A view of the peakon world through the lens of approximation theory

Peakons (peaked solitons) are particular solutions admitted by certain nonlinear PDEs, most famously the Camassa-Holm shallow water wave equation. These solutions take the form of a train of peak-shaped waves, interacting in a particle-like fashion. In this article we give an overview of the mathematics of peakons, with particular emphasis on the connections to classical problems in analysis, such as Padé approximation, mixed Hermite-Padé approximation, multi-point Padé approximation, continued fractions of Stieltjes type and (bi)orthogonal polynomials. The exposition follows the chronological development of our understanding, exploring the peakon solutions of the Camassa-Holm, Degasperis-Procesi, Novikov, Geng-Xue and modified Camassa-Holm (FORQ) equations. All of these paradigm examples are integrable systems arising from the compatibility condition of a Lax pair, and a recurring theme in the context of peakons is the need to properly interpret these Lax pairs in the sense of Schwartz's theory of distributions. We trace out the path leading from distributional Lax pairs to explicit formulas for peakon solutions via a variety of approximation-theoretic problems, and we illustrate the peakon dynamics with graphics.

The Calogero-Françoise integrable system: algebraic geometry, Higgs fields, and the inverse problem

We review the Calogero-Françoise integrable system, which is a generalization of the Camassa-Holm system. We express solutions as (twisted) Higgs bundles, in the sense of Hitchin, over the projective line. We use this point of view to (a) establish a general answer to the question of linearization of isospectral flow and (b) demonstrate, in the case of two particles, the dynamical meaning of the theta divisor of the spectral curve in terms of mechanical collisions. Lastly, we outline the solution to the inverse problem for CF flows using Stieltjes' continued fractions.

Multipeakons of a two-component modified Camassa-Holm equation and the relation with the finite Kac-van Moerbeke lattice

A spectral and the inverse spectral problem are studied for the two-component modified Camassa-Holm type for measures associated to interlacing peaks. It is shown that the spectral problem is equivalent to an inhomogenous string problem with Dirichlet/Neumann boundary conditions. The inverse problem is solved by Stieltjes' continued fraction expansion, leading to an explicit construction of peakon solutions. Sufficient conditions for the global existence in $t$ are given. The large time asymptotics reveals that, asymptotically, peakons pair up to form bound states moving with constant speeds. The peakon flow is shown to project to one of the isospectral flows of the finite Kac--van Moerbeke lattice.

On isospectral deformations of an inhomogeneous string

In this paper we consider a class of isospectral deformations of the inhomogeneous string boundary value problem. The deformations considered are generalizations of the isospectral deformation that has arisen in connection with the Camassa-Holm equation for the shallow water waves. It is proved that these new isospectral deformations result in evolution equations on the mass density whose form depends on how the string is tied at the endpoints. Moreover, it is shown that the evolution equations in this class linearize on the spectral side and hence can be solved by the inverse spectral method. In particular, the problem involving a mass density given by a discrete finite measure and arbitrary boundary conditions is shown to be solvable by Stieltjes' continued fractions.

Peakon-antipeakon interactions in the Degasperis-Procesi Equation

Peakons are singular, soliton-like solutions to nonlinear wave equations whose dynamics can be studied using ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The Degasperis-Procesi equation (DP) is an important example of an integrable PDE exhibiting wave breaking in the peakon sector thus affording an interpretation of wave breaking as a mechanical collision of particles. In this paper we set up a general formalism in which to study collisions of DP peakons and apply it, as an illustration, to a detailed study of three colliding peakons. It is shown that peakons can collide only in pairs, no triple collisions are allowed and at the collision a shockpeakon is created. We also show that the initial configuration of peakon-antipeakon pairs is nontrivially correlated with the spectral properties of an accompanying non-selfadjoint boundary value problem. In particular if peakons or antipeakons are bunched up on one side relative to a remaining antipeakon or peakon then the spectrum is real and simple. Even though the spectrum is in general complex the existence of a global solution in either time direction dynamics is shown to imply the reality of the spectrum of the boundary value problem.

Shock creation and Painlevé property of colliding peakons in the Degasperis-Procesi Equation

The Degasperis-Procesi equation (DP) is one of several equations known to model important nonlinear effects such as wave breaking and shock creation. It is, however, a special property of the DP equation that these two effects can be studied in an explicit way with the help of the multipeakon ansatz. In essence this ansatz allows one to model wave breaking as a collision of hypothetical particles (peakons and antipeakons), called henceforth collectively multipeakons. It is shown that DP multipeakons have Painlevé property which implies a universal wave breaking behaviour, that multipeakons can collide only in pairs, and that there are no multiple collisions other than, possibly simultaneous, collisions of peakon-antipeakon pairs at different locations. Moreover, it is demonstrated that each peakon-antipeakon collision results in creation of a shock thus making possible a multi shock phenomenon.

The Canada Day Theorem

The Canada Day Theorem is an identity involving sums of $k \times k$ minors of an arbitrary $n \times n$ symmetric matrix. It was discovered as a by-product of the work on so-called peakon solutions of an integrable nonlinear partial differential equation proposed by V. Novikov. Here we present another proof of this theorem, which explains the underlying mechanism in terms of the orbits of a certain abelian group action on the set of all $k$-edge matchings of the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$.

Strong asymptotics for Cauchy biorthogonal polynomials with application to the Cauchy two--matrix model

We apply the nonlinear steepest descent method to a class of 3x3 Riemann-Hilbert problems introduced in connection with the Cauchy two-matrix random model. The general case of two equilibrium measures supported on an arbitrary number of intervals is considered. In this case, we solve the Riemann-Hilbert problem for the outer parametrix in terms of sections of a spinorial line bundle on a three-sheeted Riemann surface of arbitrary genus and establish strong asymptotic results for the Cauchy biorthogonal polynomials.

Inverse problems associated with integrable equations of Camassa-Holm type; explicit formulas on the real axis, I

The inverse problem which arises in the Camassa--Holm equation is revisited for the class of discrete densities. The method of solution relies on the use of orthogonal polynomials. The explicit formulas are obtained directly from the analysis on the real axis without any additional transformation to a "string" type boundary value problem known from prior works.

Explicit multipeakon solutions of Novikov's cubically nonlinear integrable Camassa-Holm type equation

Recently Vladimir Novikov found a new integrable analogue of the Camassa-Holm equation, admitting peaked soliton (peakon) solutions, which has nonlinear terms that are cubic, rather than quadratic. In this paper, the explicit formulas for multipeakon solutions of Novikov's cubically nonlinear equation are calculated, using the matrix Lax pair found by Hone and Wang. By a transformation of Liouville type, the associated spectral problem is related to a cubic string equation, which is dual to the cubic string that was previously found in the work of Lundmark and Szmigielski on the multipeakons of the Degasperis-Procesi equation.
