, and the quark distribution in coordinate and color spaces using the tBLFQ approach. We recover the eikonal cross sections in the eikonal limit. We find that the differential cross section from the tBLFQ simulation is in agreement with a perturbative calculation at large $p_\perp$, and it deviates from the perturbative calculation at small $p_\perp$ due to higher-order contributions. In particular, we relax the eikonal limit by letting the quark carry realistic finite longitudinal momenta. We study the sub-eikonal effect on the quark through the transverse coordinate distribution of the quark with different longitudinal momentum, and we find the sub-eikonal effect to be sizable. Our results can significantly reduce the theoretical uncertainties in small $p_\perp$ region which has important implications to the phenomenology of the hadron-nucleus and deep inelastic scattering at high energies.

Basis Light-Front Quantization for a Chiral Nucleon-Pion Lagrangian

We present the first application of the Basis Light-Front Quantization method to a simple chiral model of the nucleon-pion system as a relativistic bound state for the physical proton. The light-front mass-squared matrix of the nucleon-pion system is obtained within a truncated basis. The mass and the corresponding light-front wave function (LFWF) of the proton are computed by numerical diagonalization of the resulting mass-squared matrix. With the boost invariant LFWF, we calculate the probability density distribution of the pion's longitudinal momentum fraction and the Dirac form factor of the proton.

Proton structure from a light-front Hamiltonian

We obtain the electromagnetic form factors, the axial form factor, and the parton distribution functions of the proton from the eigenstates of a light-front effective Hamiltonian in the leading Fock representation suitable for low-momentum scale applications. The electromagnetic and the axial form factors are found to be in agreement with the available experimental data. The unpolarized, the helicity, and the transversity valence quark distributions, after QCD evolution, are consistent with the global QCD analyses. The tensor charge also agree the experimental data, while the axial charge is somewhat outside the experimental error bar.

Quarkonium as relativistic bound state on the light front

We study charmonium and bottomonium as relativistic bound states in a light-front quantized Hamiltonian formalism. The effective Hamiltonian is based on light-front holography. We use a recently proposed longitudinal confinement to complete the soft-wall holographic potential for the heavy flavors. The spin structure is generated from the one-gluon exchange interaction with a running coupling. The adoption of asymptotic freedom improves the spectroscopy compared with previous light-front results. Within this model, we compute the mass spectroscopy, decay constants and the r.m.s. radii. We also present a detailed study of the obtained light-front wave functions and use the wave functions to compute the light-cone distributions, specifically the distribution amplitudes and parton distribution functions. Overall, our model provides a reasonable description of the heavy quarkonia.

Form Factors and Generalized Parton Distributions in Basis Light-Front Quantization

We calculate the elastic form factors and the Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) for four low-lying bound states of a demonstration fermion-antifermion system, strong coupling positronium ($e \bar{e}$), using Basis Light-Front Quantization (BLFQ). Using this approach, we also calculate the impact-parameter dependent GPDs $q(x, {\vec b_\perp})$ to visualize the fermion density in the transverse plane (${\vec b_\perp}$). We compare selected results with corresponding quantities in the non-relativistic limit to reveal relativistic effects. Our results establish the foundation within BLFQ for investigating the form factors and the GPDs for hadronic systems.

We adopt the holographic light-front wavefunction (LFWF) as our basis function and solve the non-perturbative dynamics by diagonalizing the Hamiltonian matrix. We obtain the mass spectrum for charmonium and bottomonium. With the obtained LFWFs, we also compute the decay constants and the charge form factors for selected eigenstates. The results are compared with the experimental measurements and with other established methods.

Nonperturbative solution of scalar Yukawa model in two- and three-body Fock space truncations

The Light-Front Tamm-Dancoff method of finding the nonperturbative solutions in field theory is based on the Fock decomposition of the state vector, complemented with the sector-dependent nonperturbative renormalization scheme. We show in detail how to implement the renormalization procedure and to solve the simplest nontrivial example of the scalar Yukawa model in the two- and three-body Fock space truncations incorporating scalar "nucleon" and one or two scalar "pions".

Ab Initio No Core Shell Model - Recent Results and Further Prospects

There has been significant recent progress in solving the long-standing problems of how nuclear shell structure and collective motion emerge from underlying microscopic inter-nucleon interactions. We review a selection of recent significant results within the ab initio No Core Shell Model (NCSM) closely tied to three major factors enabling this progress: (1) improved nuclear interactions that accurately describe the experimental two-nucleon and three-nucleon interaction data; (2) advances in algorithms to simulate the quantum many-body problem with strong interactions; and (3) continued rapid development of high-performance computers now capable of performing $20 \times 10^{15}$ floating point operations per second. We also comment on prospects for further developments.

Basis Light-Front Quantization Approach to Positronium

We present the first application of the recently developed Basis Light-Front Quantization (BLFQ) method to self-bound systems in quantum field theory, using the positronium system as a test case. Within the BLFQ framework, we develop a two-body effective interaction, operating only in the lowest Fock sector, that implements photon exchange, neglecting fermion self-energy effects. We then solve for the mass spectrum of this interaction at the unphysical coupling $α=0.3$. The resulting spectrum is in good agreement with the expected Bohr spectrum of non-relativistic quantum mechanics. We examine in detail the dependence of the results on the regulators of the theory.

Hamiltonian, Path Integral and BRST Formulations of Large N Scalar $QCD_{2}$ on the Light-Front and Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking

Recently Grinstein, Jora, and Polosa have studied a theory of large-$N$ scalar quantum chromodynamics in one-space one-time dimension. This theory admits a Bethe-Salpeter equation describing the discrete spectrum of quark-antiquark bound states. They consider gauge fields in the adjoint representation of $SU(N)$ and scalar fields in the fundamental representation. The theory is asymptotically free and linearly confining. The theory could possibly provide a good field theoretic framework for the description of a large class of diquark-antidiquark (tetra-quark) states. Recently we have studied the light-front quantization of this theory without a Higgs potential. In the present work, we study the light-front Hamiltonian, path integral and BRST formulations of the theory in the presence of a Higgs potential. The light-front theory is seen to be gauge-invariant, possessing a set of first-class constraints. The explicit occurrence of spontaneous symmetry breaking in the theory is shown in unitary gauge as well as in the light-front 't Hooft gauge.

Non-perturbative Calculation of the Positronium Mass Spectrum in Basis Light-Front Quantization

We report on recent improvements to our non-perturbative calculation of the positronium spectrum. Our Hamiltonian is a two-body effective interaction which incorporates one-photon exchange terms, but neglects fermion self-energy effects. This effective Hamiltonian is diagonalized numerically in a harmonic oscillator basis at strong coupling ($α=0.3$) to obtain the mass eigenvalues. We find that the mass spectrum compares favorably to the Bohr spectrum of non-relativistic quantum mechanics evaluated at this unphysical coupling.

Non-Perturbative Calculation of the Scalar Yukawa Theory in Four-Body Truncation

The quenched scalar Yukawa theory is solved in the light-front Tamm-Dancoff approach including up to four constituents (one scalar nucleon, three scalar pions). The Fock sector dependent renormalization is implemented. By studying the Fock sector norms, we find that the lowest two Fock sectors dominate the state even in the large-coupling region. The one-body sector shows convergence with respect to the Fock sector truncation. However, the four-body norm exceeds the three-body norm at the coupling $α\approx 1.7$.

Applications of Basis Light-Front Quantization to QED

Hamiltonian light-front quantum field theory provides a framework for calculating both static and dynamic properties of strongly interacting relativistic systems. Invariant masses, correlated parton amplitudes and time-dependent scattering amplitudes, possibly with strong external time-dependent fields, represent a few of the important applications. By choosing the light-front gauge and adopting an orthonormal basis function representation, we obtain a large, sparse, Hamiltonian matrix eigenvalue problem for mass eigenstates that we solve by adapting ab initio no-core methods of nuclear many-body theory. In the continuum limit, the infinite matrix limit, we recover full covariance. Guided by the symmetries of light-front quantized theory, we adopt a two-dimensional harmonic oscillator basis for transverse modes that corresponds with eigensolutions of the soft-wall anti-de Sitter/quantum chromodynamics (AdS/QCD) model obtained from light-front holography. We outline our approach and present results for non-linear Compton scattering, evaluated non-perturbatively, where a strong and time-dependent laser field accelerates the electron and produces states of higher invariant mass i.e. final states with photon emission.

Introduction to Basis Light-Front Quantization Approach to QCD Bound State Problems

Basis Light-Front Quantized Field Theory (BLFQ) is an $\textit{ab intio}$ Hamiltonian approach that adopts light-cone gauge, light-front quantization and state-of-the-art many-body methods to solve non-perturbative quantum field theory problems. By a suitable choice of basis, BLFQ retains the underlying symmetries to the extent allowed within light-front coordinates. In this talk, we outline the scheme for applying BLFQ to QCD bound state problems. We adopt a 2D Harmonic Oscillator with 1D plane wave basis that corresponds to the AdS/QCD soft-wall solution. Exact treatment of the symmetries will be discussed.

Non-perturbative quantum time evolution on the light-front

This paper introduces "time-dependent basis light-front quantization", which is a covariant, nonperturbative, and first principles numerical approach to time-dependent problems in quantum field theory. We demonstrate this approach by evaluating photon emission from an electron in a strong, time and space dependent external field. We study the acceleration of the electron in combination with the evolution of the invariant mass of the electron-photon system, in real time and at the amplitude level. Successive excitations of the electron-photon system are evident.

Non-Perturbative Time-Dependent Quantum Field Evolution

We present a nonperturbative, first-principles numerical approach for time-dependent problems in the framework of quantum field theory. In this approach the time evolution of quantum field systems is treated in real time and at the amplitude level. As a test application, we apply this method to QED and study photon emission from an electron in a strong, time-dependent external field. Coherent superposition of electron acceleration and photon emission is observed in the nonperturbative regime.

In this approach, the time-evolution of quantum field configurations is calculated in real time and at the amplitude level. This method is particularly suitable for treating systems interacting with a time-dependent background field. As a test problem, we apply this approach to QED and study electron acceleration and the associated photon emission in a time- and space-dependent electromagnetic background field.

Properties of trapped neutrons interacting with realistic nuclear Hamiltonians

We calculate properties of neutron drops in external potentials using both quantum Monte Carlo and no-core full configuration techniques. The properties of the external wells are varied to examine different density profiles. We compare neutron drop results given by a selection of nuclear Hamiltonians, including realistic two-body interactions as well as several three-body forces. We compute a range of properties for the neutron drops: ground-state energies, spin-orbit splittings, excitation energies, radial densities and rms radii. We compare the equations of state for neutron matter for several of these Hamiltonians. Our results can be used as benchmarks to test other many-body techniques, and to constrain properties of energy-density functionals.

Scattering in Time-Dependent Basis Light-Front Quantization

We introduce a nonperturbative, first principles numerical approach for solving time-dependent problems in quantum field theory, using light-front quantization. As a first application we consider QED in a strong background field, and the process of non-linear Compton scattering in which an electron is excited by the background and emits a photon. We track the evolution of the quantum state as a function of time. Observables, such as the invariant mass of the electron-photon pair, are first checked against results from perturbation theory, for suitable parameters. We then proceed to a test case in the strong background field regime and discuss the various nonperturbative effects revealed by the approach.

Convergence properties of {\itshape ab initio} calculations of light nuclei in a harmonic oscillator basis

We study recently proposed ultraviolet and infrared momentum regulators of the model spaces formed by construction of a variational trial wavefunction which uses a complete set of many-body basis states based upon three-dimensional harmonic oscillator (HO) functions. These model spaces are defined by a truncation of the expansion characterized by a counting number ($\mathcal{N}$) and by the intrinsic scale ($\hbarω$) of the HO basis; in short by the ordered pair ($\mathcal{N},\hbarω$). In this study we choose for $\mathcal{N}$ the truncation parameter $N_{max}$ related to the maximum number of oscillator quanta, above the minimum configuration, kept in the model space. The ultraviolet (uv) momentum cutoff of the continuum is readily mapped onto a defined uv cutoff in this finite model space, but there are two proposed definitions of the infrared (ir) momentum cutoff inherent in a finite-dimensional HO basis. One definition is based upon the lowest momentum difference given by $\hbarω$ itself and the other upon the infrared momentum which corresponds to the maximal radial extent used to encompass the many-body system in coordinate space. Extending both the uv cutoff to infinity and the ir cutoff to zero is prescribed for a converged calculation. We calculate the ground state energy of light nuclei with "bare" and "soft" $NN$ interactions. By doing so, we investigate the behaviors of the uv and ir regulators of model spaces used to describe $^2$H, $^3$H, $^4$He and $^6$He with $NN$ potentials Idaho N$^3$LO and JISP16. We establish practical procedures which utilize these regulators to obtain the extrapolated result from sequences of calculations with model spaces characterized by ($\mathcal{N},\hbarω$).

Lithium isotopes within the ab intio no-core full configuration approach

We perform no-core full configuration calculations for the Lithium isotopes, 6Li, 7Li, and 8Li with the realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction JISP16. We obtain a set of observables, such as spectra, radii, multipole moments, transition rates, etc., and compare with experiment where available. We also present one-body density distributions for selected states. Convergence properties of these density distributions shed light on the convergence properties of one-body observables. We obtain underbinding by 0.5 MeV, 0.7 MeV, and 1.0 MeV for 6Li, 7Li, 8Li respectively. Magnetic moments are well-converged and agree with experiment to within 20%.

Structure of A = 7 - 8 nuclei with two- plus three-nucleon interactions from chiral effective field theory

We solve the ab initio no-core shell model (NCSM) in the complete Nmax = 8 basis for A = 7 and A = 8 nuclei with two-nucleon and three-nucleon interactions derived within chiral effective field theory (EFT). We find that including the chiral EFT three-nucleon interaction in the Hamiltonian improves overall good agreement with experimental binding energies, excitation spectra, transitions and electromagnetic moments. We predict states that exhibit sensitivity to including the chiral EFT three-nucleon interaction but are not yet known experimentally.

Boundary between Hadron and Quark/Gluon Structure of Nuclei

We show that the boundary between quark-dominated and hadron-dominated regions of nuclear structure may be blurred by multi-nucleon quark clusters arising from color percolation. Recent experiments supporting partial percolation in cold nuclei and full percolation in hot/dense nuclear matter include: deep inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering, relativistic heavy-ion collisions and the binding energy in $^5 He_Λ$.

Electron Anomalous Magnetic Moment in Basis Light-Front Quantization Approach

We apply the Basis Light-Front Quantization (BLFQ) approach to the Hamiltonian field theory of Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) in free space. We solve for the mass eigenstates corresponding to an electron interacting with a single photon in light-front gauge. Based on the resulting non-perturbative ground state light-front amplitude we evaluate the electron anomalous magnetic moment. The numerical results from extrapolating to the infinite basis limit reproduce the perturbative Schwinger result with relative deviation less than 0.6%. We report significant improvements over previous works including the development of analytic methods for evaluating the vertex matrix elements of QED.

Hamiltonian Light-Front Field Theory: Recent Progress and Tantalizing Prospects

Fundamental theories, such as Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) and Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) promise great predictive power addressing phenomena over vast scales from the microscopic to cosmic scales. However, new non-perturbative tools are required for physics to span from one scale to the next. I outline recent theoretical and computational progress to build these bridges and provide illustrative results for Hamiltonian Light Front Field Theory. One key area is our development of basis function approaches that cast the theory as a Hamiltonian matrix problem while preserving a maximal set of symmetries. Regulating the theory with an external field that can be removed to obtain the continuum limit offers additional possibilities as seen in an application to the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron. Recent progress capitalizes on algorithm and computer developments for setting up and solving very large sparse matrix eigenvalue problems. Matrices with dimensions of 20 billion basis states are now solved on leadership-class computers for their low-lying eigenstates and eigenfunctions.

Nucleon-Nucleon Scattering in a Harmonic Potential

The discrete energy-eigenvalues of two nucleons interacting with a finite-range nuclear force and confined to a harmonic potential are used to numerically reconstruct the free-space scattering phase shifts. The extracted phase shifts are compared to those obtained from the exact continuum scattering solution and agree within the uncertainties of the calculations. Our results suggest that it might be possible to determine the amplitudes for the scattering of complex systems, such as n-d, n-t or n-alpha, from the energy-eigenvalues confined to finite volumes using ab-initio bound-state techniques.

{\it Ab initio} nuclear structure - the large sparse matrix eigenvalue problem

The structure and reactions of light nuclei represent fundamental and formidable challenges for microscopic theory based on realistic strong interaction potentials. Several {\it ab initio} methods have now emerged that provide nearly exact solutions for some nuclear properties. The {\it ab initio} no core shell model (NCSM) and the no core full configuration (NCFC) method, frame this quantum many-particle problem as a large sparse matrix eigenvalue problem where one evaluates the Hamiltonian matrix in a basis space consisting of many-fermion Slater determinants and then solves for a set of the lowest eigenvalues and their associated eigenvectors. The resulting eigenvectors are employed to evaluate a set of experimental quantities to test the underlying potential. For fundamental problems of interest, the matrix dimension often exceeds $10^{10}$ and the number of nonzero matrix elements may saturate available storage on present-day leadership class facilities. We survey recent results and advances in solving this large sparse matrix eigenvalue problem. W also outline the challenges that lie ahead for achieving further breakthroughs in fundamental nuclear theory using these {\it ab initio} approaches.

J/$ψ$ production and suppression in nuclear collisions

In terms of a new QCD factorization formula for J/$ψ$ production, we calculate the J/$ψ$ suppression in nuclear collisions by including the multiple scattering between the pre-J/$ψ$ partonic states and the nuclear medium. We find agreement with all data on J/$ψ$ suppression in hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions, except a couple of points (the ``second drop'') at the highest $E_T$ bins of the new NA50 data.

Twist Four Longitudinal Structure Function in Light-Front QCD

To resolve various outstanding issues associated with the twist four longitudinal structure function ${F_L^{τ=4}(x)}$ we perform an analysis based on the BJL expansion for the forward virtual photon-hadron Compton scattering amplitude and equal (light-front) time current algebra. Using the Fock space expansion for states and operators, we evaluate the twist four longitudinal structure function for dressed quark and gluon targets in perturbation theory. With the help of a new sum rule which we have derived recently we show that the quadratic and logarithmic divergences generated in the bare theory are related to corresponding mass shifts in old-fashioned light-front perturbation theory. We present numerical results for the $F_2$ and $F_L$ structure functions for the meson in two-dimensional QCD in the one pair approximation. We discuss the relevance of our results for the problem of the partitioning of hadron mass in QCD.
