Black holes to white holes I. A complete quasi-classical model

This is the first of two papers presenting different versions of quasi-classical toy models for the non-singular evolution of the geometry and the associated effective stress-energy tensor for a spherically symmetric black hole that evolves into a white hole and eventually disappears after evaporating down to the Planck scale. The ansatz for the geometry is inspired by calculations of the semi-classical stress-energy tensor in the Schwarzschild background and ideas from loop quantum gravity for a nonsingular transition to the white hole. In this paper the main emphasis is on the evolution of the black hole, and the evolution of the white hole is assumed to be essentially the time reverse of that of the black hole. The negative energy of the Hawking "partners" flows out of the white hole to future null infinity. The white hole disappears when the matter and radiation that collapsed to form the black hole emerges. I discuss the compatibility of the model with some of the quantum energy conditions proposed in the literature, and, briefly, the implications for the interpretation of black hole entropy. The second paper considers how the evolution of the white hole can be modified to avoid prolonged emission of negative energy.

Black holes to white holes II: quasi-classical scenarios for white hole evolution

This paper considers a wider range of "quasi-classical" models for the non-singular transition from an evaporating black hole to a white hole and the evolution of the white hole than were considered in Paper I. The quantum evolution of the geometry outside a collapsing shell is described by a smoothly evolving spherically symmetric effective metric, with a transition from trapped surfaces in the black hole to anti-trapped surfaces in the white hole at a spacelike hypersurface on which the circumferential radius has a minimum Planck-scale value. Rather than focusing on a specific model for the effective metric and the corresponding effective stress-energy tensor, I consider the general properties of such a transition and the end of the black hole following from the assumption of a smooth geometry. Alternative scenarios for the evolution of the white hole, which avoid the prolonged emission of negative energy from the white hole of the Paper I scenario, are explored. If such a transition, suggested by Loop Quantum Gravity, can be firmly established, the conventional holographic interpretation of the fine-grained entropy of a black hole must be abandoned. It would also be a counter-example to the generalized second law and quantum singularity theorems.

Black hole evaporation without an event horizon

A reformulation of the calculation of the semi-classical energy-momentum tensor on a Schwarzschild background, the Bousso covariant entropy bound, and the ER=EPR conjecture of Maldacena and Susskind taken together suggest a scenario for the evaporation of a large spherically symmetric black hole formed in gravitational collapse in which 1) the classical r = 0 singularity is replaced by an initially small non-singular core inside an inner apparent horizon, 2) the radius of the core grows with time due to the increasing entanglement between Hawking radiation quanta outside the black hole and the Hawking partner quanta in the core contributing to the quantum back-reaction, and 3) by the Page time the trapped surfaces disappear and all quantum information stored in the interior is free to escape. The scenario preserves unitarity without any need for a "firewall" in the vicinity of the outer apparent horizon. Qbits in the Hawking radiation are never mutually entangled, and their number never exceeds the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the black hole. The quantum back-reaction, while it must be very large in the deep interior of the black hole, can be described semi-classically in the vicinity of the outer apparent horizon up until close to the Page time. An explicit toy model for the metric in the interior of the black hole, and how its associated energy-momentum tensor can be continued to the exterior in a semi-classical approximation, is discussed.

Bondi-Sachs Energy-Momentum for the CMC Initial Value Problem

The constraints on the asymptotic behavior of the conformal factor and conformal extrinsic curvature imposed by the initial value equations of general relativity on constant mean extrinsic curvature (CMC) hypersurfaces are analyzed in detail. We derive explicit formulas for the Bondi-Sachs energy and momentum in terms of coefficients of asymptotic expansions on CMC hypersurfaces near future null infinity. Precise numerical results for the Bondi-Sachs energy, momentum, and angular momentum are used to interpret physically Bowen-York solutions of the initial value equations on conformally flat CMC hypersurfaces of the type obtained earlier by Buchman et al. [Phys. Rev. D 80:084024 (2009)].

Tetrad formalism for numerical relativity on conformally compactified constant mean curvature hypersurfaces

We present a new evolution system for Einstein's field equations which is based on tetrad fields and conformally compactified hyperboloidal spatial hypersurfaces which reach future null infinity. The boost freedom in the choice of the tetrad is fixed by requiring that its timelike leg be orthogonal to the foliation, which consists of constant mean curvature slices. The rotational freedom in the tetrad is fixed by the 3D Nester gauge. With these conditions, the field equations reduce naturally to a first-order constrained symmetric hyperbolic evolution system which is coupled to elliptic equations for the gauge variables. The conformally rescaled equations are given explicitly, and their regularity at future null infinity is discussed. Our formulation is potentially useful for high accuracy numerical modeling of gravitational radiation emitted by inspiraling and merging black hole binaries and other highly relativistic isolated systems.
