An invitation to the promise constraint satisfaction problem

The study of the complexity of the constraint satisfaction problem (CSP), centred around the Feder-Vardi Dichotomy Conjecture, has been very prominent in the last two decades. After a long concerted effort and many partial results, the Dichotomy Conjecture has been proved in 2017 independently by Bulatov and Zhuk. At about the same time, a vast generalisation of CSP, called promise CSP, has started to gain prominence. In this survey, we explain the importance of promise CSP and highlight many new very interesting features that the study of promise CSP has brought to light. The complexity classification quest for the promise CSP is wide open, and we argue that, despite the promise CSP being more general, this quest is rather more accessible to a wide range of researchers than the dichotomy-led study of the CSP has been.

ω-categorical structures avoiding height 1 identities

The algebraic dichotomy conjecture for Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs) of reducts of (infinite) finitely bounded homogeneous structures states that such CSPs are polynomial-time tractable if the model-complete core of the template has a pseudo-Siggers polymorphism, and NP-complete otherwise. One of the important questions related to the dichotomy conjecture is whether, similarly to the case of finite structures, the condition of having a pseudo-Siggers polymorphism can be replaced by the condition of having polymorphisms satisfying a fixed set of identities of height 1, i.e., identities which do not contain any nesting of functional symbols. We provide a negative answer to this question by constructing for each non-trivial set of height 1 identities a structure within the range of the conjecture whose polymorphisms do not satisfy these identities, but whose CSP is tractable nevertheless. An equivalent formulation of the dichotomy conjecture characterizes tractability of the CSP via the local satisfaction of non-trivial height 1 identities by polymorphisms of the structure. We show that local satisfaction and global satisfaction of non-trivial height 1 identities differ for ωω-categorical structures with less than doubly exponential orbit growth, thereby resolving one of the main open problems in the algebraic theory of such structures.

The complexity of 3-colouring HH-colourable graphs

We study the complexity of approximation on satisfiable instances for graph homomorphism problems. For a fixed graph HH, the HH-colouring problem is to decide whether a given graph has a homomorphism to HH. By a result of Hell and Nešetřil, this problem is NP-hard for any non-bipartite graph HH. In the context of promise constraint satisfaction problems, Brakensiek and Guruswami conjectured that this hardness result extends to promise graph homomorphism as follows: fix any non-bipartite graph HH and another graph GG with a homomorphism from HH to GG, it is NP-hard to find a homomorphism to GG from a given HH-colourable graph. Arguably, the two most important special cases of this conjecture are when HH is fixed to be the complete graph on 3 vertices (and GG is any graph with a triangle) and when GG is the complete graph on 3 vertices (and HH is any 3-colourable graph). The former case is equivalent to the notoriously difficult approximate graph colouring problem. In this paper, we confirm the Brakensiek-Guruswami conjecture for the latter case. Our proofs rely on a novel combination of the universal-algebraic approach to promise constraint satisfaction, that was recently developed by Barto, Bulín and the authors, with some ideas from algebraic topology.

Topology is relevant (in a dichotomy conjecture for infinite-domain constraint satisfaction problems)

The algebraic dichotomy conjecture for Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs) of reducts of (infinite) finitely bounded homogeneous structures states that such CSPs are polynomial-time tractable when the model-complete core of the template has a pseudo-Siggers polymorphism, and NP-complete otherwise.
