Bootstrap Bounds on Closed Hyperbolic Manifolds

The eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator and the integrals of products of eigenfunctions must satisfy certain consistency conditions on compact Riemannian manifolds. These consistency conditions are derived by using spectral decompositions to write quadruple overlap integrals in terms of products of triple overlap integrals in multiple ways. In this paper, we show how these consistency conditions imply bounds on the Laplacian eigenvalues and triple overlap integrals of closed hyperbolic manifolds, in analogy to the conformal bootstrap bounds on conformal field theories. We find an upper bound on the gap between two consecutive nonzero eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator in terms of the smaller eigenvalue, an upper bound on the smallest eigenvalue of the rough Laplacian on symmetric, transverse-traceless, rank-2 tensors, and bounds on integrals of products of eigenfunctions and eigentensors. Our strongest bounds involve numerically solving semidefinite programs and are presented as exclusion plots. We also prove the analytic bound $λ_{i+1} \leq 1/2+3 λ_i+\sqrt{λ_i^2+2 λ_i+1/4}$ for consecutive nonzero eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on closed orientable hyperbolic surfaces. We give examples of genus-2 surfaces that nearly saturate some of these bounds. To derive the consistency conditions, we make use of a transverse-traceless decomposition for symmetric tensors of arbitrary rank.

Exceptional scalar theories in de Sitter space

The special galileon and Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) theories are effective field theories of a single scalar field that have many interesting properties in flat space. These theories can be extended to all maximally symmetric spaces, where their algebras of shift symmetries are simple. We study aspects of the curved space versions of these theories: for the special galileon, we find a new compact expression for its Lagrangian in de Sitter space and a field redefinition that relates it to the previous, more complicated formulation. This field redefinition reduces to the well-studied galileon duality redefinition in the flat space limit. For the DBI theory in de Sitter space, we discuss the brane and dilaton formulations of the theory and present strong evidence that these are related by a field redefinition. We also give an interpretation of the symmetries of these theories in terms of broken diffeomorphisms of de Sitter space.

From Amplitudes to Contact Cosmological Correlators

Our understanding of quantum correlators in cosmological spacetimes, including those that we can observe in cosmological surveys, has improved qualitatively in the past few years. Now we know many constraints that these objects must satisfy as consequences of general physical principles, such as symmetries, unitarity and locality. Using this new understanding, we derive the most general scalar four-point correlator, i.e., the trispectrum, to all orders in derivatives for manifestly local contact interactions. To obtain this result we use techniques from commutative algebra to write down all possible scalar four-particle amplitudes without assuming invariance under Lorentz boosts. We then input these amplitudes into a contact reconstruction formula that generates a contact cosmological correlator in de Sitter spacetime from a contact scalar or graviton amplitude. We also show how the same procedure can be used to derive higher-point contact cosmological correlators. Our results further extend the reach of the boostless cosmological bootstrap and build a new connection between flat and curved spacetime physics.

Amplitudes and 4D Gauss-Bonnet Theory

It has recently been argued that there may be a nontrivial four-dimensional limit of the higher-dimensional Gauss--Bonnet and Lovelock interactions and that this might provide a loophole allowing for new four-dimensional gravitational theories, possibly without a standard Lagrangian. We investigate this claim by studying tree-level graviton scattering amplitudes, allowing us to draw conclusions independently of the Lagrangian. By taking four-dimensional limits of higher-dimensional scattering amplitudes of the Gauss--Bonnet theory, we find four-dimensional amplitudes that are different from general relativity; however, these amplitudes are not new since they all come from certain scalar-tensor theories. The nontrivial limit that does not lead to infinite strong coupling around flat space leads to $(\partialϕ)^4$ theory. We argue that there cannot be any six-derivative purely gravitational four-point amplitudes in any dimension other than those coming from Lovelock theory by directly constructing the on-shell amplitudes. In particular, there can be no new such amplitudes in four dimensions beyond those of general relativity. We also present some new results on the spin-averaged cross section for graviton-graviton scattering in general relativity and Gauss--Bonnet theory in arbitrary dimensions.

Unitarization from Geometry

We study the perturbative unitarity of scattering amplitudes in general dimensional reductions of Yang-Mills theories and general relativity on closed internal manifolds. For the tree amplitudes of the dimensionally reduced theory to have the expected high-energy behavior of the higher-dimensional theory, the masses and cubic couplings of the Kaluza-Klein states must satisfy certain sum rules that ensure there are nontrivial cancellations between Feynman diagrams. These sum rules give constraints on the spectra and triple overlap integrals of eigenfunctions of Laplacian operators on the internal manifold and can be proven directly using Hodge and eigenfunction decompositions. One consequence of these constraints is that there is an upper bound on the ratio of consecutive eigenvalues of the scalar Laplacian on closed Ricci-flat manifolds with special holonomy. This gives a sharp bound on the allowed gaps between Kaluza-Klein excitations of the graviton that also applies to Calabi-Yau compactifications of string theory.

Positivity Constraints for Pseudo-linear Massive Spin-2 and Vector Galileons

We derive analyticity constraints on a nonlinear ghost-free effective theory of a massive spin-2 particle known as pseudo-linear massive gravity, and on a generalized theory of a massive spin-1 particle, both of which provide simple IR completions of Galileon theories. For pseudo-linear massive gravity we find that, unlike dRGT massive gravity, there is no window of parameter space which satisfies the analyticity constraints. For massive vectors which reduce to Galileons in the decoupling limit, we find that no two-derivative actions are compatible with positivity, but that higher derivative actions can be made compatible.

On strong coupling scales in (minimal) massive gravity

Ghost-free massive gravity models generically have a strong coupling scale of $Λ_3 =(M_{\rm Pl} m^2)^{1/3}$. However, for one of these models - `minimal massive gravity' - it is not clear what this scale is in the subset of solutions with vanishing vector modes, since there are then no interactions at the scale $Λ_3$. We show that there are always scalar-tensor interactions at a scale arbitrarily close to $Λ_3$ around the Minkowski vacuum solution. This explicitly confirms and completes previous research establishing that $Λ_3$ effectively is the maximal strong coupling scale for all ghost-free (dRGT) massive gravity models (on Minkowski). In the process, we also revisit and clarify the construction of generic Lorentz-invariant massive gravity models, explicitly constructing an improved non-redundant expansion for these models.
