Parabolic model with phase-jump coupling

We study the coherent dynamics of a two-level parabolic model and ways to enhance population transfer and even to obtain complete population inversion in such models. Motivated by the complete population inversion effect of zero-area pulses found in [1], we consider a scheme where a given coupling function is transformed to a zero-area coupling by performing phase-jump in the middle of the evolution. We also derive a universal formula for the effect of the phase-jump.

Geometry of adiabatic Hamiltonians for two-level quantum systems

We present the formulation of the problem of the coherent dynamics of quantum mechanical two-level systems in the adiabatic region in terms of the differential geometry of plane curves. We show that there is a natural plane curve corresponding to the Hamiltonian of the system for which the geometrical quantities have a simple physical interpretation. In particular, the curvature of the curve has the role of the nonadiabatic coupling.

Time-dependent two-level models and zero-area pulses

Time-dependent two-level models have been an important element in physics, and in particular in quantum optics since 1930's. We review the basics of these models and focus on the dynamics induced by off-resonant zero-area pulses by using a Sech-Tanh pulse model as an example. We show that the final transition probability for this model is described accurately by the Dykhne-Davis-Pechukas approach for certain parameter regions. Finally, we note the potential of such zero area pulse models in quantum control and quantum information.

Zhu-Nakamura theory and the superparabolic level-glancing models

We study the applicability of the Zhu-Nakamura theory to a class of time-dependent quantum mechanical level-crossing models called superparabolic level-glancing models. The phenomenon of a level glancing, being on the borderline between a proper crossing of energy levels and an avoided crossing, is also an important special case between the two different approximative expressions in the Zhu-Nakamura theory. It is seen that the application of the theory to these models is not straightforward. We discuss some possible causes of these difficulties and also compare the approximative formulas of Zhu-Nakamura theory to those obtained by the generalization of the DDP theory.
